SciAps X-200 Handheld XRF Alloy Analyzer

Description

A workhorse handheld XRF analyzer for alloy verification and scrap sorting

The SciAps X-200 is a handheld XRF analyzer aimed at buyers who want high speed and precision at a lower price than the top-end models. The manufacturer calls it the workhorse choice for scrap processing and non-destructive testing, and it is fast on all alloy families including aluminum.

It uses a 50 kV tube with a silicon drift detector and tests common alloys in 1 to 2 seconds or less. Factory calibrations are provided, and user-defined empirical calibrations can be added.

Using it on scrap, stock and incoming material

The X-200 is positioned for yard and warehouse work where many different alloys are sorted quickly. The Alloy App verifies metals in one tap, and the analyzer uses pre-set test times to measure low concentrations of Cr, Ni and Cu and calculate their sum. SciAps notes it separates aluminum grades such as 3003, 3004, 3005, cast 356 and 357, and 2014 and 2024 that confound some other XRF guns.

For another handheld XRF in the catalogue see the Thermo Fisher Niton XL5 Plus. XRF does not measure carbon; SciAps offers LIBS analyzers such as the Z-903 for that, and the X and Z can be packaged in a OneBox.

Before you order

The X-200 contains an X-ray tube, so confirm radiation-safety registration, operator training and import requirements for your site. Confirm the apps (Alloy, Precious Metals, Car Cats, Mining, Soil, RoHS), the library needs, and the service and calibration program. Browse portable test and measurement for related instruments. The X-200 is heavier and larger than the X-550, so consider weight if the work is at height or in confined positions.

How the SciAps X-200 works

The X-200 sends X-rays from a small tube onto the surface of a metal sample. The atoms in the metal give off their own X-rays in return, and each element does so at a known energy. A silicon drift detector counts these and the software turns the counts into element percentages. The result is matched against a library of grades, so the operator can read the alloy name on the screen within a second or two.

Where the X-200 is used

  • Positive material identification of alloys
  • Scrap sorting
  • Incoming goods checks
  • Welding and fabrication checks
  • Mining, soil and RoHS screening with the matching apps

Selection checklist for the X-200

  • Alloy families to be tested, including aluminum
  • Apps needed, such as Alloy, Precious Metals or Soil
  • Test time required
  • Grade library size
  • Weight and handling
  • Battery and hot-swap needs
  • Connectivity, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, USB and GPS
  • Local radiation safety rules for operators

Installation, commissioning and maintenance notes for the X-200

Charge the battery and run the check against the supplied stainless steel standard before work begins. Keep the measuring window clean. Hold the analyzer firmly against a clean, flat spot on the sample. Follow the radiation safety rules that apply at your site. Add grades with the Profile Builder software when needed.

About brand

SciAps, based in Andover, USA, makes handheld analyzers that identify what a metal or mineral is made of, using X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). The SciAps handheld LIBS units are the ones inspectors usually ask about, because LIBS can reach light elements. Seven Star LLC sources and supplies SciAps analyzers for inspection and material verification work in Oman, including the Z-903 listed on this page.

SciAps LIBS analyzers: the Z-900 series

A SciAps LIBS analyzer fires a pulsed laser at the sample to create a small plasma, and an on-board spectrometer reads the light it emits. Which elements the unit can report depends on the spectrometer range fitted. The Z-900 series is built in three levels, Z-901, Z-902 and Z-903, with variants such as the Z-901 CSi, Z-902 Carbon and Z-903 Carbon. The manufacturer gives the Z-901 a 200 to 420 nm range and the listed Z-903 the widest one, 190 to 950 nm, which adds elements such as hydrogen, fluorine, nitrogen, oxygen and sulfur.

Ordering a SciAps analyzer: what we need

Tell us the materials you test (carbon steel, stainless, aluminum, nickel alloys, ores) and the elements you must report, since that decides between the Z-901, Z-902 and Z-903 and the calibrations loaded. State whether the work is PMI on site, scrap sorting or geochemistry. For GCC inspection companies, list any client specification the results must satisfy.
