Hydac ETS 1700 Electronic Temperature Switch with 4 Relay Outputs

Description

Overview

The Hydac ETS 1700 is an electronic temperature switch that evaluates a PT100 resistance sensor and turns the result into four independent switching decisions. It is used mainly together with the HYDAC TFP 100 temperature probe, which was developed specially for tank mounting, and it lets operators of hydraulic and lubrication systems watch oil temperature on a bright four-digit display while controlling heating and cooling equipment with its relays. An analog output of 4 .. 20 mA or 0 .. 10 V can be added for integration into PLC monitoring.

Seven Star LLC supplies the Hydac ETS 1700 to industrial operators in Oman and the GCC, where hydraulic oil and gearbox lubricant temperatures are strongly affected by high ambient heat. Our team in Muscat offers engineering support and can match the controller with the right probe, installation sleeve and cable. The Hydac ETS 1700 datasheet attached to this page is the manufacturer document in its US catalog edition with temperatures stated in °F.

Operating Principle

A PT100 sensor changes its electrical resistance in a known way as its temperature changes, and the Hydac ETS 1700 measures that resistance with its microprocessor electronics and linearizes it into a temperature reading between +32 and 212 °F (0 to +100 °C). The datasheet gives an accuracy of ≤ ±2.0 °F (±1.0 °C) for the display and analog output, and notes that the usable display range can be narrower if the connected probe has a smaller temperature range than the controller.

The measured temperature in the Hydac ETS 1700 is compared with four switching points that can be set independently of each other from the keypad, between 1.5 and 100 % of the measuring range, with the switch-back handled either by a hysteresis of 1 to 99 % or by a separate switch-back point. Each relay can be programmed as normally open or normally closed and delayed on switch-on or switch-off by up to 900 seconds. The Hydac ETS 1700 also stores the maximum temperature reached since switch-on or the last reset, which is valuable evidence when investigating an overheating event in a power pack.

Engineering Design of the Hydac ETS 1700

The Hydac ETS 1700 is built into a compact industrial housing with a front keypad, a red LED display with 13 mm digits and an IP 65 enclosure rating. The mounting position of the Hydac ETS 1700 is flexible: the sensor connection can be placed on the top or the bottom, and the keypad and display can be turned through 180 degrees, so the readout stays upright on whichever side the cable enters. The unit weighs approximately 800 g and is supplied with PG cable glands, mounting bolts, a 5-pole female connector in Binder series 681 for the probe and a 3 m sensor cable.

The four outputs of the Hydac ETS 1700 are relays with change-over contacts arranged in two groups, and each group has a common supply connection. The relays switch from 0.1 to 250 V AC or DC and from 0.009 to 2 A per output, with a switching capacity of 400 VA or 50 W, and the datasheet recommends varistors for inductive loads. The Hydac ETS 1700 runs from 22 to 32 V DC at about 200 mA and has reverse-polarity, over-voltage, override and short-circuit protection. The probe is ordered separately as a TFP 104 with Binder series 714 connector or a TFP 106 with M12x1 connector, and a tank installation sleeve is available for the TFP 100 family.

Key Features

The Hydac ETS 1700 replaces simple mechanical thermostats with a programmable controller. Key capabilities include:

  • Four independent limit relays with change-over contacts, each with its own switching point and switch-back setting.
  • Four-digit red LED display that shows actual temperature, a selected switching point or the stored maximum value.
  • Input for PT100 probes, designed mainly for the Hydac TFP 100 tank temperature probe.
  • Measuring range of +32 to 212 °F (0 to +100 °C) with accuracy of ≤ ±2.0 °F on display and analog output.
  • Switch-on and switch-off delays of 0.0 to 900.0 seconds, adjustable per relay from the keypad.
  • Optional analog output of 4 .. 20 mA or 0 .. 10 V for PLC integration, matching the 32 to 212 °F range.
  • Sensor connection on the top or bottom, with keypad and display that can be turned through 180 degrees.
  • Programming lock, selectable °C or °F display and an IP 65 housing for workshop and plant-room installation.

Industrial Applications

The manufacturer describes the Hydac ETS 1700 as suitable for controlling heating and cooling processes in hydraulic systems, and that matches typical work in Oman: hydraulic power units on offshore support vessels and drilling rigs, lubrication skids on compressors and turbines, gearbox oil systems on crushers and conveyors at mining sites, and oil-cooler control on press lines in the Sohar and Salalah industrial zones. With four limit relays, one controller can start an immersion heater at low oil temperature, switch a cooler or fan at the operating point, raise a pre-alarm and trip the machine at a safety limit.

In hot GCC climates the cooling circuit often runs close to its capacity, so the stored peak temperature of the Hydac ETS 1700 and its optional analog output help maintenance planners see how much margin remains. Engineers who prefer a separate sensor and transmitter architecture can compare the WIKA TR10 RTD sensor, the Jumo 902006 dual Pt100 RTD temperature sensor or the Moore Industries TRX temperature transmitter in our catalog. Seven Star LLC can advise which probe length and connector suit the tank design before an order is placed.

About brand
Hydraulic power units around the world carry Hydac parts: accumulators, filters, coolers, valves and the sensors that watch pressure and temperature. The company was founded in 1963 in Sulzbach/Saar, Germany. Seven Star LLC lists Hydac SB330 bladder accumulators, RFM return line filters and the EDS 3400 and ETS 1700 electronic switches, and sources Hydac spare parts for plants in Oman and the GCC.

Hydac product families

Hydac groups its program into hydraulics and filtration (filters, accumulators, sensors and measurement), control technology (valves, control blocks, ball valves), thermal management (air and fluid coolers) and drive technology (pumps, motors, cylinders). The four listed products come from the first group and are common on lube oil skids, presses, turbine control units and mobile machines.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Hydac ETS 1700 used for?
The Hydac ETS 1700 is an electronic temperature switch used mainly with the TFP 100 tank probe. It displays temperature and uses four relays to control heating and cooling in hydraulic systems, with an optional analog output of 4 .. 20 mA or 0 .. 10 V.
Does the Hydac ETS 1700 include the temperature probe?
No. According to the datasheet the temperature probe is a separate item, available as TFP 104 with a Binder series 714 connector or TFP 106 with an M12x1 connector. The controller is supplied with cable glands, mounting bolts, a 5-pole female connector and a 3 m sensor cable.
What can the four relays of the Hydac ETS 1700 do?
Each relay has an independent switching point and hysteresis or switch-back point, selectable N/C or N/O direction and a switch-on and switch-off delay up to 900 seconds. The contacts switch 0.1 to 250 V AC or DC and 0.009 to 2 A per output.
