ABB ACS580-01-430A-4 ACS580 250 kW Frame R9 AC Drive
Description
ABB ACS580-01-430A-4: 250 kW ACS580 drive in frame R9
The ABB ACS580-01-430A-4 is a 250 kW ACS580-01 general purpose drive in frame R9. ABB rates it at 430 A nominal output on a 380 to 415 V supply, with 400 A for light duty and 363 A for heavy duty.
The ACS580 series targets pumps, fans, conveyors and mixers where simple installation and commissioning matter. A built-in choke, an internal C2 EMC filter and Safe torque off are standard.

Selecting the right duty rating
For heavy-duty operation the drive provides 363 A (200 kW) at 150% overload for one minute in ten (125% for this R9 type, as footnoted by ABB); light duty is 400 A (200 kW) at 110%. The maximum output current is 545 A for two seconds at start.
Mount the 97 kg drive on a wall with 380 mm of width and 955 mm of height; frame R9 needs 1150 m3/h of cooling air and dissipates about 6000 W at 68 dB(A). Input protection is a 630 A OFAF3H630 gG fuse or a 700 A 170M5813 aR fuse; UL installations use JJS-600. The IEC copper cable specification is 2×(3×150+70) mm2.
Free space for vertical mounting of frame R1 is 30 mm above, 200 mm below and 150 mm on each side; drives can also sit side by side, and ABB allows horizontal mounting for frames R0 to R3.
Reading the ACS580-01-430A-4 order code
In the type code, ACS580 is the series, 01 the wall-mounted construction, 430A the size and 4 the 400/480 V range. Plus codes add options: +B056 for IP55, +J400 or +J429 for panel variants, +C135 for a flange mounting kit and fieldbus codes such as +K454 (FPBA-01), +K457 (FCAN-01) and +K475 (FENA-21).
Checking a replacement or spare? Compare the printed type code on the drive with the code on this page, character by character, and add the plus codes of the options fitted. The ACS580 uses the same control panel across sizes, but power parts, fuses and cabling differ by frame, so always match the full code.
Engineering a large drive into the electrical room
At this power level the drive is rarely a simple swap item; it is a significant part of the motor control centre or electrical room design. The heat it releases at full load has to be removed by the room ventilation or air conditioning, and the cooling air the frame needs must actually reach its intake rather than recirculate from its own exhaust. When several large drives share one room, their losses add up quickly, so the HVAC design should be checked against the combined figure before the drives are energised.
Weight and handling also matter. A drive of this mass needs a wall or frame that can carry it safely, and lifting equipment should be planned for installation and any later replacement. Cable entry deserves early attention too, because parallel power cables of the size listed above need bending space, proper glands and secure support.
Integration with plant automation
Large pump and fan drives are usually controlled from a PLC, DCS or building management system. The plus codes listed in the order code allow a fieldbus adapter to be fitted for that link, while hard-wired start, stop and speed reference signals remain a simple alternative. Safe torque off, which is standard on this series, can be tied into the machine or process safety circuit after a proper risk assessment, with validation of the complete safety function at commissioning.
Installation and commissioning practice
Before power is applied, the insulation of motor and cables should be tested with the drive disconnected, all power terminals tightened to the manual’s values, and the protective earth connections checked. Fuses must match the types given in the specifications so that the drive and cabling are protected as ABB intends. Shielded or symmetrical motor cables with correct bonding at both ends help the internal EMC filter and reduce bearing current risks on large motors.
Commissioning then follows the assistant control panel: motor data entry, an identification run where the load allows it, direction check, ramp and limit setting, and the control interface. For pumps and fans, the drive’s speed range should be set to keep the machine within its own safe operating limits. A parameter backup stored with the plant documentation completes the job.
Operation and maintenance in GCC conditions
Electrical rooms and pump stations in Oman and the Gulf can face high outside temperatures, fine dust and humid coastal air, and air-conditioning failures in summer are a real risk for large drives. The ambient range and altitude derating in the table should be applied with margin, and room temperature alarms are a sensible precaution. The IP55 option suits dustier locations better than IP21, while coated boards add some resistance to humidity and contaminants.
Routine maintenance should include cleaning the air path and heat sink, checking cooling fans, inspecting terminals and cables for heating, and reviewing the fault and warning logs. Inspections before and after the hot season help catch dust build-up and fan wear before they cause trips.

About brand
ABB, formed in 1988 and headquartered in Zurich, covers an unusually long stretch of a plant's equipment list, from the flowmeter and analyzer in the field to the drive, breaker and protection relay in the electrical room.
Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier serving Oman and the GCC. Our ABB listing concentrates on measurement and analytics: ABB flowmeters, liquid analysis sensors and systems, level and pressure instruments. It also includes valve actuators, low voltage circuit breakers, ABB drives, soft starters and protection relays.
ABB product families on this page
Flow measurement includes ABB electromagnetic, Coriolis, vortex and swirl meters, sold under names such as ProcessMaster, AquaMaster, CoriolisMaster and SwirlMaster. Liquid analysis covers pH, conductivity and dissolved oxygen sensors with their transmitters. SensyTemp TSP sensors handle temperature. On the electrical side the listing has ACS355 machinery drives, the ACS550 general purpose drive, the ACQ580 for water and wastewater and the ACS880-01 industrial drive, with fieldbus adapters such as the FPBA-01 for PROFIBUS DP. Protection and switching products include SACE Tmax XT molded case breakers, SACE Emax 2 air circuit breakers, PSR soft starters and the REM615 and RET615 relays.
Where ABB instruments and drives are used
Water and wastewater plants use the electromagnetic flowmeters, analyzers and ACQ580 drives together. Oil and gas, power and chemical plants specify the Coriolis and vortex meters, pressure and level transmitters and the 615 series relays for motor and transformer feeders. The drives run pumps, fans, conveyors and compressors in almost every industry.
Ordering ABB parts: what we need
For drives send the full type code from the rating label, for example ACS355-03E-05A6-4, plus the serial number if it is a replacement. For instruments send the complete order code, measuring span, process connection, wetted materials, output or protocol and the hazardous area approval. For breakers give frame size, rated current, breaking capacity, number of poles, trip unit and fixed or withdrawable version.
