Crowcon Xgard IQ Fixed Gas Detector and Transmitter

Description

A SIL2 fixed gas detector with hot-swap sensor modules

The Crowcon Xgard IQ is an intelligent fixed gas detector and transmitter in a 316 stainless steel enclosure. It separates a universal transmitter from a smart sensor module, so one transmitter gives access to Crowcon flammable (catalytic, infrared and MEMS), toxic, oxygen and H2S sensors. Modules are hot-swappable with the tool provided, without a hot-work permit, and the transmitter auto-configures gas type, range, units and alarm levels when a module is plugged in.

Operators get a bright OLED display, a positive-safety LED (amber, red, green) that shows health from a distance, button control without magnets or tools, an event log, smart bump and speedy bump tests, and calibration-due reminders. The detector is SIL2 certified to IEC 61508 and EN 50402.

Selecting transmitter and sensor module

Select by gas first, then confirm that the sensor operating temperature range fits the site: catalytic methane and propane modules run -40 to +75 C, infrared versions -20 to +55 C, and several toxic modules have narrower ranges, for example HF 5 to 40 C. Choose catalytic or infrared by the poisons and oxygen conditions present. The users can set the full-scale range on the display menu within the sensor options.

Decide on the optional alarm and fault relays, HART and the cable entry type (M20 or NPT). Only the approvals listed for a given sensor apply, so check the FM and ATEX scope against the exact module.

How the Crowcon Xgard IQ works

The Xgard IQ has two parts. The universal transmitter sits in a 316 stainless steel enclosure, and a smart sensor module plugs into it. The module holds the sensor, and the transmitter reads it and converts it to a 4-20 mA signal, Modbus RTU data and optional HART. When a new module is plugged in, the transmitter configures the gas type, range, units and alarm levels by itself. The module can be swapped while the unit is powered, without a hot-work permit.

Where the Crowcon Xgard IQ is used

  • Oil and gas sites
  • Chemical plants
  • Flammable gas detection
  • Toxic gas and oxygen monitoring
  • Hazardous Zone 1 and 2 areas

Selection checklist for the Crowcon Xgard IQ

Installation, commissioning and maintenance notes for the Xgard IQ

Fit the detector at the height that suits the gas, high for light gases and low for heavy gases. Wire the 3-wire 4-20 mA loop, which senses sink or source on its own, and the RS-485 if used. Plug in the sensor module with the supplied tool. Run a smart bump test and calibrate, and follow the calibration due reminder. The event log records alarms, faults and maintenance.

Requesting a quotation for the Crowcon Xgard IQ

Please send the gas, the range, the output, the relay needs, the area details and the quantity. Seven Star LLC serves industrial customers in Oman and the GCC and replies with a quotation based on the information provided.

About brand

Crowcon has made gas detection instruments since 1970 and is based in Abingdon, United Kingdom. The company builds portable detectors worn or carried by workers and fixed detectors and control panels for plant areas, covering flammable gases, toxic gases and oxygen. Seven Star LLC sources and supplies Crowcon portable gas detectors, sensors and accessories for sites in Oman, including the Gas-Pro and Gasman listed on this page.

Crowcon portable detectors listed here

The Gasman is a single-gas personal detector, worn by one person to warn of one hazard such as hydrogen sulfide, carbon monoxide, flammable gas or low oxygen. The Gas-Pro is a multi-gas detector for confined space entry that monitors up to five gases and can be ordered with an internal pump for pre-entry sampling. In both cases the sensor fit is chosen at the time of order.

Ordering Crowcon detectors: what we need

Send the gases and ranges you need, the alarm levels if they differ from the manufacturer's defaults, and for a Gas-Pro if the pumped version is wanted. For spare sensors, send the detector model, serial number and the gas. Add chargers, sampling kits or test accessories to the same inquiry. Contractors in the GCC should state the approval marking their site permit system asks for.
