Selectarc Inox 317L E317L-17 Stainless Steel Electrode

Description

Higher-molybdenum rutile electrode for improved pitting resistance

The Selectarc Inox 317L is a low-carbon, rutile coated austenitic stainless steel electrode depositing about 19% chromium, 13% nickel and 3.5% molybdenum, with roughly 8% ferrite. It is classified AWS A5.4 E317L-17 and ISO 3581-A / EN 1600 E Z 19 13 4 L R 3 2.

Selectarc states that the coating has very low moisture pick-up and that the electrode gives soft fusion without spatter, very easy slag removal, an exceptional bead appearance and easy restriking. The extra molybdenum compared with a standard 316L deposit gives improved resistance to pitting corrosion, which the manufacturer highlights against its own Inox 316L grade.

Base metals and where 317L filler fits

The data sheet names UNS S31603 (316L, 1.4404), S31653 (316LN, 1.4429), S31700 (317, 1.4449), the 18-14-3 grade 1.4435 and S31703 (317L, 1.4438). Selectarc also mentions stabilised stainless steels and hardfacing of stainless components among the uses.

Many fabricators use a 317L filler on 316L piping and vessels on purpose: molybdenum segregates during solidification, so the as-welded deposit has local zones that are leaner than the nominal analysis. Over-alloying the filler compensates for this and keeps the weld’s pitting resistance closer to the parent metal. This approach is common for chemical process lines, pulp and paper equipment, desalination components and storage tanks handling mildly chloride-bearing liquids. For more severe chloride exposure, duplex or 6Mo superaustenitic systems with nickel-base fillers are the next step.

Welding recommendations

Inox 317L can be used on DC electrode positive or on AC with about 70 V open circuit voltage. Redry the electrodes for 1 hour at 250 °C if they have absorbed moisture, and keep the interpass temperature below 200 °C to limit distortion and preserve corrosion resistance in the heat-affected zone.

Four diameters from 2.0 to 4.0 mm cover sheet, pipe and plate. Use the smaller sizes for root and positional work on thin wall, and the 3.2 or 4.0 mm sizes for fill passes in flat position. After welding, pickling and passivation restore the chromium oxide layer and remove heat tint, which matters as much for corrosion performance as the filler choice itself. Keep stainless work separate from carbon steel to avoid iron contamination of the surface.

About brand

Selectarc is a French manufacturer of welding and brazing filler metals, headquartered in Grandvillars, France. Its welding activity began in 1952 with Selectarc Industrie, a plant making covered electrodes, and the business is the welding and brazing division of the family group Viellard Migeon & Compagnie. In 2025 Framatome took a 40% stake in the company.

Selectarc welding and brazing products

The welding range covers covered electrodes for carbon, low-alloy, stainless and nickel-base steels, MIG and TIG wires, flux-cored wires and hardfacing products, with brazing alloys made at the former Reboud-Roche foundry. Selectarc lists the nuclear, defence and aerospace industries among its key markets, and welding production is concentrated at its Grandvillars site, which also houses the research laboratory.

Ordering Selectarc filler metals: what we need

Give the product name, for example Selectarc Ni625, and the AWS or ISO classification in your procedure, the diameter and length, and the quantity. Seven Star LLC, an independent supplier in Muscat, checks the grade against the Selectarc technical data sheet and can provide the data sheet and the certificates issued with the order on request.
