High-power pulsed MIG/MAG with four Böhler processes

The Böhler Welding TERRA NX 500 PME is a three-phase inverter machine for MIG/MAG and pulsed MIG/MAG welding. Böhler Welding highlights a 3.5 in colour graphic LCD user panel, four proprietary welding processes (ArcDrive, RapiDeep, PulsDrive and QuickPulse) and up to 600 Böhler Arc welding programs. The adjustment range is 3 to 500 A, which places it at the upper end of the TERRA NX family for heavy plate, thick-wall pipe and high deposition work.

The wire feeder is a separate unit chosen from three SteelDrive models, which lets the machine be set up for workshop use on a trolley or, with the larger feeders, for longer hose packages.

Matching feeder, torch and trolley

The feeder table in the data sheet is the key selection step. The WF NX 230 SteelDrive is the lightest at 8.8 kg and takes 200 mm spools on two drive rolls. The WF NX 330 and WF NX 430 have four rolls and accept 200 or 300 mm spools; the 430 is listed with a 4 to 8 m cable length, against 3 to 4 m for the other two. Torch ratings in the sheet at 100 % duty are 450 A for the MT 440 W, 550 A for the MT 540 W and 450 A for the MB 501 DGMIG, all on Ar/CO2 and wire from 0.8 to 1.6 mm.

The trolley variants with the WF suffix carry the wire feeder on the machine; check which suits your layout.

Installation and supply

At 29.7 kVA maximum input power and a 40 A slow blow fuse, the machine needs a three-phase 400 V supply. A 4 x 6 mm2 supply cable of 5 m is listed. Because the high-current duty cycles are specified at both 40 and 25 degrees C, the operating environment matters on hot sites; plan ventilation and the liquid cooling circuit accordingly.
