ABB ACS880-01-017A-3 Wall-Mounted Drive 7.5 kW 17 A

Description

Where the ACS880-01-017A-3 fits

In the ACS880-01 range the ACS880-01-017A-3 is the type that ABB rates for 7.5 kW at 400 V. Nominal output is 17 A at 7.5 kW and the mechanical size is frame R2. It is a natural choice for conveyor and hoist applications, or for mid-size pumps and compressors. The ACS880 platform brings direct torque control, built-in Safe Torque Off and a choke for harmonic filtering, so a cabinet needs little else around the power part.

Duty classes, enclosure and heat loss

Two duty classes apply: light overload at 16 A and 7.5 kW, heavy duty at 12.6 A and 5.5 kW. Maximum output current is 21 A. Choose light overload for variable-torque loads such as pumps and fans, and heavy duty for constant-torque machines with high breakaway torque. Match the motor current and check ambient temperature and altitude derating in the manual.

Wall space needed for IP21 is 155 mm by 409 mm (cable box included), 249 mm deep, with a weight of 8.4 kg. IP55 enclosures are larger, 450 x 162 x 315 mm at 9.5 kg. The drive loses about 235 W, needs 88 m3/h of cooling air and runs at 59 dB(A).

Options that change the order

For braking, the chopper is built in as standard (frames R1 to R4). ABB lists the SACE08RE44 resistor of 44 ohm and 210 kJ at 7.5 kW, and a minimum resistance of 39 ohm. EMC filters are options: +E202 for category C2 on a grounded network, +E200 for C3 and +E201 for an ungrounded network; category C4 is standard on 380 to 500 V drives. A sine filter, type B84143V0025R229, is listed for 16 A at 7.5 kW and is useful with long motor cables or submersible pumps.

Control connections include 2 analog inputs, 2 analog outputs, 6 digital inputs, 2 configurable digital inputs/outputs, 3 relay outputs, Safe Torque Off and an EIA-485 link that serves as Modbus RTU or drive-to-drive link. Fieldbus adapters, extra I/O, encoder interfaces and safety modules fit into the three option slots.

About brand

ABB is the Swiss-Swedish engineering group for electrification and automation: low voltage drives, motors, circuit breakers and motor control, process instruments and analysers, control systems and robots. It was formed on 5 January 1988 by the merger of two older companies. ASEA was founded in Västerås, Sweden, in 1883 by Ludvig Fredholm to make electric lighting and generators. BBC Brown Boveri was founded in Baden near Zurich in 1891 by Charles E. L. Brown and Walter Boveri. ABB Ltd is incorporated in Switzerland, headquartered in Zurich and listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange and Nasdaq Stockholm.

Choosing an ABB drive

ABB's ACS drive codes are easy to read once you know the pattern. In ACS580-01-046A-4, "ACS580" is the drive family, "01" means a wall-mounted single drive, "046A" is the rated output current (about 46 A) and "-4" means a 380–480 V supply. The family is chosen by application: ACS355 for compact machinery, ACS310 for simple pumps and fans, ACS580 as the general-purpose drive, ACQ580 for water and wastewater with pump functions such as pipe fill and dry-run protection, and ACS880 for heavy industrial duty with direct torque control. Size the drive on the motor's full-load current, not only its kW rating, and allow derating for the high ambient temperatures common in Gulf electrical rooms.

Where ABB products are used

In Oman and the GCC, ABB drives and motors run pumps, fans and compressors in water and wastewater plants, district cooling, oil and gas and industry. ABB flowmeters, level instruments and analysers are used in water utilities, power and desalination plants and refineries, and SACE breakers protect switchboards in buildings and plants.
