ABB ACS180 Machinery Drive 0.75-2.2 kW, 3-Phase 380-480 V
Overview
The ABB ACS180 is a compact, general machinery variable speed drive from ABB for controlling asynchronous induction motors and permanent magnet synchronous motors. It is designed for cabinet installation and covers 0.25 to 22 kW across 120 V single-phase, 230 V single-phase and three-phase, and 380 to 480 V three-phase supplies. This page focuses on the 0.75 to 2.2 kW ratings for 3-phase 380 to 480 V networks, the sizes most often used on small pumps, fans, conveyors and packaging machines. In these ratings the drive is built in the R0 frame without a fan for 0.75 and 1.1 kW, and in the fan-cooled R1 frame for 1.5 and 2.2 kW, all only 70 mm wide.
Seven Star LLC supplies the ABB ACS180 and its accessories to OEMs, panel builders, maintenance teams and contractors in Muscat, across the Sultanate of Oman and the GCC. On the 400 and 415 V, 50 Hz networks used in the region, the 380 to 480 V types are the natural choice for small three-phase motors. We provide engineering support in Muscat for drive selection and replacement.
Operating Principle
As general engineering background, a voltage source frequency converter rectifies the incoming AC supply into a DC link and then uses IGBT switching to synthesise a variable voltage, variable frequency output for the motor. The ABB hardware manual for the ABB ACS180 shows exactly this main circuit: a rectifier, a DC link with capacitors and an inverter, with a brake chopper and DC connection only on the larger R2 to R4 frames. Because motor speed follows supply frequency, varying the output frequency lets the drive control speed and torque, so pumps and fans can run at the speed the process needs rather than throttling flow at full speed.
The ABB ACS180 output frequency range is 0 to 599 Hz with 0.01 Hz resolution, and the switching frequency can be set to 4, 8 or 12 kHz. The input stage operates on 380 to 480 V three-phase, −15% to +10%, at 47 to 63 Hz, and the fundamental power factor is 0.98 at nominal load. Light-duty and heavy-duty ratings are published so the ABB ACS180 can be sized for variable torque loads such as fans or constant torque loads such as conveyors.
Engineering Design of the ABB ACS180
The ABB ACS180 comes in two primary variants. The standard ACS180-04S has integrated Safe torque off and, for the 380 to 480 V types, a category C3 internal EMC filter; the base ACS180-04N has C4 EMC level with no internal filter and no STO. Both are IP20 modules (UL open type) for mounting inside a cabinet, with screw or DIN rail mounting on frames R0 to R2. Frame R0 has natural convection cooling and must be installed vertically; frame R1 has a cooling fan and can be tilted up to 90 degrees. R0 measures 174 mm high at the back, 70 mm wide and 143 mm deep and weighs 0.92 kg, while R1 is 190 mm high, 70 mm wide, 143 mm deep and 1.24 kg.
The front of each ABB ACS180 has a control panel with display and status LED, a panel and PC tool port (RJ45), fixed control terminals and power terminals for supply and motor. The control interface includes two analog inputs for 0 to 10 V or 0 to 20 mA, one analog output, four digital inputs that accept PNP or NPN signals (DI3 and DI4 can act as frequency inputs from 10 Hz to 16 kHz), one transistor digital output, one form C relay output rated 250 V AC or 30 V DC at 2 A, a 24 V DC auxiliary output and a 10 V reference for a potentiometer. Built-in EIA-485 Modbus RTU allows connection to a PLC or SCADA system without an option module.
Key Features
Key features of the ABB ACS180 in the 0.75 to 2.2 kW, 380 to 480 V ratings, taken from the ABB hardware manual, are:
- Control of asynchronous induction motors and permanent magnet synchronous motors.
- Compact 70 mm wide R0 and R1 frames, with R0 types cooled by natural convection.
- Integrated Safe torque off and C3 EMC filter in the ACS180-04S standard variant.
- Built-in Modbus RTU over EIA-485 for integration with control systems.
- Output frequency from 0 to 599 Hz and selectable 4, 8 or 12 kHz switching frequency.
- Light-duty and heavy-duty ratings for variable torque and constant torque applications.
- Operation at up to 50 °C at heavy-duty rating without derating, with R1 usable to 60 °C with derating.
- Rated conditional short-circuit current of 65 kA when protected by the fuses given in the manual.
Industrial Applications
ABB positions the ACS180 for machinery applications such as pumps, fans, compressors, conveyors, winders and mixers. In the 0.75 to 2.2 kW range typical uses include booster and dosing pumps, small ventilation and exhaust fans, cooling fans on process equipment, belt conveyors in warehouses and food plants, packaging and labelling machines, mixers and small air compressors. The heavy-duty rating suits loads with high starting torque, while the light-duty rating gives extra current for pumps and fans. The ABB ACS180 is often built into OEM control panels because of its narrow width and side-by-side mounting on R1.
In Oman and the GCC the ABB ACS180 is used by panel builders in Muscat and Sohar, in water treatment and desalination packages, HVAC ventilation, food processing, and utility systems on oil and gas sites where small motors need soft starting and speed control. Hot plant rooms and outdoor shelters are common in the region, so the cabinet design should respect the ambient limits and free space requirements of the manual. Seven Star LLC supplies the ABB ACS180 drive with matching motors, line chokes and EMC filters, and supports engineers choosing between the 04S and 04N variants.
