Description
Cuttable-probe level sensor with analog and four switching outputs
The Turck LS-551-0700-LIU24PN8X-H1181 is a liquid level sensor from the LS-5 series with a 700 mm probe. Turck says the series uses time-of-flight measurement of electromagnetic waves, so no moving parts are involved, and that the sensor is resistant to deposit formation and can be commissioned without calibration.
One sensor gives both continuous level monitoring and point level switching: an analog output of 4 to 20 mA or 0 to 10 V, a PNP output or IO-Link, and three further PNP/NPN switching outputs. The probe can be cut to length to fit a vessel, which keeps the number of variants small.

Turck also quotes the process limits in US units, a temperature to 212 degrees F and pressure to 145 psi. The data sheet lists a PBT housing, aramid-fibre sealing bound with NBR, a temperature drift of 0.1 or less, short-circuit and reverse polarity protection, an inductive load limit below 1 H and a capacitive load limit of 100 nF, with insulation class III.
Where the sensor fits
Turck lists coaxial tubes as an accessory for non-metallic tanks and for low dielectric media, which extends the application range where the dielectric constant is as low as 1.8. The small inactive areas make the probe suitable for small containers.
The compact display housing is rotatable and the sensor is set up with four buttons and the integrated display or through IO-Link. Typical uses are lubricant, coolant, condensate and chemical tanks on skids and packaged equipment.
Selecting and installing the sensor
Check the dielectric constant of the liquid and the process temperature and pressure against the limits of minus 20 to plus 100 degrees C and minus 1 to 10 bar. Allow for the 25 mm inactive area at the connection when setting the high level switch point.
Keep the probe clear of vessel internals and respect the 6 Nm loading limit when tightening the G3/4 thread. This is a general industrial sensor with a UL listing and is not marked for hazardous areas.
