E2S GNExB2X10 Explosion-Proof Xenon Strobe Beacon

Description

Overview

The E2S GNExB2X10 is a globally certified explosion-proof 10 Joule xenon strobe beacon built around a corrosion-proof GRP (glass reinforced polyester) enclosure. E2S Warning Signals designed it for visual alarm signalling in Zone 1, Zone 2, Zone 21 and Zone 22 hazardous areas, and for Class I Division 2 locations under North American codes. With a measured effective intensity of more than 479 cd, the E2S GNExB2X10 is intended for situations where a warning has to be seen over long distances or against bright ambient light, which is a common problem on open process plant, tank farms and offshore decks across the Gulf.

Seven Star LLC supplies the E2S GNExB2X10 to oil and gas, petrochemical, power and water customers in Oman and the GCC. As a trusted supplier of E2S hazardous area signalling, we offer engineering support in Muscat, and we help project teams select the right voltage, lens colour, cable entry and certification version before the order is placed, so that each beacon arrives configured to match the fire and gas cause-and-effect matrix of the site.

Operating Principle

A xenon strobe produces light by discharging stored energy through a gas-filled flash tube. In the E2S GNExB2X10, a 10 Joule (10 Ws) discharge is released at the selected flash rate, generating a short, very intense pulse of white light that is then filtered by a coloured lens. E2S quotes a measured effective intensity of 479.39 cd and a measured peak of 110,243 cd referenced to I.E.S methods, against a calculated 500 cd effective and 1,000,000 cd peak based on stored energy. Because the flash is brief and bright, the eye registers it clearly even in daylight, which is why xenon beacons remain the preferred choice for high-ambient outdoor areas.

Four flash patterns are available: 1 Hz (60 flashes per minute), 1.3 Hz (80 fpm), 1.5 Hz (90 fpm) and a double flash at 120 fpm. When several units are wired on the same circuit, the E2S GNExB2X10 synchronises automatically, so a group of beacons flashes together instead of producing a confusing, random pattern. The electronics are tropicalised and conformal coated for 99% relative humidity, and the xenon tube is user replaceable and secured against shock and vibration.

Engineering Design of the E2S GNExB2X10

The flameproof enclosure of the E2S GNExB2X10 is moulded from UV-stable GRP in a natural red finish, with a threaded flame path, an enclosure volume of under 2 litres and an overall weight of about 3.5 kg. The lens is high-impact borosilicate glass, protected by an A4 316 stainless steel guard that is supplied as standard, while the colour filter is made of UV-stable polycarbonate and can be changed in the field. Available filter colours are amber, blue, clear, green, magenta, red and yellow. Ingress protection is IP66/67 to EN 60529 and Type 4/4X/3R/13 to UL50E/NEMA 250.

Installation is simplified by three M20 x 1.5 mm cable entries with stopping plugs, adaptors for 1/2″ NPT, 3/4″ NPT or M25 glands, and a generous termination area with duplicated 0.5 to 2.5 mm² terminals for loop-in and loop-out wiring. A blocking diode is fitted for line monitoring, and an end-of-line resistor (minimum 500 Ohm 2 W or 3k3 Ohm 0.5 W) or diode can be installed on DC versions. Supply options are 24 V DC (20–28 V), 48 V DC (42–54 V), 115 V AC and 230 V AC.

Key Features

The main engineering advantages of the E2S GNExB2X10 listed in the E2S datasheet are:

  • A 10 Joule xenon strobe with over 479 cd measured effective intensity for long-distance visual alarm signalling.
  • Four selectable flash rates, including a double-flash pattern, to separate different alarm conditions on site.
  • Automatic synchronisation of multiple beacons on the same system for a coherent, plant-wide warning.
  • A corrosion-proof GRP enclosure that suits salt-laden coastal and offshore atmospheres without paint breakdown.
  • An A4 316 stainless steel guard and borosilicate glass lens supplied as standard for mechanical protection.
  • Field-replaceable UV-stable polycarbonate colour filters in seven colours, plus a user-replaceable xenon tube.
  • SIL1 and SIL2 Route 2H to IEC 61508 (2010) as standard, with an optional diagnostic version for SIL2 Route 1H.
  • Wide operating temperature of −50 to +70 °C and a calculated MTBF of 198.88 years for DC versions to MIL 217.

Industrial Applications

The E2S GNExB2X10 is typically used as the visual element of fire and gas alarm systems on wellsites, gathering stations, gas processing plants, refineries, LNG and LPG facilities, chemical plants and marine installations. Its UL Marine approval and corrosion-proof GRP construction make it a practical choice for offshore platforms and coastal terminals, while the high effective intensity helps in compressor halls and pump houses where background noise means a visual cue is as important as an audible horn. Operators often specify different lens colours for different hazards, for example red for fire and amber or blue for toxic gas, using the E2S GNExB2X10 across the whole site for consistency.

In Oman, these beacons fit projects in the Sohar and Salalah economic zones, the Duqm refinery and petrochemical area, desert oil fields in the interior and desalination and power plants along the coast. Seven Star LLC works with EPC contractors, maintenance teams and end users in Muscat and across the GCC to plan quantities for new builds and shutdown campaigns, and to supply matched spares such as tubes, filters, sunshades and pole mount kits for the E2S GNExB2X10.

About brand
E2S builds one thing: audible and visual warning signals. The company, founded in 1992 and based in London, United Kingdom, makes sounders, beacons, combined units, manual call points and loudspeakers for industrial, marine and hazardous-area sites. Seven Star LLC sources and supplies E2S explosion-protected alarm sounders and xenon beacons for fire and gas systems in Oman, including the GNEx and BEx models shown on this page.

E2S hazardous-area families

E2S groups its Ex signals by family. GNEx and BEx are both for Zone 1 and Zone 21, and the STEx family covers the same zones. D1x and D2x are the lines for Class/Division sites, and the IS family is intrinsically safe for Zone 0. The listed items show the pattern: GNExS1F is an alarm horn sounder, GNExB2X10 a xenon strobe beacon and BExCS110-05 a combined sounder and beacon.

Ordering E2S signals: what we need

An E2S part number is completed by suffixes for supply voltage, lens color, cable entries and options, so send the whole code from the label. For a new requirement give the area classification, gas group and temperature class, voltage, lens color, entry thread, and the approval your project needs. Many GCC projects name IECEx or ATEX in the specification.
