Fluke 1587 FC Insulation Multimeter
Overview
The Fluke 1587 FC Insulation Multimeter puts a digital insulation resistance tester and a full-featured true-rms digital multimeter into one compact handheld unit. An electrician or motor technician can therefore check supply voltage, prove isolation, run an insulation test on a cable or winding and then carry on with general troubleshooting without changing instruments. Fluke positions it as the high-performance member of its 2-in-1 insulation DMM range, with five test voltages from 50 V to 1000 V and a measuring range that reaches 2 GΩ.
Seven Star LLC supplies the Fluke 1587 FC to electrical maintenance teams in the Sultanate of Oman and across the GCC, with engineering support in Muscat. Utilities, oil and gas operators, desalination plants and electrical contractors in the region rely on routine insulation testing to catch moisture ingress and contamination in motors, cables and switchgear before they turn into earth faults, and Seven Star LLC helps them source the meter and its accessories quickly.
Measurement Principle
For an insulation test the meter applies a regulated dc test voltage between a conductor and earth (or between conductors) and measures the very small leakage current that flows through the insulation; the ratio of voltage to current is displayed as resistance in MΩ or GΩ. The test voltage accuracy is specified as +20% / −0%, the short-circuit test current is 1 mA nominal, and the instrument can work into capacitive loads of up to 1 µF. When the test ends the meter automatically discharges the stored capacitive voltage, in under 0.5 second for 1 µF or less, and live-circuit detection blocks a test if more than 30 V is present on the terminals.
Insulation resistance alone is a single snapshot, so the Fluke Connect Measurements app extends the Fluke 1587 FC with Polarization Index (PI) and Dielectric Absorption Ratio (DAR) timed ratio tests displayed as TrendIt graphs. Because a healthy, dry winding shows insulation resistance rising over the test period while a wet or contaminated one stays flat, these ratios reveal problems that a spot reading can miss. The app also applies temperature compensation so that readings taken at different winding temperatures can be compared against a common baseline.
Engineering Design of the Fluke 1587 FC
As a multimeter the Fluke 1587 FC measures ac and dc voltage to 1000 V, dc millivolts, ac and dc current to 400 mA, resistance to 50 MΩ, continuity, capacitance to 9999 µF, frequency to 99.99 kHz, diode voltage drop and K-type thermocouple temperature from −40 °C to 537 °C, with Min/Max recording. DC voltage accuracy is ±(0.09% + 2) and the display is a large backlit 6000-count unit. A switchable low-pass filter removes the high-frequency carrier from variable frequency drive outputs so the technician sees the fundamental voltage the motor actually receives.
The meter runs on four AA batteries rated for about 1000 hours of meter use or at least 1000 insulation tests, measures 5.0 × 10.0 × 20.3 cm and weighs 550 g. It carries CAT IV 600 V and CAT III 1000 V ratings to IEC 61010, operates from −20 °C to 55 °C and is supplied with a remote probe, test leads, alligator clips, a K-type thermocouple and a hard carrying case. The remote probe lets the user trigger an insulation test from the probe tip while keeping both hands on the test point.
Key Features
The capabilities that make the Fluke 1587 FC a practical daily tool for electrical maintenance are:
- Five insulation test voltages (50, 100, 250, 500 and 1000 V) covering low-voltage control wiring through to 690 V class motors and cables.
- Insulation measurement from 0.01 MΩ to 2 GΩ with an insulation test smoothing function for steadier readings.
- PI/DAR timed ratio tests with TrendIt graphs through the Fluke Connect Measurements app.
- Memory storage and historical tracking of results on a phone or in the cloud instead of on paper.
- Live-circuit detection that inhibits the test above 30 V, and automatic discharge of capacitive voltage.
- VFD low-pass filter for accurate voltage readings on adjustable speed drive outputs.
- True-rms multimeter functions including capacitance, frequency, diode test and K-type temperature.
- Three-year standard warranty, extendable to five years through product registration within 45 days of purchase.
Industrial Applications
Low-voltage induction motors driving pumps, fans and compressors are the most common assets checked with the Fluke 1587 FC. Before a motor is energised after a shutdown, or when a protective device has tripped, a 500 V or 1000 V insulation test on the windings quickly separates a genuine winding fault from a supply or control problem. Typical candidates on Omani sites include machines such as the WEG W22 IE3 5.5 kW three-phase motor and the Siemens 1LA7 IEC squirrel-cage AC motor, where trending insulation resistance over time supports a condition-based maintenance plan.
Seven Star LLC supplies the Fluke 1587 FC to maintenance departments in Muscat, Sohar, Salalah and the wider GCC for cable acceptance testing, switchgear and low-voltage panel checks, generator inspections and troubleshooting of VFD-fed equipment. Teams that need a general-purpose industrial meter without the insulation function often pair it with the Fluke 87V Industrial Multimeter.

Where Fluke instruments are used
Fluke process calibrators are used for loop checks, transmitter calibration and valve tests in oil and gas, power and water plants. Clamp meters and insulation testers serve electrical maintenance on motors, switchgear and cables. The bench calibrators and reference multimeters are the working standards of electrical calibration laboratories in the GCC, where they calibrate multimeters, clamp meters, process tools and power analyzers.Ordering Fluke instruments: what we need
Send the exact model with its suffix, since versions differ. A Fluke 721, for example, is defined by its two pressure ranges, and a 729 by its maximum pressure. For bench calibrators, list the options you need, such as oscilloscope calibration or power quality options, the line voltage, and the type of calibration certificate you require from the manufacturer. For Fluke multimeters and clamp meters, add the kit contents wanted, such as probes, leads or cases.Browse Fluke products by category: Portable Test & Measurement.
