AMETEK Land LANDCAL Blackbody Calibration Sources

Description

LANDCAL blackbody calibration sources from -10 to 1600 °C

LANDCAL is the AMETEK Land family of six blackbody calibration sources for radiation thermometers, line scanners and thermal imagers. A blackbody source is a heated cavity that behaves very nearly like a perfect emitter, so a pyrometer pointed at it should read the source temperature. Comparing the two shows whether the pyrometer has drifted. Between them the six models cover -10 °C to 1600 °C (15 to 2900 °F), with portable, transportable and bench-mounted formats.

The range is split into primary sources and reference sources. Primary sources contain a certified probe in the radiation cavity for traceability to national standards. Reference sources reach traceability either by comparison with a certified thermometer or by being bought with a calibration certificate. Seven Star LLC supplies LANDCAL in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier in Muscat; please tell us the model you need.

Note from the manufacturer: the temperatures are those measured by the source’s own controller; a pyrometer reading may differ by ±2 %.

LANDCAL low-temperature primary sources: P80P and P550P

The P80P and P550P share a compact case of 315 × 260 × 185 mm and a Eurotherm controller with RS232C serial interface. Both use a blackened aluminium cavity with a 120° cone and an emissivity above 0.995. The P80P suits calibrating thermometers around ambient and below, because it can be run from -10 to 75 °C, heating in about 60 minutes from ambient to 75 °C and cooling from 20 to -10 °C in about 90 minutes depending on ambient. The P550P covers process and building-services duties up to 500 °C recommended with about 60 minutes to reach 500 °C.

LANDCAL high-temperature primary sources: P1200B and P1600B2

The bench-mounted P1200B and P1600B2 are intended for laboratory and workshop calibration of high-temperature pyrometers and line scanners. Both have a silicon carbide cavity with emissivity of 0.998 and a stability of better than ±0.2 °C over 60 minutes once at temperature. The P1200B uses resistance wire heating with a type N control thermocouple and a 3 kVA, 220/240 V or 110/120 V supply. The P1600B2 uses six silicon carbide elements, a type R control thermocouple, a Eurotherm master and over-temperature controller, and 7 kVA from a single-phase or three-phase supply. A measuring thermocouple of type B, R or S can be fitted in either.

LANDCAL reference sources: R1200P and R1500T

The reference sources trade a little accuracy for portability. The R1200P weighs 8.8 kg, runs from a selectable 115 V or 230 V supply and reaches 1150 °C in about 25 minutes, with a 30 mm aperture and uncertainty of ±3 K from 400 to 1100 °C when supplied with a traceable certificate. The R1500T is a transportable unit for 500 to 1500 °C: it heats to 1450 °C in 30 minutes, has a 40 mm aperture, a stability of better than ±1 K over 30 minutes and uncertainty of ±3 K from 400 to 1500 °C with certificate. It weighs 26 kg net and draws 3 kVA.

Selecting the right LANDCAL source

  • Temperature of your pyrometers. Pick the source whose recommended range covers the measurement points you need to check.
  • Primary or reference. Primary sources are best for accredited laboratories; reference sources suit routine site checks and can be bought with a calibration certificate.
  • Location. Bench-mounted P1200B and P1600B2 for a laboratory; P80P, P550P and R1200P for portable use; R1500T when you need 1500 °C on site.
  • Aperture and cavity size. Check that your thermometer’s target spot fits inside the aperture at the working distance.
  • Power. Confirm local mains voltage; the P1600B2 needs 7 kVA, with 2.3 kVA per phase on three-phase supply.
  • Wavelength. Reference-source emissivity is quoted at short wavelengths, so check suitability for long-wave thermometers.

Use and care of LANDCAL sources

Allow each source time to reach and stabilise at the set temperature before comparing readings, and use the manufacturer heating times above as a guide. Keep the aperture clear of dust and scale, avoid touching the cavity, and follow the manufacturer’s cooling procedure before moving a hot unit. Controllers communicate over RS232C so settings can be logged. Calibration of the certified probe or reference thermometer in a primary source should follow your laboratory schedule.

Typical LANDCAL applications in Oman and the GCC

Plants in the region use infrared thermometers on furnaces, kilns, boilers, flares and process lines. Heat, dust and the long intervals between turnarounds mean they can drift. A site calibration lab or instrument workshop with a LANDCAL source can check them in-house and support quality audits, rather than shipping pyrometers abroad.

About brand

AMETEK is the American maker of electronic instruments and electromechanical devices, headquartered in Berwyn, Pennsylvania. It was founded in 1930 as American Machine and Metals. In process industries it is known through brands such as Western Research (sulfur recovery and H2S analysers), Thermox (oxygen analysers), Land (pyrometers), Drexelbrook (RF level) and Chandler Engineering.

Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier in Muscat. We list AMETEK process analysers, pyrometers, portable testers and spare parts, and supply them to gas plants, refineries and power stations in Oman and the GCC.

AMETEK company profile

AMETEK products we list

Product Type Typical use
888, 900, 930 Western Research sulfur recovery analysers Tail gas, air demand and H2S in sulfur pits on Claus units
931, 933, 9900RM/WM UV gas analysers H2S in natural gas and multi-component process streams
5000, 3050-OLV, 5100HD, 5100P Moisture analysers Water content in natural gas and process gases; the 5100 models use TDLAS
241CE II, Chanscope II / Model 13 Dew point analysers and testers Hydrocarbon and water dew point of natural gas
WDG 1200/1210, WDG-V, TM2000 Thermox oxygen analysers Combustion control on heaters and boilers, and trace oxygen
SPOT+, Cyclops L Land pyrometers Non-contact temperature of furnaces, kilns, tubes and hot metal
120HD, Ranarex, Drexelbrook RCT-1210 Portable analysers and level Hydrogen purity in generators, gas specific gravity, RF level measurement

Most of these analysers work on light absorption. UV analysers such as the 933 and 9900 measure H2S and SO2 by their absorption bands, and tail gas analysers use this to keep the H2S to SO2 ratio near 2:1 for the best Claus conversion. TDLAS moisture analysers use a tuned laser on a single water line, so they respond fast and do not suffer from the glycol and methanol contamination that affects sensor-based analysers.

Where AMETEK instruments are used

In Oman and the GCC, AMETEK analysers run on gas processing and sulfur recovery units, gas pipelines and custody points, refinery heaters and boilers, power station generators and steel and cement furnaces.
