Crowcon T4x Portable 4-Gas Monitor

Description

Overview

The Crowcon T4x is a personal four-gas monitor approved for Zone 0 that protects workers against the four most common gas hazards: carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulphide, flammable gases and oxygen depletion. It builds on the well-known T4 platform and adds long-life oxygen and MPS flammable sensor technologies, giving users regulatory compliance and a low cost of ownership in one simple instrument. With up to 35 hours of battery life when fitted with the MPS sensor – double that of the original T4 – the Crowcon T4x can cover several shifts between charges.

Seven Star LLC supplies the Crowcon T4x in two-, three- and four-gas configurations to oilfield operators, refineries, utilities, construction contractors and industrial plants in the Sultanate of Oman and the wider GCC. We provide engineering support in Muscat for chargers, bump plates and filter accessories, and help buyers choose between pellistor and MPS flammable sensing.

Sensor Technology in the Crowcon T4x

Buyers can choose from three sensor technology options. A dual toxic sensor measures carbon monoxide (0–1000 ppm) and hydrogen sulphide (0–100 ppm) in a single cell, freeing space in the housing. A long-life oxygen sensor (0–25% by volume) reduces how often the oxygen cell needs replacing, while a standard oxygen sensor covers 0–30% by volume. For flammable gas, the Crowcon T4x can use a conventional pellistor or the MPS (Molecular Property Spectrometer) sensor, both reading 0–100% LEL.

The MPS sensor is the key upgrade. According to the manufacturer it carries zero risk of sensor poisoning and can accurately identify more than 15 different flammable gases in one device, so a single calibration covers the mix of hydrocarbons found on many oil and gas sites. Conventional pellistors can lose sensitivity when exposed to contaminants such as silicones, so the MPS version is attractive in areas where such contaminants are present. A carbon monoxide sensor that is immune to hydrogen is also offered for locations where hydrogen could otherwise cause false CO readings.

Engineering Design of the Crowcon T4x

The Crowcon T4x measures 135 x 80 x 35 mm and weighs 282 g. It is durable by design, with an integrated rubber boot fitted as standard, and has been drop tested from 4 m onto concrete. The unit is independently tested to IP65 and IP67. Alarms are audible at 95 dB, visible through bright red and blue LEDs and reinforced by an integrated vibrating alarm. The front-mounted backlit display can flip through 180° so that the wearer can read it easily when the monitor is clipped on the chest.

A rechargeable lithium-ion battery provides up to 35 hours of run time with the MPS sensor and recharges in 5.5 hours. The data logger stores 130 hours of readings at 10-second intervals and up to 3,500 events. An integrated alligator clip with tethering loop and a bump and calibration plate are included; single-unit and ten-unit cradle chargers, a vehicle charger, a clip-on dust filter plate and the I-Test automated bump test and calibration station are available separately. The Crowcon T4x is also compatible with Crowcon Connect.

Operation is deliberately simple. The large single button and intuitive menu system allow the instrument to be switched on, checked and acknowledged while wearing gloves, and new users need only minimal training. The datasheet also notes that toxic and oxygen sensors are not rated for continuous operation above 50 °C, which safety coordinators should consider when instruments are stored in hot vehicles or site cabins, and electromagnetic compatibility follows the EMC Directive 2014/30/EU.

Key Features

Main benefits of the Crowcon T4x for personal protection programmes:

  • Zone 0 approved four-gas protection for CO, H2S, flammable gas and O2.
  • MPS flammable sensor option with no poisoning risk and accurate response to more than 15 flammable gases.
  • Long-life oxygen sensor option that lowers replacement costs.
  • Up to 35 hours of battery life with MPS fitted and a 5.5-hour recharge.
  • Large single button and intuitive menus that work while wearing gloves.
  • Integrated rubber boot, 4 m drop test and IP65/IP67 rating.
  • 180° flip display for easy reading while worn.
  • 130 hours of data logging and 3,500 event records.

Industrial Applications

The Crowcon T4x is a good everyday monitor for operators and maintenance technicians on oil and gas production stations in the interior of Oman, where H2S, hydrocarbons and oxygen depletion are the routine hazards. It is also used by refinery and petrochemical contractors at Sohar and Duqm, by utilities working in water and wastewater networks, and by construction teams entering trenches and basements. The long battery life is useful for crews on extended rotations who may work long shifts away from charging facilities.

For confined space work that needs a pump, the Crowcon T4x can be complemented by the Dräger X-am 8000 or the MSA ALTAIR io4 connected detector, while simple single-gas H2S coverage can come from the Crowcon Gasman single gas detector. Seven Star LLC supplies the Crowcon T4x, cradle chargers, I-Test stations and accessories to customers in Muscat, Salalah and across the GCC, with engineering support.

About brand

Crowcon has made gas detection instruments since 1970 and is based in Abingdon, United Kingdom. The company builds portable detectors worn or carried by workers and fixed detectors and control panels for plant areas, covering flammable gases, toxic gases and oxygen. Seven Star LLC sources and supplies Crowcon portable gas detectors, sensors and accessories for sites in Oman, including the Gas-Pro and Gasman listed on this page.

Crowcon portable detectors listed here

The Gasman is a single-gas personal detector, worn by one person to warn of one hazard such as hydrogen sulfide, carbon monoxide, flammable gas or low oxygen. The Gas-Pro is a multi-gas detector for confined space entry that monitors up to five gases and can be ordered with an internal pump for pre-entry sampling. In both cases the sensor fit is chosen at the time of order.

Ordering Crowcon detectors: what we need

Send the gases and ranges you need, the alarm levels if they differ from the manufacturer's defaults, and for a Gas-Pro if the pumped version is wanted. For spare sensors, send the detector model, serial number and the gas. Add chargers, sampling kits or test accessories to the same inquiry. Contractors in the GCC should state the approval marking their site permit system asks for.
