Overview

Measurement and Operating Principle

The Europa 4520 operates as a dry block calibrator by default: a metal heating/cooling block with a 35 x 160mm calibration volume houses removable insert wells sized to accept reference and test sensors side by side. Electrical heating and thermoelectric or mechanical cooling elements bring the block to a stable, uniform set-point temperature, against which the unit under test is compared. With accessory conversion kits, the same instrument becomes a stirred liquid bath, a blackbody radiation source for infrared thermometer calibration, a surface sensor calibrator, or – using ITS-90 fixed-point cells such as gallium melt or water triple point – a primary-standard fixed-point system with uncertainties as low as 0.0005°C (0.5mK).

Stability is specified at ±0.03°C for the Basic and Site models and ±0.01°C for the Advanced model, with radial uniformity between wells as tight as <0.008°C in dry block mode. The Site model adds a single-channel indicator for a reference probe, while the Advanced model includes a three-channel indicator for simultaneous reference and unit-under-test readings, automatic temperature cycling, data logging, and networked control via I-Cal Easy LOG software over Ethernet or USB.
