KROHNE OPTIWAVE 5400 24 GHz Radar Level Transmitter

Description

Overview of the KROHNE OPTIWAVE 5400

The KROHNE OPTIWAVE 5400 is a two-wire, loop-powered non-contact radar level transmitter for liquids, pastes and slurries. Working in the 24–26 GHz K-band with FMCW technology, it is designed by KROHNE for liquids in basic process applications: storage, process and batch tanks up to 100 m high, as well as open-air measurements on dams and rivers. With ±2 mm accuracy, HART 7 and SIL 2/3 certification, it offers a dependable measurement without contact with the product and without moving parts.

Seven Star LLC supplies the KROHNE OPTIWAVE 5400 to utilities, oil and gas operators and process plants across the Sultanate of Oman and the GCC. As a trusted supplier with engineering support in Muscat, we size the antenna to the nozzle and tank height, confirm the flange standard and Ex approval, and provide the KROHNE handbook with each offer.

Measuring Principle

The KROHNE OPTIWAVE 5400 emits a high-frequency signal whose frequency increases linearly during each measurement phase, known as the frequency sweep. The signal is reflected by the product surface and received after a delay that equals twice the distance divided by the speed of light. Because the frequency has moved on in the meantime, the difference between the transmitted and received frequency is directly proportional to distance. The converter transforms this difference into a spectrum with a Fast Fourier Transform and calculates level as tank height minus measured distance; volume and mass are available as secondary values.

For liquids with a dielectric constant of 1.4 or higher the device measures in direct mode. When the dielectric constant is lower, the TBF Auto and Full TBF modes evaluate the reflection from a flat tank bottom or a reference plate, so even light hydrocarbons can be measured. Tank Bottom Management algorithms filter irregular reflections from an empty vessel, and an empty-tank spectrum function suppresses false echoes from internals. Being non-contact, the KROHNE OPTIWAVE 5400 is not affected by product density or conductivity and has no wetted moving parts to maintain.

Engineering Design of the KROHNE OPTIWAVE 5400

The signal converter sits in a polyester-coated aluminium housing, with 316L stainless steel as an option, rated IP66/IP68 and NEMA 4X/6. A backlit 128 × 64 pixel LCD with a four-button keypad can be operated with a bar magnet, so settings can be changed without opening the cover in a hazardous area. The wiring uses an M20 × 1.5 entry as standard, with ½ NPT or a four-pin M12 connector as alternatives, and the device is supplied from 12 to 30 V DC in non-Ex and Ex i versions.

Two antenna families are available. The 316L Metallic Horn antenna comes in sizes from DN40 to DN200 with an optional purging connection for sticky media, while the PP Drop antenna has an ellipsoidal, smooth surface that resists condensation and build-up and achieves a 5° beam angle at DN150. Antenna extensions adapt the instrument to long nozzles, and a DN65 horn version is designed for mounting on the KROHNE BM 26 A magnetic level indicator. Process connections include G and NPT threads and EN 1092-1, ASME B16.5 and JIS flanges.

About brand
Flow measurement is where KROHNE built its name, from variable area meters to custody transfer ultrasonic systems, with level instruments alongside. Founded in 1921 and based in Duisburg, Germany, the company designs meters for liquids, gases and steam. Seven Star LLC lists KROHNE flowmeters, radar and guided radar level transmitters and the SUMMIT 8800 flow computer, and sources them for plants and pipelines in Oman and neighboring markets.

KROHNE product families on this page

KROHNE names its instruments by measuring principle, which makes a tag list easy to read:
  • OPTIFLUX and WATERFLUX: electromagnetic flowmeters, such as OPTIFLUX 2300, OPTIFLUX 4300 and WATERFLUX 3070 for water networks
  • OPTISONIC and ALTOSONIC: ultrasonic flowmeters, including the inline OPTISONIC 3400, the clamp-on OPTISONIC 6300, the OPTISONIC 7300 for gas and the ALTOSONIC V12 for custody transfer of gas
  • OPTIMASS: Coriolis mass flowmeters such as OPTIMASS 1400 and 6400
  • H250 M40 and DK800: variable area flowmeters
  • OPTIWAVE and OPTIFLEX: radar and guided radar level transmitters
In most families the four-digit name combines a flow sensor with a signal converter. An OPTIFLUX 4300, for example, is an OPTIFLUX 4000 sensor with an IFC 300 converter, so a spare converter and a complete meter are different order items.

Where KROHNE flowmeters and level transmitters are used

Typical duties in the GCC are produced water and injection water metering, potable water and wastewater networks, fuel gas and sales gas measurement, chemical dosing, and tank level in terminals and process units. Coriolis meters cover mass flow and density on hydrocarbons, while electromagnetic meters need a conductive liquid.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of radar does the KROHNE OPTIWAVE 5400 use?
It is a two-wire, loop-powered FMCW (frequency modulated continuous wave) radar operating in the K-band from 24 to 26 GHz. The frequency difference between the transmitted and the received signal is processed by a Fast Fourier Transform to calculate the distance to the liquid surface.
What measuring range and accuracy does the OPTIWAVE 5400 offer?
The maximum range depends on the antenna: 15 m with a DN40 horn, 50 m with DN80 antennas, 80 m with DN100 antennas and 100 m with DN150 or DN200 antennas. Accuracy is ±2 mm up to 10 m and ±0.02 % of the measured distance beyond 10 m, with ±1 mm repeatability.
Which antennas and process conditions are supported?
Customers can choose a 316L stainless steel Metallic Horn antenna, rated from −50 to +130 °C, or a PP Drop antenna for −40 to +100 °C that resists condensation and scaling. Both are rated for process pressures from −1 to 16 barg, subject to the selected process connection.
Can the OPTIWAVE 5400 measure liquids with a low dielectric constant?
Yes. Direct mode is used for liquids with a dielectric constant of 1.4 or higher. For lower values the device can use Tank Bottom Following, which evaluates the reflection from a flat tank bottom or a reference plate in a stilling well and works down to a dielectric constant of 1.1.
