ABB FEN-11 Absolute Encoder Interface Module
Description
What the FEN-11 connects
The FEN-11 is ABB’s Absolute Encoder Interface, an option module that plugs into the option slot of a compatible ABB drive and carries encoder feedback to the control unit. It offers an interface for an absolute encoder with PTC, Pt1000 or KTY thermistor support, a TTL encoder input, a TTL encoder emulation output and two digital inputs for position latching. ABB’s user’s manual 3AFE68784841 Rev E (effective 2024-08-14) refers to the drive’s ordering information and hardware manual for the question of which drives can take the module.

Encoder types the FEN-11 accepts
The absolute encoder side takes sin/cos incremental encoders of 1 to 65535 periods per revolution with reference mark and commutation signals, EnDat 2.1 and 2.2 with or without sin/cos signals, HIPERFACE, SSI with or without sin/cos signals, and Tamagawa 17-bit and 33-bit Smart Abs and 17-bit Smart Inc encoders. The TTL input handles incremental encoders of 1 to 65535 periods per revolution with a zero pulse. Speed range is -32768 to 32767 rpm with 0.004 rpm resolution (24 bits), and position resolution is 16.8 million steps per revolution on the absolute inputs.
Connectors, supply and cable limits
The TTL input X41 supplies +5.5 V at 180 mA and +24 V at 150 mA with a combined limit of 3.6 W, with RS-422/485 signals up to 500 kHz and cable lengths of 30 m for a 5 V encoder (60 m with two parallel 0.5 mm2 supply cables) or 100 m for a 10 to 30 V TTL encoder. The absolute input X42 supplies +5.5 V at 250 mA or +8 V at 130 mA, accepts 1 Vp-p sin/cos at up to 500 kHz and allows 25 m of cable, 50 m with two parallel supply cables and 75 m with an external encoder supply. The emulation output X43 and latch inputs X44 complete the module; the manual drawing shows an outline of 106 mm by 63 mm.

Source document and RFQ
The data on this page was read from ABB’s user’s manual for the FEN-11, linked here, and from ABB’s product page for the module. To request the FEN-11, send Seven Star LLC the drive model, quantity and delivery site, and availability is given in the quotation. Confirm before ordering that the drive, control unit and firmware support this module, and note that older manuals may predate current drive generations. Other encoder interfaces and options are listed in Encoders, and the FPBA-01 fieldbus adapter page shows another option module. When choosing between encoder modules, match the module to the sensor on the motor name plate, for example EnDat or HIPERFACE for absolute feedback, and keep the encoder cable shielded and separate from motor cables to protect the 500 kHz signals.

About brand
ABB is the Swiss-Swedish engineering group for electrification and automation: low voltage drives, motors, circuit breakers and motor control, process instruments and analysers, control systems and robots. It was formed on 5 January 1988 by the merger of two older companies. ASEA was founded in Västerås, Sweden, in 1883 by Ludvig Fredholm to make electric lighting and generators. BBC Brown Boveri was founded in Baden near Zurich in 1891 by Charles E. L. Brown and Walter Boveri. ABB Ltd is incorporated in Switzerland, headquartered in Zurich and listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange and Nasdaq Stockholm.

Choosing an ABB drive
ABB's ACS drive codes are easy to read once you know the pattern. In ACS580-01-046A-4, "ACS580" is the drive family, "01" means a wall-mounted single drive, "046A" is the rated output current (about 46 A) and "-4" means a 380–480 V supply. The family is chosen by application: ACS355 for compact machinery, ACS310 for simple pumps and fans, ACS580 as the general-purpose drive, ACQ580 for water and wastewater with pump functions such as pipe fill and dry-run protection, and ACS880 for heavy industrial duty with direct torque control. Size the drive on the motor's full-load current, not only its kW rating, and allow derating for the high ambient temperatures common in Gulf electrical rooms.
Where ABB products are used
In Oman and the GCC, ABB drives and motors run pumps, fans and compressors in water and wastewater plants, district cooling, oil and gas and industry. ABB flowmeters, level instruments and analysers are used in water utilities, power and desalination plants and refineries, and SACE breakers protect switchboards in buildings and plants.

Ordering ABB products: what we need
Send the full type code from the nameplate (for example ACS580-01-046A-4 or 266DSH...) and, for spare parts, the ABB ID number (such as 3BSE008508R1 or 1SBL176001R3010). For drives, add the motor power and current and any option codes (+...). For instruments, send the complete order code, which sets range, materials and approvals. Baldor motors are listed on their own brand page.
Facts checked against ABB company filings and published histories of ASEA and Brown, Boveri & Cie, October 2026.
