AMETEK Land Modular Gold Cup Tube Furnace Reference Pyrometer

Description

Modular Gold Cup reference pyrometer for tube furnaces and fired heaters

The AMETEK Land Modular Gold Cup is a portable reference thermometer for measuring tube surface temperature in fired heaters, ethylene crackers, reformers and similar furnaces. A gold-plated hemisphere is held against the tube; it blocks hotter background radiation and traps the tube’s own radiation in a small cavity, so the effective emissivity approaches 1.00. The result is a reading that does not rely on estimating the emissivity of the tube or compensating for furnace walls.

What sets this version apart is its construction. The probe is assembled from sections into the length and shape that suits the furnace, then taken apart again and packed into one industrial case for shipping. The brochure states that the complete system weighs less than 32 kg, so it can be carried on most commercial airlines. Seven Star LLC supplies the Modular Gold Cup in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier in Muscat.

Straight kit and 90/180 kit

The probe is ordered as a kit in one of two forms. The straight kit gives a long, rigid insertion of up to 3.0 m and suits furnaces where there is a clear straight run from the port and room to withdraw the probe in a line. The 90/180 kit contains angled sections, so the hemisphere can be brought to the tube in furnaces where a straight run from the port is not practical. The maximum operating length with the angled kit is 1.8 m.

How the Modular Gold Cup measures

The gold surface is the key component. By holding the hemisphere against the tube, the cavity creates near black-body conditions and the infrared energy from the tube is collected through a small aperture. Because background radiation is excluded and emissivity is close to the theoretical maximum, the two biggest sources of error in non-contact infrared measurement are removed. The thermometer module sends the signal to the hand-held display unit, which shows the temperature on an LCD and is powered by the 9 V battery.

Cooling is by compressed air. Air is connected to the 1/2 in inlet before insertion and kept flowing as the probe enters the furnace; after the reading it continues to cool the probe so that the next reading can be taken sooner. A cooling control panel is offered as an option from the manufacturer.

Selection checklist

  • Kit type. Choose straight or 90/180 according to port position, tube layout and the room available outside the furnace.
  • Air supply. Confirm instrument or plant air at up to 8 bar(g) and at least 1000 l/min at standard conditions; weak supply means slower cooling between readings.
  • Tube diameter. Optional shrouds are available to suit the tube diameter you will measure.
  • Calibration. If your procedure needs a certificate, specify UKAS calibration when ordering.
  • Transport. Because the kit travels in a single case, it works well for contractor teams and multi-site inspection programmes.

Installation, use and care

Assemble the probe on the ground, check the joints, and connect the air before it goes near the port. Insert it through the furnace port so that the hemisphere touches the tube squarely, press the trigger and note the display. Take the reading promptly and withdraw the probe so that it can be cooled; additional cooling after removal shortens the wait before the next tube. Keep the HDU within 0 to 50 °C, and remember that the thermometer module temperature displays only when the trigger is pressed, so check it when working near the upper limit of 55 °C.

After use, dry and inspect the gold surface, disassemble the sections and store them in the case. Keep a spare 9 V battery with the kit. Schedule recalibration with the manufacturer in line with your quality plan.

Typical applications in Oman and the GCC

Refineries, olefin plants and gas-processing sites in the region rely on fired heaters whose tube life depends on accurate metal temperature. The modular design is attractive for service companies and for owners with several furnaces of different geometry, because one case can be shipped between sites such as coastal refineries, desert gas plants and industrial-zone petrochemical units. Results from the probe are normally used to correct the emissivity or offset in the infrared imagers and pyrometers that operators use for daily checks, which supports run-length decisions and helps avoid overfiring.

About brand

AMETEK is the American maker of electronic instruments and electromechanical devices, headquartered in Berwyn, Pennsylvania. It was founded in 1930 as American Machine and Metals. In process industries it is known through brands such as Western Research (sulfur recovery and H2S analysers), Thermox (oxygen analysers), Land (pyrometers), Drexelbrook (RF level) and Chandler Engineering.

Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier in Muscat. We list AMETEK process analysers, pyrometers, portable testers and spare parts, and supply them to gas plants, refineries and power stations in Oman and the GCC.

AMETEK company profile

Established 1930, USA, as American Machine and Metals; later renamed AMETEK
Headquarters Berwyn, Pennsylvania
Structure Two groups: Electronic Instruments (EIG) and Electromechanical (EMG)
Process brands Western Research, Thermox, Land, Drexelbrook, Chandler Engineering, Ranarex

Milestones

  • 1930: American Machine and Metals is formed in March and listed on the New York Stock Exchange as AME.
  • Early 1960s: The company is renamed AMETEK.
  • 2021: AMETEK acquires Magnetrol.

AMETEK products we list

Product Type Typical use
888, 900, 930 Western Research sulfur recovery analysers Tail gas, air demand and H2S in sulfur pits on Claus units
931, 933, 9900RM/WM UV gas analysers H2S in natural gas and multi-component process streams
5000, 3050-OLV, 5100HD, 5100P Moisture analysers Water content in natural gas and process gases; the 5100 models use TDLAS
241CE II, Chanscope II / Model 13 Dew point analysers and testers Hydrocarbon and water dew point of natural gas
WDG 1200/1210, WDG-V, TM2000 Thermox oxygen analysers Combustion control on heaters and boilers, and trace oxygen
SPOT+, Cyclops L Land pyrometers Non-contact temperature of furnaces, kilns, tubes and hot metal
120HD, Ranarex, Drexelbrook RCT-1210 Portable analysers and level Hydrogen purity in generators, gas specific gravity, RF level measurement

Most of these analysers work on light absorption. UV analysers such as the 933 and 9900 measure H2S and SO2 by their absorption bands, and tail gas analysers use this to keep the H2S to SO2 ratio near 2:1 for the best Claus conversion. TDLAS moisture analysers use a tuned laser on a single water line, so they respond fast and do not suffer from the glycol and methanol contamination that affects sensor-based analysers.

Where AMETEK instruments are used

In Oman and the GCC, AMETEK analysers run on gas processing and sulfur recovery units, gas pipelines and custody points, refinery heaters and boilers, power station generators and steel and cement furnaces.
