SICK AFM60B-S4PA032768 SSI Absolute Encoder, 27 Bit
Description
A multiturn absolute encoder with SSI output and 27-bit resolution
The SICK AFM60B-S4PA032768 is a multiturn absolute encoder that reports a unique position over 4,096 shaft turns, with 32,768 steps per turn. Its synchronous serial interface (SSI) sends the position in Gray code to a controller or drive, so the machine keeps its position after a power loss with no homing run.
The 60 mm face-mount flange, 10 mm shaft and M23 radial connector match the incremental DFS60 of the same family, so the two can be exchanged on a common mounting. Operating temperature extends from -40 to +100 C.

How the SSI interface behaves
The controller sends clock pulses and the encoder shifts out the position word on the data lines. The clock frequency is limited to 2 MHz and the first valid reading is available after 50 ms from power-up. The SET input zeroes the position electronically, and the counting direction can be reversed with the V/R input, so no mechanical adjustment is needed when the encoder is mounted in either direction.
Wiring uses differential data and clock pairs, supply, ground and the two control inputs on a 12-pin M23 connector; unused pins are not assigned. Use shielded cable, since the quoted EMC performance depends on it.
Ordering notes
Absolute position matters most on axes that move while the machine is switched off, such as gates, lifts, rotary tables and positioning slides. With a 12-bit turn count the encoder covers 4,096 revolutions of the shaft, so a gearbox or spindle ratio should be checked against the travel the axis needs. The SSI link is point-to-point, which keeps latency low and makes the signal easy to test with an oscilloscope.
Confirm before ordering: the SSI frame length expected by your controller (this model carries 15 + 12 bits), Gray or binary code, supply voltage, connector style and the mating cable. Other versions of the family, including PROFINET and incremental, are covered in the encoders category; a motor-feedback alternative is the SICK SRS50.

About brand
Machine builders have relied on SICK since 1946 for the sensors that tell a controller where a part, a pallet or a person is. The company, based in Waldkirch, Germany, makes photoelectric, inductive and magnetic sensors, distance sensors and safety devices. Seven Star LLC supplies SICK sensors to maintenance teams and integrators in Oman, mostly as exact replacements identified by type code and part number.
SICK sensor families on this page
Five of the SICK families listed here are described below. The W4 miniature photoelectric sensors include the WTB4-3, a proximity sensor with background suppression. IME is the standard inductive proximity line, and the IME18 is the M18 housing size. RZT7 cylinder sensors fit T-slot pneumatic cylinders and detect the piston magnet. The DT35 belongs to the Dx35 laser distance sensors for mid-range measurement. The microScan3 is a safety laser scanner that guards hazardous zones around machines and vehicles.
Where SICK sensors are used
SICK sensors are fitted on packaging and bottling lines, conveyors, palletizers, warehouse cranes and automated guided vehicles. Safety laser scanners protect robot cells and transfer cars. In process plants, the same proximity and cylinder sensors report valve and damper positions on packaged equipment.
Ordering SICK sensors: what we need
A SICK type code such as IME18-08NPSZW2K packs the whole specification into one string: housing size, sensing range, flush or non-flush mounting, output type and connection. Each variant also has a 7-digit part number, and that number is the safest identifier. Please send:
- Type code and part number from the sensor label, or a photo of it
- Output type (PNP or NPN, normally open or closed) and connection (cable length or M8/M12 plug)
- For microScan3: variant (Core or Pro), interface, protective field range, plus system plug and bracket
We check the code in SICK's documentation and tell you if the manufacturer lists a successor.
