AUMA FQM 05.1 Fail-Safe Unit for SQ 05.2 Actuators
Description
Overview
AUMA FQM 05.1 is the smallest fail-safe unit of the FQM .1 range. It is mounted between a part-turn actuator and the valve and drives the valve to a defined safe position when an emergency shut-down signal or a power failure occurs. The FQM 05.1 is paired with the SQ 05.2 actuator and guarantees a minimum torque of 150 Nm for the fail-safe movement, which matches the top of the SQ 05.2 tripping range.
In Oman and the GCC, Seven Star LLC proudly supplies the AUMA FQM 05.1 to process, power and water customers in Oman and the GCC. For small emergency shut-down valves in Sohar, Salalah and Muscat, we help engineers confirm that the spring unit, the SQ 05.2 actuator and the controls form a coherent safety function.
How the Fail-Safe Movement Works
During normal operation the SQ 05.2 drives the valve through the unit, and the energy store stays charged. When the ESD input, a 24 V DC signal drawing about 1 A, changes state, or when the mains supply fails, the unit releases its stored energy and moves the valve to the preset position. The AUMA FQM 05.1 lets the fail-safe time be set at the factory between 9 s and 34 s for a 90 degree stroke, and AUMA notes that the operating time increases with the torque the valve requires.
The unit works with the SQ 05.2 at operating times of 5.6 s to 32 s in motor operation, so the normal stroke and the emergency stroke can be specified independently. Status is reported by a single switch for each end position, galvanically isolated and rated 0.1 A at 30 V DC, and an output contact signals that the fail-safe function is ready. A rated service life of 500 fail-safe operations (ESD cycles) is documented, which defines the number of emergency actions before overhaul.
Engineering Design of the AUMA FQM 05.1
The valve attachment of the AUMA FQM 05.1 is EN ISO 5211 F07 as standard with F10 as an option, and the splined coupling accepts shafts up to 25.4 mm cylindrical, 22 mm square or 22 mm two-flat. The swing angle is adjustable between 80 and 96 degrees, which is narrower than the standard SQ actuator range because the fail-safe movement has to end at a defined stop.
The unit weighs about 63 kg before the SQ actuator and controls are added, so the tall assembly should be supported on the valve with suitable brackets. Under vibration it is rated 0.3 g with the F07 flange and 0.5 g with F10 across 10 to 200 Hz. Mounting is vertical or horizontal with a support, and a downward-pointing position is excluded. Protection is IP68 with KS coating, and the ambient range of -30 °C to +70 °C (option -40 °C to +60 °C) applies to the standard FQM, whereas the explosion-proof FQMEx 05.1 is limited to -30 °C to +60 °C.
Key Features
The AUMA FQM 05.1 adds an independent mechanical safety layer to a compact part-turn valve.
- A minimum torque of 150 Nm matches the top of the SQ 05.2 tripping range.
- Fail-safe time is set at the factory between 9 s and 34 s and lengthens as valve torque rises.
- Two independent triggers, a 24 V DC ESD input and mains failure, can start the emergency stroke.
- F07 standard flange with F10 option accepts shafts up to 25.4 mm, which suits compact ball and butterfly valves.
- Galvanically isolated end position switches and a ready contact feed the safety system.
- AUMA documents 500 fail-safe operations, which helps plan proof tests and overhaul.
- The explosion-proof FQMEx 05.1 is covered by a separate AUMA data sheet.
- IP68 protection and KS coating stand up to coastal installation.
Selection Guidance for the AUMA FQM 05.1
Specifying the AUMA FQM 05.1 starts with the safety function definition. Decide whether the safe position is OPEN or CLOSED, which trigger initiates it, and how fast it must act. The fail-safe time of 9 s to 34 s is set at the factory, so it must be stated at order. Then check that the valve’s torque in the safe direction does not exceed what the unit can deliver, bearing in mind AUMA’s note that the operating time grows with the torque demand.
Finally, confirm the integration: the unit needs a 24 V DC ESD signal, and the SQ 05.2 needs AC actuator controls. Plan the cabinet and cabling accordingly.
Industrial Applications
The AUMA FQM 05.1 serves small emergency isolation valves: fuel supply shut-off, chemical injection stop valves, steam and condensate isolation on small lines, and fire water zone valves where a loss of power must still produce a safe valve position. Because the unit works with the SQ 05.2, it suits skid-mounted packages and compact process modules in industrial zones.
In Oman and the GCC, Seven Star LLC supplies the FQM 05.1 on request with regional technical backing.
Next sizes up: AUMA FQM 07.1, AUMA FQM 10.1 and AUMA FQM/FQMEx fail-safe unit family.
The matching drive belongs to the AUMA SQ part-turn actuator range, the AUMA MATIC AM/AC integral actuator controls supply the controls, and hazardous-area projects pair the explosion-proof FQMEx with the AUMA SQEx explosion-proof part-turn actuator.

About brand
Electric actuators for industrial valves are the core of AUMA's business. Founded in 1964 and based in Müllheim, Germany, the company builds multi-turn, part-turn and linear actuators with matching gearboxes and actuator controls, in modular combinations that are fixed at the time of order.
Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier listing AUMA actuators, gearboxes, fail-safe units and the SIMA2 master station for valve automation projects and replacements in Oman and the GCC.
AUMA actuator and gearbox types
SA multi-turn actuators handle open-close duty on gate and globe valves, and SAR is the modulating version; the listing includes the SA 07.2, SA 10.2 and SA 25.1. SAEx and SAREx are the explosion-proof equivalents. Part-turn duty on ball and butterfly valves is covered by SQ and the modulating SQR, or by an SA actuator combined with a GS part-turn gearbox. LE linear thrust units convert multi-turn output to thrust, and GHT multi-turn gearboxes extend the torque range up to 120,000 Nm. PROFOX is the compact actuator line. Special items include the seawater-resistant SGM and SGMR part-turn actuators with bronze housings, the SVC and SVCR globe valve actuators and the FQM fail-safe unit. Integral controls come as AM or AC versions.Where AUMA electric actuators are used
AUMA actuators are found in water, power, oil and gas, marine and general industry. In practice that means isolation and control valves in water treatment and pumping stations, power plant steam and cooling systems, tank farms and pipelines, and sluice gates and dampers.Ordering AUMA actuators and parts: what we need
