Beamex MC4 Documenting Process Calibrator
Overview
Beamex MC4 is a compact documenting process calibrator that was designed so that calibration results travel straight from the instrument in the field to the calibration database. Instrument data can be sent from a computer to the MC4, and results can be uploaded back to a computer running Beamex CMX calibration software, which means calibration certificates can be created automatically. As a multifunction instrument, the Beamex MC4 handles pressure, temperature and electrical signals, so a technician does not have to carry several separate meters to the plant.
Seven Star LLC supplies the Beamex MC4 on request to industrial and utility customers in Oman and the GCC, with engineering support in Muscat. Teams that want a documenting workflow without the cost of a touch-screen communicator can choose the MC4 for routine transmitter and gauge calibration and keep a Beamex MC6 advanced field calibrator and communicator for fieldbus and HART configuration work.
Documenting Calibration Principle
A documenting calibrator is a calibrator that knows what it is calibrating. In the Beamex MC4, instrument details such as tag, range, tolerance and test points are downloaded from CMX, and the calibration mode then guides the technician through the as-found and as-left test. The MC4 generates or measures at each point, compares input and output, calculates the error and shows whether it passes, and stores the full record. The error can be displayed as a percentage or as an error in input or output engineering units, which matches the way transmitters are specified.
Temperature accuracy is improved because the correction coefficients of a platinum resistance thermometer probe can be programmed into the MC4, so sensor errors are compensated in the reading. Pressure can be checked with difference measurement between two modules, or with redundancy measurement in which an internal and external module measure the same pressure at once and an alarm sounds if they disagree. A leak test function shows pressure drop and leak rate over a programmable time, which is useful for verifying tubing and instrument connections before a calibration.
Engineering Design of the Beamex MC4
The Beamex MC4 uses a 60 x 60 mm, 160 x 160 pixel backlit LCD with a menu-based multilingual interface and a full numeric membrane keypad. It weighs 720 to 830 g and measures 215 x 102 x 49 mm. The rechargeable NiMH battery of 4000 mAh gives 13 to 24 hours in measurement mode, and an optional dry battery cartridge with four AA alkaline cells provides 4 to 8 hours when rechargeable power is unavailable, which is useful on a remote site away from a charger.
Pressure measurement uses internal NPM modules from 200 mbar to 160 bar with one-year uncertainty as low as 0.015 % of full scale plus 0.035 % of reading, a barometric option for absolute readings and the same external EXT modules used with the MC2, MC5 and MC6 calibrators. Each unit leaves the factory with a traceable accredited calibration certificate. Programmable alarms, damping filters, a bar graph display, step and ramp functions, user setups and scaling with a root transfer function for flow applications complete the software features.
Key Features
The Beamex MC4 adds documenting capability and advanced measurement functions to a compact calibrator:
- Documenting operation with CMX software produces automatic calibration certificates and removes manual transcription errors from the workflow.
- PRT sensor coefficients can be stored to correct probe errors and raise temperature measurement accuracy.
- Error percentage display and error in input or output units speed up transmitter calibration and match the instrument tolerance format.
- Leak test function reports pressure drop and leak rate over a programmable period for connection and tubing checks.
- Redundancy and difference modes use two pressure modules to cross-check one measurement or to read differential pressure.
- Programmable step and ramp generation, alarms based on value or rate of change and damping support switch and slow-response tests.
- Internal pressure module accuracy of 0.015 % FS plus 0.035 % of reading suits tighter tolerance process transmitters.
- Optional dry battery cartridge with four AA cells keeps the calibrator running during extended field work away from mains power.
Industrial Applications
The MC4 is intended for general process calibration across oil and gas, power, water, chemical and manufacturing facilities where pressure, temperature and electrical instruments must be calibrated on a schedule and the results documented. Typical tasks include pressure transmitters and gauges, temperature transmitters with RTD or thermocouple inputs, I/P converters, flow transmitters by frequency or pulse, and switches. It is not intrinsically safe and should be used in safe areas or with the proper permits.
For Omani quality and maintenance departments, Seven Star LLC helps match the MC4 to the plant calibration plan, including pressure modules, probe selection and software links. In metrology rooms it can be used with a bench instrument such as the Martel 3001 multi-function temperature and pressure calibrator for comparison, and in the field alongside the Emerson 475 field communicator when HART configuration is needed after calibration. Beamex calibrators and accessories listed here
The handheld calibrators differ mainly in scope:- MC6: advanced field calibrator and communicator
- MC6-Ex: the intrinsically safe field calibrator for hazardous areas
- MC4: documenting process calibrator
- MC2: hand-held process calibrator
Where Beamex calibrators are used
Any plant with a calibration program is a user: oil and gas facilities, power stations, water utilities, pharmaceutical and food plants across the GCC. A documenting calibrator stores the as-found and as-left results of each test, so they can be transferred to calibration software instead of being written down by hand. In classified areas the MC6-Ex lets work continue without a hot work permit for the instrument itself.Ordering Beamex calibrators: what we need
A Beamex calibrator is configured to order. Tell us the model, the internal pressure module ranges, any external pressure modules, the communicator protocols you need (for example HART), and the accessories: pumps, hoses, cases and test leads. For the MB state the temperature range. If you need accredited calibration certificates from the manufacturer, say so at the start because it is an order option.Browse Beamex products by category: Portable Test & Measurement.
