Thermo Fisher Niton XL5 Plus Handheld XRF Analyzer

Description

Overview

The Thermo Fisher Niton XL5 Plus is a handheld X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analyzer sold under the Thermo Scientific brand for fast, non-destructive elemental analysis in the field. Thermo Fisher Scientific positions it for applications where versatility, low limits of detection and high sample throughput are critical, from positive material identification of piping and welds to scrap sorting, coating measurement, precious metals, mining exploration and soil screening. At 1.3 kg including the battery, Thermo Fisher describes it as the smallest and lightest handheld XRF analyzer using X-ray tube technology.

Seven Star LLC supplies the Thermo Fisher Niton XL5 Plus, together with accessories such as test stands, shields and spare batteries, to inspection companies, refineries, fabrication shops, laboratories and mining operations in Oman and the GCC. We help customers choose calibration modes for their materials, and we provide model selection support from Muscat.

Measurement Principle

XRF works by irradiating the sample with X-rays. When an incoming photon ejects an inner-shell electron from an atom, an electron from a higher shell fills the vacancy and releases a fluorescent X-ray whose energy is characteristic of that element. The Thermo Fisher Niton XL5 Plus generates its excitation with a miniature 5 W X-ray tube with a silver anode, operating from 6 to 50 kV and up to 500 microamps, and a six-position filter wheel tailors the beam to cover a wide spectral range. The current is adjusted dynamically for optimal sensitivity on each analysis.

The fluorescent X-rays are collected by a high count rate, high resolution, extra-large area silicon drift detector with a 1 micron graphene window. Thermo Fisher notes that the graphene window ensures optimum sensitivity for each measurement, even for light elements, and the analyzer covers magnesium to uranium, with sodium detected from the spectrum. Software in the Thermo Fisher Niton XL5 Plus converts the spectrum into element concentrations and matches alloys against grade libraries, presenting results in real time. As a general point, XRF reads the surface layer, so surface preparation and coatings must be considered when verifying base metal grades.

Engineering Design of the Thermo Fisher Niton XL5 Plus

The Thermo Fisher Niton XL5 Plus measures 242.56 x 208.17 x 67.90 mm, and its compact geometry is designed to reach tight welds, corners and joints. Standard ProGuard detector protection reduces the risk of damage when measuring sharp items. The standard spot is 8 mm, with an optional 3 mm small-spot collimator for small parts and narrow weld beads. A tilting, colour resistive touchscreen with swipe functions works with gloved hands, and optional directional keys add usability.

Power comes from a 12 V lithium-ion battery or a 12 V DC supply, and hot-swap functionality keeps the analyzer running during battery changes. Integrated CCD macro and micro cameras record overview images and exact measurement positions, internal GPS tags each reading, and WiFi, USB-C and Bluetooth handle data transfer, printing and barcode readers. The analyzer stores about 130,000 readings with spectra on 16 GB of industrial-grade storage and runs NitonConnect PC software. The housing is rated IP54 and operates from 0 to 50 degrees C, with an external fan recommended above 33 degrees C.

Key Features

The main reasons inspection teams choose the Thermo Fisher Niton XL5 Plus are listed below.

  • A 5 W silver-anode X-ray tube and six-position filter wheel deliver fast results across a wide range of elements.
  • The large-area silicon drift detector with graphene window gives low detection limits, including light elements such as Mg, Al and Si.
  • At 1.3 kg it reduces operator fatigue during long PMI campaigns.
  • Calibration modes include General Metals, Precious Metals, Light Metal Quick Sort, Coatings, Mining, Soils, Electronic Alloys, Plastics and TestAll.
  • Default alloy libraries follow SAE, AISI, ASTM, AA, DIN and GB standards, and users can create and edit their own.
  • Macro and micro cameras plus GPS document exactly where each reading was taken.
  • Hot-swap batteries keep the analyzer powered during battery replacement.
  • An IP54 splash and dust resistant housing suits field and plant use.

Industrial Applications

In oil and gas, petrochemical and power plants, the Thermo Fisher Niton XL5 Plus is used for positive material identification of pipes, flanges, valves, bolts and weld metal, helping prevent mix-ups between carbon steel, low alloy, stainless and nickel alloys in critical service. Fabricators use the Thermo Fisher Niton XL5 Plus for incoming material verification, while scrap yards use point-and-shoot sorting. Other applications include coating thickness and coat weight measurement, precious metal assay, geochemical exploration and heavy metal screening of soils. In Oman these needs arise at refineries and petrochemical plants in Sohar and Duqm, at fabrication yards and at mining projects in the interior.

Good Practice for PMI Programs

As general guidance, a PMI program with the Thermo Fisher Niton XL5 Plus should define which components are tested, the acceptance criteria per grade, and how results are recorded and traced. Running the built-in system check and measuring check samples at the start of each shift confirms the analyzer is performing correctly, and grinding through paint or scale to clean metal gives reliable readings.

About brand
Thermo Fisher Scientific builds laboratory and analytical instruments, and gas analysis by infrared spectroscopy is one of its instrument lines. Seven Star LLC lists the Thermo Fisher MAX-iR FTIR gas analyzer and sources it, with the options a project specifies, for plants and laboratories in Oman and the GCC that need to measure several gas components with one instrument.

The MAX-iR FTIR gas analyzer

An FTIR analyzer passes infrared light through a gas cell and records the whole absorption spectrum at once. Each compound absorbs at its own wavelengths, so one measurement can report many gases together, including species that simpler single-gas analyzers cannot separate. Thermo Fisher describes the MAX-iR for in-line process monitoring, batch sampling, gas purity certification, emissions testing and ambient air monitoring, and catalogs separate configurations for those duties.

Ordering a Thermo Fisher gas analyzer: what we need

Tell us the gases to be measured and the expected range of each, the background gas, sample pressure, temperature and moisture content, and whether the duty is process, emissions or purity testing. Add the supply voltage and any area classification. We check the configuration against the manufacturer's documentation and provide the datasheet with the quotation on request.
