Eltra EL 63 Compact Hollow Shaft Incremental Encoder, 35 mm Height

Description

A six-variant hollow shaft encoder only 35 mm high for small AC motors

The EL 63 series is built for small AC motors where there is little axial room. The datasheet puts the height at only 35 mm and describes a three channel (A / B / Z) encoder with resolutions from 1 to 2500 pulses per revolution, a supply of up to 30 V DC and an output frequency of up to 300 kHz. Bore diameters of 8, 10, 12, 14 and 15 mm are available, and the shaft is fixed by collar clamping.

One datasheet covers six mechanical variants: 63FB and 63GB are blind hollow shaft, 63PB and 63PBF are through hollow shaft, and 63PC and 63PCF are rear fixing. The letters differ in how torque is reacted. The models with a G, P or PC ending include a torque pin, while FB, PBF and PCF use a torque stop slot and need the pin or bracket from the Accessories list. This gives one encoder family that can follow whichever mounting arrangement the motor already has.

Choosing the EL 63 variant and reading the code

The datasheet example is EL 63GB 500 S 5/28 P 8 X 3 PR . XXX. Pick the model first, because it fixes how the encoder is held and how torque is reacted.

Code position Options
63FB Blind hollow shaft with torque stop slot; pin ordered separately
63GB Blind hollow shaft with torque pin included
63PB Through hollow shaft with torque pin included
63PBF Through hollow shaft with torque stop slot
63PC / 63PCF Rear fixing shaft with torque pin / with torque stop slot
Resolution and zero pulse 1 to 2500 ppr; S without, Z with zero pulse
Bore, enclosure, speed 8, 10, 12, 14 or 15 mm; X = IP 54; 3 = 3600 rpm
Output type PR radial cable, 1.5 m standard; 2, 3, 5 or 10 m optional

Installation and operating notes

The datasheet recommends a g6 mating shaft tolerance and shows a recommended interface flange design for the rear-fixing 63PC. Follow it so the encoder body is located correctly on the motor end shield.

Where a torque pin is not supplied (FB, PBF, PCF), obtain it from the accessory list before installation. Tighten the collar clamp only after the encoder is seated, so that the torque arm is not preloaded.

The resolution table is long, with listed counts from 1, 2, 5 and 20 up to 2048 and 2500. Eltra marks preferred resolutions in bold in the original, which are the best stocked choices; other counts must be requested directly.

Applications for the EL 63

Small AC motors, gearmotors, textile and packaging machines and fan drives are the typical hosts, since the 35 mm height fits behind a fan cover or inside a compact motor housing. A resolution of 1 ppr and low counts are also useful for simple rotation and stall detection.

With IP 54 and a 3600 rpm rating the series is for indoor, clean and dry locations. For dusty, hot or wash-down locations choose a higher IP series from the catalogue. This is general selection guidance.

Commissioning and maintenance notes

Before installation, check that the bore matches the motor shaft and that the anti-rotation fixing does not load the bearings. Avoid hammering the encoder onto the shaft. Match the output type and supply voltage with the drive or counter input, and use shielded cable with the shield earthed as described in the manual. In hot plant rooms in the region, check the operating temperature against the real conditions near the motor, and inspect the cable and connector during routine maintenance.

When ordering a replacement, record the resolution, output type and bore of the existing encoder, so the new unit fits without changes to the drive settings.
