Crowcon Xgard Bright Fixed Gas Detector

Description

Overview

The Crowcon Xgard Bright is an addressable fixed point gas detector with a built-in display, designed to detect flammable and toxic gases and to monitor oxygen levels in hazardous plant areas. It combines a flameproof enclosure, a bright OLED display and non-intrusive calibration with flexible outputs: 4–20 mA, Modbus RS-485 RTU, optional HART 7 and three relays. The 4-wire addressable implementation of the Crowcon Xgard Bright reduces cabling requirements and lowers installation cost on large projects.

Seven Star LLC supplies the Crowcon Xgard Bright to oil and gas operators, EPC contractors, power and water utilities and industrial plants throughout the Sultanate of Oman and the GCC. Our Muscat engineering team helps select the sensor, enclosure material, cable entry and output options for each tag, and provides engineering support for spares and accessories.

Sensing Principles

Several sensor technologies can be fitted to the Crowcon Xgard Bright. The MPS (Molecular Property Spectrometer) sensor measures flammable gases from 0 to 100% LEL with an expected life of more than ten years. Infrared sensors measure methane, propane, butane, pentane, LPG and carbon dioxide (0–5% by volume), also with a life of more than ten years, and they do not need oxygen to work. Catalytic sensors cover methane, hydrogen, LPG and other hydrocarbons from 0 to 100% LEL. Electrochemical cells measure carbon monoxide in ranges from 0–25 ppm up to 0–2000 ppm, hydrogen sulphide in ranges from 0–10 ppm up to 0–200 ppm, and oxygen from 0 to 25% by volume, including a lead-free long-life oxygen sensor with a five-year life.

Long-life sensors reduce how often cells must be replaced and lower operating expenses over the life of the plant. Repeatability of the Crowcon Xgard Bright is ±2% of full-scale deflection, with zero drift below ±2% FSD per year. Operating temperature for the sensor depends on type, for example -40 to +75 °C for MPS flammable sensing and -40 to +50 °C for H2S, so the right sensor can be matched to ambient conditions.

Engineering Design of the Crowcon Xgard Bright

The enclosure is made from ADC 12 aluminium alloy or 316 stainless steel and is rated IP65/66. In ATEX/IECEx form the aluminium version measures 156 x 166 x 109 mm and weighs about 1 kg, while the stainless steel version measures 165 x 166 x 105 mm and weighs about 3.1 kg. Two cable entries are provided, M20 or ½” NPT, with a stopping plug fitted in the left-side entry. The Crowcon Xgard Bright runs from 10–30 V dc with a maximum consumption of 3 W.

The OLED display of the Crowcon Xgard Bright shows gas levels and units and offers full menus for set-up and diagnostics; in low light it gives higher contrast than a conventional LCD. Zero, calibration, set-up, tests and adjustments are carried out through the display with a magnetic wand, so the housing does not need to be opened, which reduces the need for a hot-work permit. Outputs include 3-wire 4–20 mA (sink or source), RS-485 Modbus RTU and optional HART 7, plus Alarm 1, Alarm 2 and Fault SPDT relays rated 1 A at 24 V dc and a high-side switch to drive a local sounder.

Key Features

Key reasons to specify the Crowcon Xgard Bright on new and brownfield projects:

  • Addressable 4-wire installation over Modbus RS-485 to reduce cabling and installation cost.
  • 4–20 mA, Modbus RTU, optional HART 7 and three on-board relays in one transmitter.
  • Bright OLED display with clear readings and full diagnostic menus.
  • Non-intrusive calibration with a magnetic wand, without opening the enclosure.
  • MPS, infrared, catalytic and electrochemical sensor options for flammable, toxic and oxygen hazards.
  • Long-life MPS and IR sensors of more than ten years and long-life O2 of five years.
  • Aluminium or 316 stainless steel enclosure rated IP65/66.
  • Wide ATEX/IECEx operating range of -40 to +70 °C.

Industrial Applications

The Crowcon Xgard Bright is suited to fixed gas detection on wellhead and manifold areas, gas compression and processing plants, refinery process units, LPG filling and storage facilities, and utility buildings such as battery rooms and boiler houses. In Oman, the stainless steel enclosure is a sensible choice for coastal plants at Sohar, Duqm and Salalah where salt-laden air attacks aluminium, while the aluminium version keeps weight and cost down for inland stations. Addressable Modbus wiring is particularly attractive on large brownfield upgrades, where pulling new multicore cables is expensive.

The Crowcon Xgard Bright sits alongside other fixed devices the site may already use, such as the Honeywell Sensepoint XRL, the Dräger Polytron 7000 or the Simtronics GD10P infrared detector, and it reports to a standard fire and gas controller or PLC. Seven Star LLC supplies the Crowcon Xgard Bright, sensor cartridges, magnetic wands, collector cones and mounting accessories to customers in Muscat and across the GCC, with engineering support.

About brand

Crowcon has made gas detection instruments since 1970 and is based in Abingdon, United Kingdom. The company builds portable detectors worn or carried by workers and fixed detectors and control panels for plant areas, covering flammable gases, toxic gases and oxygen. Seven Star LLC sources and supplies Crowcon portable gas detectors, sensors and accessories for sites in Oman, including the Gas-Pro and Gasman listed on this page.

Crowcon portable detectors listed here

The Gasman is a single-gas personal detector, worn by one person to warn of one hazard such as hydrogen sulfide, carbon monoxide, flammable gas or low oxygen. The Gas-Pro is a multi-gas detector for confined space entry that monitors up to five gases and can be ordered with an internal pump for pre-entry sampling. In both cases the sensor fit is chosen at the time of order.

Ordering Crowcon detectors: what we need

Send the gases and ranges you need, the alarm levels if they differ from the manufacturer's defaults, and for a Gas-Pro if the pumped version is wanted. For spare sensors, send the detector model, serial number and the gas. Add chargers, sampling kits or test accessories to the same inquiry. Contractors in the GCC should state the approval marking their site permit system asks for.
