Bruel-Kjaer Type 2240

Description

Overview

The Brüel & Kjær Type 2240 (Bruel-Kjaer Type 2240) is an integrating-averaging sound level meter with Class 1 precision. It measures four parameters simultaneously — LAF, LAFmax, LAeq and LCpeak — with no setup required, which makes it a simple instrument for on-the-spot workplace and environmental noise checks.

The 2240 is a broadband meter: it does not perform 1/1- or 1/3-octave or statistical analysis, for which B&K offers the Type 2250 series. It is supplied with a Type 4188 prepolarized free-field microphone, and the Type 2240 A variant adds the Type 4231 sound level calibrator.

Key Features

  • Class 1 to IEC 61672-1:2002
  • LAF, LAFmax, LAeq and LCpeak measured simultaneously, 0.1 dB resolution
  • Total RMS range 30 to 140 dB in two manually selected ranges
  • Manually controlled measurement time from 1 s to 60 min
  • Type 4188 1/2 in. prepolarized free-field microphone
  • Powered by two AA alkaline batteries, approximately 16 h lifetime

Brüel & Kjær Type 2240 Ordering Code and Options

The product data lists two order numbers. Type 2240 is the sound level meter alone. Type 2240 A is the same meter delivered together with Sound Level Calibrator Type 4231, which is otherwise the only optional accessory named for the instrument.

Both versions include the Type 4188 prepolarized free-field 1/2 inch microphone, a random-incidence corrector, pouch, protective cover, screwdriver and two alkaline batteries. The supplied microphone is a free-field type, and the random-incidence corrector is the accessory provided for measurements that require random-incidence response.

The instrument has no setup menu. Controls are a power switch and three keys: start/stop, parameter select and range select (30-110 dB or 60-140 dB). All four parameters are measured in parallel, so the user only chooses which value is shown. The manufacturer points out that 1/3-octave or statistical analysis needs a more advanced instrument.

Brüel & Kjær Type 2240 Selection Notes

Three limits in the datasheet matter when choosing this meter. First, the noise floor is below 22 dB and the lower range starts at 30 dB, so it is not meant for very quiet rooms. Second, a single measurement can run from 1 second up to 60 minutes and is started and stopped by hand; the product data describes no logging or data storage. Third, an overload during a timed measurement is latched and shown with the results until they are cleared, so an affected reading cannot be overlooked.

Why Seven Star LLC

Seven Star LLC supplies Brüel & Kjær acoustic and vibration instrumentation to EHS teams, laboratories, consultancies and maintenance departments across Oman and the GCC. Each item is checked against the original B&K type number and order code before the order is confirmed, and the required accessories and calibration documentation are agreed with the customer in advance. Where a calibrator is required, the 2240 A version or a separate Type 4231 can be quoted.

About brand
The Brüel & Kjær items on this page are machine vibration monitoring products from Brüel & Kjær Vibro, the Darmstadt, Germany company set up in 2000. Its VIBROCONTROL monitors, rack modules and velocity sensors protect turbines, compressors, pumps and fans against damaging vibration. Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier that sources Brüel & Kjær Vibro monitoring modules, monitors and sensors for plants in Oman and the GCC, mostly as replacements for units already in service.

Brüel & Kjær Vibro product families

The largest group here is rack hardware: SM-610 monitoring modules in many variants (the suffix, as in SM-610-A02 or SM-610-118, fixes the version), the PS-610 power supply module and the CI-620 communication interface. Stand-alone monitors include the VIBROCONTROL 1000, the VC-920 and the VC-868/1, alongside the AMO-622 monitoring system. Sensors include the VS-068 and VS-069 velocity sensors. The manufacturer's present machinery protection platform is the VC-8000. Laboratory accelerometers and sound and vibration analyzers that carry the Brüel & Kjær name are a separate product line; send us the type number if that is what you need.

Where Brüel & Kjær vibration monitoring is used

Typical machines are steam and gas turbines, generators, centrifugal compressors, boiler feed pumps, cooling tower and process fans and gearboxes in power plants, oil and gas facilities, cement works and petrochemical plants. The monitors supply alarm and trip contacts to the plant protection system and measured values to the control room.

Ordering Brüel & Kjær Vibro parts: what we need

Send the complete type designation with its suffix, the order or part number from the label, and the serial number. For monitors add the measuring span, sensor type, supply voltage and output configuration, since many units are configured to order. For sensors give sensitivity, mounting direction, cable length, connector and the hazardous area approval. Photos of the label and of the rack help.
