Brand:

Eltra EX 80 A/D ATEX Explosion-Proof Incremental Encoder

Description

A flameproof incremental encoder with 10 mm solid shaft for gas and dust atmospheres

The EX 80 is Eltra’s explosion proof incremental encoder for plants where rotary feedback has to be installed inside a hazardous area. The datasheet describes a three channel (A / B / Z) device with resolutions from 100 to 10000 pulses per revolution, a supply of up to 30 V DC, an output frequency of up to 500 kHz and a 10 mm solid shaft. It is offered as the EX 80A with a synchronous flange and the EX 80D with a centering square flange, both of 40 mm diameter.

The housing is the point of the product. Eltra states that an EC-type examination certificate, CESI 04 ATEX 082, assures compliance with the essential health and safety requirements of EN IEC 60079-0:2018, EN 60079-1:2014 and EN 60079-31:2014. The printed marking is II 2GD, Ex db IIC T6 Gb and Ex tb IIIC T85°C Db, covering gas and combustible dust. In a GCC refinery, gas plant or tank-farm pump house, this is the family of device that replaces a standard encoder when a zone drawing forbids one.

Installation and operating notes

Eltra recommends an H7 mating shaft tolerance. Fixing clamps for the synchronous flange are not included and are listed under Accessories. Observe the 200 N static shaft load limit.

Cable colours differ by output circuit. For the C / P versions the datasheet shows brown +V DC, grey 0 V, green A+, yellow B+ and white Z+. For the L / RS versions it adds red A-, pink B- and white Z-, and Z+ becomes blue. Check the connection table in the datasheet against your cable before wiring.

The hazardous-area classification belongs to the certified housing, so keep the cable entry, cover and flange as supplied and check the nameplate marking against the zone and temperature class on your area drawing.

Where the EX 80 fits in GCC hazardous areas

Typical positions are speed and position feedback on motors, pumps, compressors, mixers and conveyors located in classified areas of oil and gas, petrochemical, fertilizer and grain-handling sites. The Ex tb dust marking also covers the mill-and-silo type of location, where combustible dust is the hazard.

The operating range is -20 to +50°C at the flange, so check summer ambient temperature and heat from the driven machine before specifying it (general remark).
