Sizing and installing the ACS880-01-169A-3

Two duty classes apply: light overload at 161 A and 90 kW, heavy duty at 145 A and 75 kW. Maximum output current is 247 A. Choose light overload for variable-torque loads such as pumps and fans, and heavy duty for constant-torque machines with high breakaway torque. Always size from the motor nameplate current at your voltage and check the ambient temperature and altitude against the hardware manual.

Wall space needed for IP21 is 284 mm by 880 mm (cable box included), 365 mm deep, with a weight of 53 kg. The IP55 version for dusty and wet places is 880 x 284 x 423 mm and 54 kg. The drive loses about 2042 W, needs 450 m3/h of cooling air and runs at 67 dB(A).

Braking, filters and options

For braking, the chopper is a selectable internal option, order code +D150. ABB lists the SAFUR125F500 resistor of 4 ohm and 3600 kJ at 90 kW, and a minimum resistance of 3.3 ohm. Order +E202 for a C2 filter, +E200 for C3 or +E201 for IT networks; the standard drive meets C4 on grounded networks. For long cables, submersible pumps or noise reduction, ABB lists the B84143V0162S229 sine filter (153 A, 75 kW).

The ZCU control unit provides 6 digital inputs, 2 digital inputs/outputs, 2 analog inputs, 2 analog outputs, 3 relay outputs, STO and an isolated RS485 port. Three option slots take fieldbus adapters, I/O extensions, feedback modules and a safety functions module.

About brand

ABB is the Swiss-Swedish engineering group for electrification and automation: low voltage drives, motors, circuit breakers and motor control, process instruments and analysers, control systems and robots. It was formed on 5 January 1988 by the merger of two older companies. ASEA was founded in Västerås, Sweden, in 1883 by Ludvig Fredholm to make electric lighting and generators. BBC Brown Boveri was founded in Baden near Zurich in 1891 by Charles E. L. Brown and Walter Boveri. ABB Ltd is incorporated in Switzerland, headquartered in Zurich and listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange and Nasdaq Stockholm.

Choosing an ABB drive

ABB's ACS drive codes are easy to read once you know the pattern. In ACS580-01-046A-4, "ACS580" is the drive family, "01" means a wall-mounted single drive, "046A" is the rated output current (about 46 A) and "-4" means a 380–480 V supply. The family is chosen by application: ACS355 for compact machinery, ACS310 for simple pumps and fans, ACS580 as the general-purpose drive, ACQ580 for water and wastewater with pump functions such as pipe fill and dry-run protection, and ACS880 for heavy industrial duty with direct torque control. Size the drive on the motor's full-load current, not only its kW rating, and allow derating for the high ambient temperatures common in Gulf electrical rooms.

Where ABB products are used

In Oman and the GCC, ABB drives and motors run pumps, fans and compressors in water and wastewater plants, district cooling, oil and gas and industry. ABB flowmeters, level instruments and analysers are used in water utilities, power and desalination plants and refineries, and SACE breakers protect switchboards in buildings and plants.
