JUMO exTHERM S200 Ex-ia Surface-Mounted Thermostat

Description

Thermostat for intrinsically safe circuits in process and plastics plants

The JUMO exTHERM S200 (type 605058) is a surface-mounted thermostat for intrinsically safe applications [Ex-ia]. It monitors and controls temperatures as a temperature monitor TW, a safety temperature monitor STW or a safety temperature limiter STB, and the data sheet names recycling and distillation plants as well as temperature control units as typical uses.

Together with ATEX protective sleeves, the device is suitable for installation in explosion-protected zones 0, 1 or 2 for gases, vapors and mists, or zones 21 or 22 for conductive and non-conductive dusts. The manufacturer lists the process industry, the plastics industry and mechanical and plant engineering as areas of application.

Push-In terminal technology speeds up wiring, an optional NAMUR circuit is available, temperature compensation keeps the switching point steady, and the device is free of cadmium.

The unit uses the same JUMO exTHERM family idea as other Ex thermostats, but this type is built for the intrinsically safe circuit. Its snap-action switch can be gold-plated for the small currents of Ex-i circuits, and the NAMUR option allows connection to a standard switch amplifier.

Selecting range, probe and function

The probe table gives each control range with its maximum probe temperature, probe length for 4, 6 and 8 mm diameters and a tolerance. For example, the 150 to 350 °C STB/STW range has a maximum probe temperature of 370 °C and a probe length of 82 mm at 6 mm, and the 0 to 100 °C TW range has a tolerance of +/-1.5 K.

The tolerance on STB and STW versions is stated as a negative offset, such as -9 K for the 40 to 110 °C range and -29 K for 350 to 500 °C, measured in the upper third of the scale or at the limit value. Keep this in mind when you set a limit value close to the permitted process maximum.

Rigid thermowell versions with extra code 702 for Ex-i service, and capillary versions with probe lines up to 5 m, allow either a direct insertion or a remote probe. The data sheet also lists mounting-plate dimensions and the thermowell options.

Order code elements include the design (rigid thermowell or capillary), control range for each thermostat, a switching capacity code 12 for 0.75 W, 30 V and 0.1 A, switching differential choices and capillary and probe details. Extra codes such as 702 for Ex-i versions with rigid shaft change the permitted medium temperature, so check the process connection table.

Safety functions follow the usual logic: the STB locks after trip and must be unlocked by hand after cooling, and STW and STB include self-monitoring of the measuring system. The mode of operation is type 2 according to DIN EN IEC 60730-2-9, with STB action types 2B, 2F, 2H, 2K, 2L, 2N, 2P and 2V.

Applications and conditions of use

This device suits plants where the switching circuit comes from an intrinsically safe isolating amplifier or barrier, such as a heated distillation vessel, a recycling plant or a temperature control unit. Intrinsically safe circuits require matching associated apparatus with values at or below those in the table.

Observe the special conditions for safe use stated in the certificates before installation, and download the certificates for your version from the manufacturer website. A switching point shift occurs when the ambient temperature at the head or capillary differs from the 22 °C calibration value, with a higher ambient giving a lower switching point.

The bending radius of the capillary must be at least 5 mm, and its length is limited to 5000 mm, or 3000 mm for the highest ranges. The device can be mounted in any position, and rated position follows DIN 16257 from NL 0 to NL 90.

About brand

JUMO is the German maker of temperature sensors, process controllers, pressure transmitters and liquid analysis instruments. Moritz Kurt Juchheim founded it in Fulda in 1948 as M. K. Juchheim KG, making glass thermometers with six employees. The name JUMO comes from the founder's name. It is still a family company headquartered in Fulda, and the parent company has been called JUMO GmbH & Co. KG since 2003.

Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier in Muscat. We list JUMO RTD and thermocouple probes, thermowells, transmitters, controllers, recorders and water analysis instruments, and supply them to process plants, OEMs, HVAC contractors and water utilities in Oman and the GCC by type number.

Choosing a temperature sensor starts with the range and accuracy. A Pt100 RTD is accurate and stable from about -200 to 600 °C and is the usual choice in process plants. A thermocouple (type K or J, for example) covers much higher temperatures and responds faster but is less accurate. The wiring also matters: a 3-wire or 4-wire Pt100 connection cancels the resistance of the cable, while a 2-wire connection adds an error that grows with cable length. That is why a head-mounted transmitter is often fitted close to the sensor.

Where JUMO products are used

In Oman and the GCC, JUMO sensors and controllers are used in oil and gas and chemical plants, food and beverage production, plastics and metal heat treatment, HVAC and district cooling, water and wastewater treatment, swimming pools and marine applications.

Ordering JUMO products: what we need

Send the JUMO type number and the full order code from the label (for example 902020/10-...). For probes, add the sensor type (Pt100, Pt1000, type K or J), the number of wires, the insertion length and diameter, and the process connection. For controllers, add the input, outputs and supply voltage.
