Eltra AAM 36 B CANopen Magnetic Multiturn Absolute Encoder
Description
A 38-bit magnetic multiturn absolute encoder with CANopen interface and 6 mm shaft
The AAM 36 B CANopen is a solid shaft magnetic multiturn absolute encoder for factory automation. Instead of optical sensing it uses non-contact magnetic sensing with a magnetic ASIC and energy harvesting, which removes the battery or gear stage from the multiturn count. Resolution is programmable up to 24 bit multiturn and 14 bit singleturn, which is a combined 38 bits.
The CANopen interface follows communication profile CiA 301 and encoder profile CiA 406 V3.2 class C2, with node numbers from 1 to 127, baud rates from 10 kBaud to 1 Mbaud with automatic detection, and synchronous and asynchronous transmission modes. The 33 mm synchronous flange body is made of chromium plated steel, with separated chambers for a sturdy construction, a 6 mm shaft and either a 2 m axial cable or an axial M12 connector.
Principal characteristics
- Non-contact magnetic sensing with magnetic ASIC and energy harvesting
- Sturdy construction with separated chambers
- Power supply up to 32 V DC with CANopen interface
- Cable or M12 axial connector output

Installation and operating notes
Mount through the synchronous flange with an H7 mating shaft. Respect the static load limits of 80 N radial and 50 N axial and use a flexible coupling to avoid transmitting misalignment to the bearings.
Commission the node number, baud rate and resolution through the CANopen object dictionary or the LSS service. A typical CAN bus needs termination at both ends, which the datasheet does not describe, so follow the network designer’s rules (general guidance).
Cable colours and the 5 pin M12 A-coded layout are in the datasheet; with the cable version, allow an extra 7 mm in the length shown on the drawing.
Applications for the AAM 36 B CANopen
CANopen is common on mobile machinery, material handling, packaging, test benches and valve or damper positioning. The magnetic sensing and the 12000 rpm limit also suit fast spindles and small axes where a compact 36 mm body is needed.
The 110 g body and IP 67 cover make it a candidate for outdoor positioning in dusty GCC sites, although the shaft side is IP 65 and the datasheet states no salt-spray test. This is general guidance.

Commissioning and maintenance notes
Magnetic multiturn absolute encoders without batteries are useful in the region on machines and automation lines where battery replacement would add maintenance work, and where the position must be kept after power loss. Before commissioning, set the CANopen node ID and baud rate to match the network, check that the bus is terminated at both ends, and load the EDS file into the controller as described in the manual.
Use a flexible coupling between the encoder shaft and the machine shaft, so misalignment does not load the encoder bearings. Use shielded bus cable with the shield earthed as described in the manual, and keep it away from motor power cables. In hot plant rooms or outdoor machines, check the operating temperature against the real conditions, and inspect the connector and cable during routine maintenance.
When ordering a replacement, record the resolution, the CANopen settings and the shaft and flange type of the existing encoder, so the new unit can be configured the same way. Keeping one spare encoder for critical machines shortens downtime after a failure.
