Raychem RAYSTAT V5 Electronic Controller for Freeze Protection

Description

RAYSTAT V5 (catalog number RAYSTAT V5, part number 1244-022440) is the Raychem electronic controller for pipe freeze protection and temperature maintenance systems using Raychem self-regulating heating cables. It switches up to 25 A at 230 VAC directly, has a display, high and low temperature alarms and an alarm relay.

A DIN-rail or wall-mount controller with ambient and line sensing

RAYSTAT V5 is designed for operation with Raychem self-regulating heating cables, with line sensing and/or ambient sensing. In ambient mode its Proportional Ambient Sensing Control (PASC) algorithm varies the duty cycle with the ambient temperature; the datasheet example shows 60 percent energy saved at -5 C when the minimum temperature is -20 C and the set point is +5 C.

It can be pre-programmed in power-off mode over USB (a power bank, PB-POWERBANK, is an accessory), is offsite configurable, and password protected by a keylock. Alarms cover high and low temperature, sensor open or short circuit and heating cable open circuit.

Features stated in the datasheet

  • Pipe temperature monitoring with high and low temperature alarm; single-pole double-throw volt-free alarm relay.
  • Selectable set temperature 0 to +90 C (line sensing) and 0 to +30 C (ambient sensing); optional 0 to +250 C line sensing with the SM-PT100-1 module.
  • Polycarbonate IP65 enclosure with a 35 mm DIN rail supplied in the package.
  • Settings stored in nonvolatile memory; USB port for pre-set-up and firmware upgrades.

Accessories and what is in the box

The package contains the control unit, a DIN rail and one line sensor. Accessories: SENSOR-NTC-10M 1244-015847, SM-PT100-1 sensor module 1244-022441, HARD-78 PT100 sensor 213430-000, MONI-PT100-260/2 1244-006615, GM-TA-AS ambient sensor in enclosure 1244-017965 and PB-POWERBANK 1244-020365.

The datasheet warns that the controller is for use with Raychem heating cables only; warranty and system listing are invalidated with other cables.

Installation notes from the manual

The manual says the device must be installed in non-hazardous areas only, in a place without direct sunlight or high condensation; outdoors a sun and rain cover is recommended. Direct switching is possible up to 25 A; above that, use a suitably rated contactor controlled by the unit. Check the maximum circuit length for the breaker in the heating-cable datasheet.

The sensor position must match the mode, PIPE for line sensing or AIR for PASC, otherwise a pipe can freeze. For commissioning, simulate the sensor in PIPE mode because the PASC delay makes AIR mode unsuitable for this test. A 30 mA RCD is recommended and an external surge protector for thunderstorm areas.

Where it is used

General engineering note: this unit suits building services and industrial utility lines in non-hazardous areas, such as chilled water, condensate and cold-room drain lines and process water lines on 230 V single-phase power. It runs from a 230 VAC supply.

Because it is limited to non-hazardous areas, classified-area circuits need the Elexant controllers in the same Raychem range.

Information to send with an RFQ for the Raychem RAYSTAT V5 Electronic Controller for Freeze Protection

A heat-tracing controller is selected around the circuits it will manage, not only by its own data sheet. When you request a quotation for the Raychem RAYSTAT V5 Electronic Controller for Freeze Protection, tell us how many circuits it must control, the cable type and load current on each circuit, and whether control is by ambient or line sensing. List the sensor type you intend to use and the cable length back to the panel.

  • Supply voltage and the switching device required, mechanical relay or solid-state.
  • Alarm needs: low and high temperature, ground fault and loss of power.
  • Communication to the plant system, if any, and the protocol expected.
  • Installation location: control room panel, field mounted or hazardous area.

Sharing the existing heat-tracing design, or the line list it was based on, lets the controller set-up be checked before delivery and shortens commissioning on site.

About brand

Raychem is a brand of electric heat-tracing products. In 1972 Raychem patented self-regulating heating cable, whose output adjusts along its length to the surrounding temperature. The heat-tracing business passed from Raychem Corporation through Tyco, Pentair and nVent, and since January 2025 Raychem has been a brand of Chemelex, an independent company owned by Brookfield.

Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier in Muscat. We list Raychem heating cables and controllers with the official datasheet attached to each product page, for oil and gas, petrochemical and building projects in Oman and the GCC.
