SciAps X-550 Handheld XRF Analyzer for Alloy PMI

Description

A light handheld XRF gun designed for positive material identification at welds

The SciAps X-550 is a handheld X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analyzer for alloy identification and positive material identification (PMI). SciAps designed it for non-destructive testing users who must reach awkward locations and welds, and at 2.98 lb (about 1.35 kg) with battery SciAps describes it as the lightest, fastest XRF gun it has made.

A miniaturized X-ray tube is tuned for low atomic number elements, which matters in refinery and process plant work. The manufacturer highlights silicon measurement for sulfidic corrosion and low magnesium in aluminum alloys, plus residual element analysis for API 751 and API 5L style requirements.

Why it is used on piping, welds and process equipment

PMI is used to confirm that the alloy installed is the alloy specified, for example carbon steel against low-alloy or stainless grades in refinery piping, and to check welds, fasteners and fittings. The X-550 delivers fast results on common alloys and uses a pre-configured Residuals app that sets testing times for low Cr, Cu and Ni and calculates the sum, so operators do not change test times in the field. A patent-pending Aluminum App is optimized for similar aluminum grades.

XRF does not measure carbon. Where carbon content is needed, for example to separate L and H grades of stainless, SciAps offers its Z-series laser (LIBS) analyzers, which can be packaged with the X-550 in a OneBox. See the SciAps Z-903 handheld LIBS analyzer and other portable test instruments.

Before you order

Handheld XRF analyzers contain an X-ray tube, so check the radiation-safety registration, operator training and import requirements that apply to your site and country before purchase. Confirm which apps you need (Alloy, Residuals, Aluminum, others), the calibration check routine, and the accessories and service programs. The manufacturer lists the standard library at 500 plus grades and notes new apps are added regularly, so ask for the current app list for your serial number.

About brand

SciAps, based in Andover, USA, makes handheld analyzers that identify what a metal or mineral is made of, using X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). The SciAps handheld LIBS units are the ones inspectors usually ask about, because LIBS can reach light elements. Seven Star LLC sources and supplies SciAps analyzers for inspection and material verification work in Oman, including the Z-903 listed on this page.

SciAps LIBS analyzers: the Z-900 series

A SciAps LIBS analyzer fires a pulsed laser at the sample to create a small plasma, and an on-board spectrometer reads the light it emits. Which elements the unit can report depends on the spectrometer range fitted. The Z-900 series is built in three levels, Z-901, Z-902 and Z-903, with variants such as the Z-901 CSi, Z-902 Carbon and Z-903 Carbon. The manufacturer gives the Z-901 a 200 to 420 nm range and the listed Z-903 the widest one, 190 to 950 nm, which adds elements such as hydrogen, fluorine, nitrogen, oxygen and sulfur.

Ordering a SciAps analyzer: what we need

Tell us the materials you test (carbon steel, stainless, aluminum, nickel alloys, ores) and the elements you must report, since that decides between the Z-901, Z-902 and Z-903 and the calibrations loaded. State whether the work is PMI on site, scrap sorting or geochemistry. For GCC inspection companies, list any client specification the results must satisfy.
