Description
ACS480-04-050A-4: 50 A in a compact IP20 module
ACS480-04-050A-4 is an ABB ACS480 general purpose drive in module construction for three-phase 380 to 480 V supplies. The hardware manual lists 22 kW at 50 A nominal output on frame R4, a body 262 mm wide, 240 mm high and 213 mm deep that weighs 5.6 kg in IP20 form. At 22 kW and 50 A it is the top rating of the ACS480 range.
Hardware included in the standard unit: support for induction, permanent magnet and ABB SynRM motors, a cold configuration adapter connection for CCA-01, a front option slot and a side option slot and a standard ACS-AP-S assistant control panel. Other ratings are in AC drives and the general purpose range is introduced on the ABB ACS580 overview.

Ratings and overload of the ACS480-04-050A-4
Match 48 A (light duty, 22 kW) or 45 A (heavy duty, 22 kW) to the motor. The nominal figure is 50 A for 22 kW and the peak is 81 A. Mains current: 55.7 A without a choke, 50 A with one.
The hardware manual recommends 100 A gG fuses (OFAF000H100) or 160 A gR fuses (170M2702), or the S 803S-B 100 breaker. Expect 672 W of losses at 90% of motor nominal frequency and full current, 150 m3/h of cooling air and 69 dB(A).
Hot or high-altitude sites need derating: 0.66 at 8 kHz, 0.49 at 12 kHz, 2% per degree from +50 to +60 degrees C and 1% per 100 m above 1000 m. At the default 4 kHz no switching derating is required.
Dimensions of frame R4: IP20 height 240 mm (back height 205 mm), width 262 mm, depth 213 mm, 5.6 kg. With the UL Type 1 kit the height becomes 391 mm and the weight 6.9 kg. Allow 75 mm free space above and below. The maximum motor cable is 100 m without EMC limits; for EMC compliance ABB lists 30 m for category C3 and 10 m for C2 with the internal filter, or 30 m for C1, C2 and C3 with the optional external filter.
Decoding the ordering code
The designation splits into series ACS480, construction 04 (module), rating 050A and voltage code 4. The plain code gives the standard unit; plus codes ABB lists include K469 for FECA-01 EtherCAT, K470 for FEPL-02 POWERLINK, K475 for FENA-21 Ethernet and K491 for FMBT-21 Modbus/TCP.
Additional facts: natural convection on R0 and a cooling fan on R1 to R4, a choice of an IEC type or a UL (NEC) type for North America, an input frequency of 47 to 63 Hz and an output frequency of 0 to 500 Hz.
Documentation and quotation
The reference for the numbers above is ABB’s ACS480 hardware manual 3AXD50000047392 (revision F), available from the document link. To request the ACS480-04-050A-4, give Seven Star LLC the motor data and supply details; availability and lead time are answered in the quotation.
Before ordering, check the full code with options, the motor current, the EMC category you need and any newer ABB revision of the manual.

About brand
ABB is the Swiss-Swedish engineering group for electrification and automation: low voltage drives, motors, circuit breakers and motor control, process instruments and analysers, control systems and robots. It was formed on 5 January 1988 by the merger of two older companies. ASEA was founded in Västerås, Sweden, in 1883 by Ludvig Fredholm to make electric lighting and generators. BBC Brown Boveri was founded in Baden near Zurich in 1891 by Charles E. L. Brown and Walter Boveri. ABB Ltd is incorporated in Switzerland, headquartered in Zurich and listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange and Nasdaq Stockholm.

Choosing an ABB drive
ABB's ACS drive codes are easy to read once you know the pattern. In ACS580-01-046A-4, "ACS580" is the drive family, "01" means a wall-mounted single drive, "046A" is the rated output current (about 46 A) and "-4" means a 380–480 V supply. The family is chosen by application: ACS355 for compact machinery, ACS310 for simple pumps and fans, ACS580 as the general-purpose drive, ACQ580 for water and wastewater with pump functions such as pipe fill and dry-run protection, and ACS880 for heavy industrial duty with direct torque control. Size the drive on the motor's full-load current, not only its kW rating, and allow derating for the high ambient temperatures common in Gulf electrical rooms.
Where ABB products are used
In Oman and the GCC, ABB drives and motors run pumps, fans and compressors in water and wastewater plants, district cooling, oil and gas and industry. ABB flowmeters, level instruments and analysers are used in water utilities, power and desalination plants and refineries, and SACE breakers protect switchboards in buildings and plants.
