Brand:

Crowcon Fgard H2 Hydrogen Flame Detector

Description

A flame detector made for hydrogen

Hydrogen burns with an almost invisible flame, and conventional multi-spectrum detectors may not discern it. The Crowcon Fgard H2 is optimised only for hydrogen flame detection. Crowcon quotes a response time of about 4 seconds and detection of a 36 inch hydrogen plume at 40 metres. Heated optics prevent condensation and ice, automatic optical verification checks the lens and electronics, and Crowcon states a 5 year warranty period in its datasheet, and the unit carries Factory Mutual endorsement.

Flame sensitivity

Fuel Fire size Distance
Hydrogen 36 in / 90 cm plume 40 m (131 ft)
Methane 36 in / 90 cm plume 30 m (100 ft)
Methanol 30 x 30 cm 20 m (65 ft)
Methylated spirits 30 x 30 cm 20 m (65 ft)
n-Heptane 30 x 30 cm 12 m (40 ft)

Applications and selection

Listed applications include hydrogen generators and fuelling stations, hydrogen-to-methane production, compressors, refining, gas plants, fertiliser production, semiconductor manufacturing, refrigeration and hydrogen transport. Because the H2 is tuned for hydrogen, its hydrocarbon ranges are shorter than a general hydrocarbon detector: n-heptane is rated at 12 m. For hydrocarbon hazards use the Fgard IR3 or UVIR; for mixed hazards agree the detector mix with your fire and gas designer. More units are listed under flame detectors.

About brand

Crowcon has made gas detection instruments since 1970 and is based in Abingdon, United Kingdom. The company builds portable detectors worn or carried by workers and fixed detectors and control panels for plant areas, covering flammable gases, toxic gases and oxygen. Seven Star LLC sources and supplies Crowcon portable gas detectors, sensors and accessories for sites in Oman, including the Gas-Pro and Gasman listed on this page.

Crowcon portable detectors listed here

The Gasman is a single-gas personal detector, worn by one person to warn of one hazard such as hydrogen sulfide, carbon monoxide, flammable gas or low oxygen. The Gas-Pro is a multi-gas detector for confined space entry that monitors up to five gases and can be ordered with an internal pump for pre-entry sampling. In both cases the sensor fit is chosen at the time of order.

Ordering Crowcon detectors: what we need

Send the gases and ranges you need, the alarm levels if they differ from the manufacturer's defaults, and for a Gas-Pro if the pumped version is wanted. For spare sensors, send the detector model, serial number and the gas. Add chargers, sampling kits or test accessories to the same inquiry. Contractors in the GCC should state the approval marking their site permit system asks for.
