JUMO frostTHERM-ATE Electronic Frost Protection Thermostat

Description

Electronic frost thermostat for ventilation and air conditioning systems

The JUMO frostTHERM-ATE (type 604170) is an electronic frost protection thermostat for the air-side temperature monitoring of ventilation and air conditioning systems. It prevents freeze damage by switching off ventilators, opening heating valves, closing air flaps or triggering other measures against freezing.

The switching point can be set freely between 1 and 10 °C, and the device works either as a monitor with automatic reset or as a limiter with manual reset. The setting is made on a two-digit 7-segment display with two keys, without opening the case lid.

A self-monitoring function checks the probe line. If a capillary tube breaks, the thermostat switches to the frost function and the monitored plant stays protected.

Regulated membrane heating keeps the unit working down to -15 °C ambient, and the thermostat can be used where the air-handling unit is mounted in an unheated space. It is suitable for industrial use as well as for households and small businesses.

Order code and accessories

The order code is 604170 / 02 / design 5 / range 008 / probe line / probe material 40 / extra code. Stock versions in the data sheet are 604170/02-5-008-2000-40/000 (part 60003410) and 604170/02-5-008-6000-40/000 (part 60003411). Extra code 102 gives a neutral device version, where the customer must comply with local labeling rules.

The delivery includes the device, the operating manual, two M16 x 1.5 cable fittings, two screws for direct mounting and a rubber plug for routing the probe line. Accessories are a mounting flange (00604453), holders in packs of three or six and a spare cable fitting.

The F-gas filling is R134a, with 0.13 g for the 2 m version and 0.35 g for the 6 m version, which the data sheet lists with a GWP of 1430.

Two analog outputs of 0 to 10 V are provided: one represents the probe temperature from 0 to 15 °C, and the other follows the valve control signal. A valve control signal input of 0 to 10 V lets the thermostat take over the heating valve when frost conditions occur, and the lines may be up to 300 m long with a 1.5 mm2 conductor.

The relay is a floating changeover contact with a minimum switching capacity of AC/DC 12 V and 100 mA and a maximum of AC 230 V, 6(2) A. A status LED shows the switching position, and the red two-digit display shows settings and the reset in manual mode.

The unit can be wall mounted directly with two screws, or fitted with the mounting flange accessory. A cable fitting M16 x 1.5 is included in a pack of two, and a rubber plug keeps the probe line routed neatly out of the housing.

Installation in air handling units

Lay the probe line across the air stream behind the heating coil or in the fresh air section, with the minimum response length of 250 mm exposed to the coldest air. Longer lines cover a larger cross-section and detect cold spots that a single point would miss.

The analog outputs let a building management system display the probe temperature, and the valve control input and output let the thermostat override a controller signal so that a heating valve opens when frost threatens. A reset button can be connected for manual reset operation.

Electrical connection uses spring-cage terminals for up to 2 x 1.5 mm2 or 1 x 2.5 mm2, and the case has an M16 cable fitting for 5 to 10 mm cable. The vibration class is 3M2 and the device meets the EMC requirements of DIN EN 61326-1, class B.

The typical hysteresis of about 2 K means the relay resets when the air has warmed by about 2 K above the switching point in automatic mode. In manual mode the reset key must be pressed after the temperature has recovered, which is the preferred behavior for many fan and damper circuits.

About brand

JUMO is the German maker of temperature sensors, process controllers, pressure transmitters and liquid analysis instruments. Moritz Kurt Juchheim founded it in Fulda in 1948 as M. K. Juchheim KG, making glass thermometers with six employees. The name JUMO comes from the founder's name. It is still a family company headquartered in Fulda, and the parent company has been called JUMO GmbH & Co. KG since 2003.

Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier in Muscat. We list JUMO RTD and thermocouple probes, thermowells, transmitters, controllers, recorders and water analysis instruments, and supply them to process plants, OEMs, HVAC contractors and water utilities in Oman and the GCC by type number.

Choosing a temperature sensor starts with the range and accuracy. A Pt100 RTD is accurate and stable from about -200 to 600 °C and is the usual choice in process plants. A thermocouple (type K or J, for example) covers much higher temperatures and responds faster but is less accurate. The wiring also matters: a 3-wire or 4-wire Pt100 connection cancels the resistance of the cable, while a 2-wire connection adds an error that grows with cable length. That is why a head-mounted transmitter is often fitted close to the sensor.

Where JUMO products are used

In Oman and the GCC, JUMO sensors and controllers are used in oil and gas and chemical plants, food and beverage production, plastics and metal heat treatment, HVAC and district cooling, water and wastewater treatment, swimming pools and marine applications.

Ordering JUMO products: what we need

Send the JUMO type number and the full order code from the label (for example 902020/10-...). For probes, add the sensor type (Pt100, Pt1000, type K or J), the number of wires, the insertion length and diameter, and the process connection. For controllers, add the input, outputs and supply voltage.
