ABB ACS550-01-08A8-4 ACS550 4 kW Frame R1 AC Drive
Description
ABB ACS550-01-08A8-4 general purpose drive, frame R1
ABB ACS550-01-08A8-4 belongs to ABB’s ACS550 standard drive family, a long-serving range for pumps, fans and conveyors. This type is a 4 kW, 8.8 A unit in frame R1, intended for 380 to 480 V networks.
Typical applications are pumps, fans and constant-torque machines such as conveyors, where adjustable speed and simple commissioning matter more than special product engineering.

Reading the ratings for the R1 frame
In IP21 form the frame R1 body measures 125 x 369 x 212 mm with the cable connection box, or 330 mm high without it. Mass is 6.5 kg; the +B055 IP54 unit is 461 mm high and 8 kg.
Heat load is 127 W with 44 m3/h of cooling air flow and 52 dB of noise. Input fuses: 10 A gG, or 15 A UL class T. A brake chopper is built into this frame (ABB lists it as built in up to 11 kW), so a resistor can be wired directly.
ABB specifies operation from -15 C (no frost) to 40 C at the default switching frequency, or to 50 C with output current and power derated to 90%. Altitude up to 1000 m needs no derating; above that, derate 1% per 100 m up to 2000 m. Leave 200 mm free above and below, and nothing at the sides.
ABB gives two ratings for this type. Normal use is 8.8 A, 4 kW (5 hp in NEMA terms). Heavy-duty use is 6.9 A, 3 kW, which suits loads that need more overload; the manual advises that the motor nominal current lie between 0.2 and 2.0 times the heavy-duty current.
ACS550 drives carry a swinging choke that ABB says reduces harmonics, coated circuit boards for harsh environments and an internal category C2 filter, so no external filter is needed for first-environment limits.
Reading the ACS550-01-08A8-4 order code
Plus codes extend ACS550-01-08A8-4: +B055 gives IP54 (UL type 12), +J404 swaps the assistant panel for the basic one, and +K454 or +K466 add PROFIBUS DP or Ethernet. Always include these on the quotation request so the right variant is matched.
If this drive is a replacement in an existing panel, measure the mounting holes and the free height as well as the power. Frame size decides the fixing points, cable entry and cooling clearance, so checking them first avoids rework at installation. Quote us the motor current and supply voltage so the rating can be matched.
Installing the ACS550 R1 drive in a panel or on a wall
Mount the drive vertically on a flat, non-combustible surface and respect the free space above and below so that cooling air can pass through the drive without being drawn back in. When several drives share one cabinet, size the cabinet ventilation for the combined heat load rather than for a single unit, and avoid placing one drive directly in the exhaust air of another. Use the input fuses listed by ABB, a correctly sized motor cable, and a symmetrical shielded motor cable where the EMC category depends on it. Keep control and fieldbus cables in separate trunking from motor cables and cross them at right angles where they must meet.
Commissioning the drive with the motor
Before the first start, check the supply voltage, enter the motor nameplate data, and confirm that the chosen rating, normal use or heavy duty, matches the load. Choose the application macro that is closest to the plant control philosophy, then adapt start, stop and reference sources. Run the motor uncoupled where possible to confirm rotation direction, and only then couple it to the pump, fan or conveyor and tune acceleration and deceleration ramps. Where a brake resistor is connected to the built-in chopper, confirm that the related parameters are enabled and that the resistor is installed where its heat cannot damage cables or nearby equipment. If the drive is controlled over Modbus, test communication loss behaviour so that the motor reacts safely when the link drops.
Keeping a copy of the settings
Record the final parameter list and keep it with the panel documents. A clear record shortens restart time when the drive is replaced or when a technician needs to compare current settings with the original commissioning values.
Maintenance and operating environment in Oman and the GCC
ABB rates this drive to 40 °C at the default switching frequency and up to 50 °C with derating, and plant rooms in Oman and neighbouring Gulf countries can approach or exceed these values in summer. Place the drive in a ventilated or air-conditioned room where possible, keep it out of direct sun, and take derating into account early in the selection rather than after commissioning. Fine dust and sand reduce the cooling air flow over time, so include cleaning of air paths and cabinet filters in the preventive maintenance plan, with the frequency based on how dusty the site is. Coastal sites with humid, salty air call for closed cabinets, sealed cable entries and regular checks of terminal tightness and corrosion. Where the standard IP21 enclosure is not suitable for the location, the IP54 option listed above is the type to ask about when requesting a quotation.
Checks before ordering a replacement
Compare the motor current and duty with both ABB ratings, confirm the network voltage, and note any fieldbus or control panel requirement so the plus codes on the request reflect what is installed today.
Documents and quotation
Values come from the ABB ACS550-01 user’s manual and the ABB ACS550 catalogue attached to this page; the abb.com product record confirms the type code. See the ACS550 series page and AC Drives for related sizes.
Confirm frame, enclosure, panel and fieldbus needs first. Seven Star LLC supplies as an independent business in Muscat; stock position is given at quotation.

About brand
ABB, formed in 1988 and headquartered in Zurich, covers an unusually long stretch of a plant's equipment list, from the flowmeter and analyzer in the field to the drive, breaker and protection relay in the electrical room.
Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier serving Oman and the GCC. Our ABB listing concentrates on measurement and analytics: ABB flowmeters, liquid analysis sensors and systems, level and pressure instruments. It also includes valve actuators, low voltage circuit breakers, ABB drives, soft starters and protection relays.
ABB product families on this page
Flow measurement includes ABB electromagnetic, Coriolis, vortex and swirl meters, sold under names such as ProcessMaster, AquaMaster, CoriolisMaster and SwirlMaster. Liquid analysis covers pH, conductivity and dissolved oxygen sensors with their transmitters. SensyTemp TSP sensors handle temperature. On the electrical side the listing has ACS355 machinery drives, the ACS550 general purpose drive, the ACQ580 for water and wastewater and the ACS880-01 industrial drive, with fieldbus adapters such as the FPBA-01 for PROFIBUS DP. Protection and switching products include SACE Tmax XT molded case breakers, SACE Emax 2 air circuit breakers, PSR soft starters and the REM615 and RET615 relays.
Where ABB instruments and drives are used
Water and wastewater plants use the electromagnetic flowmeters, analyzers and ACQ580 drives together. Oil and gas, power and chemical plants specify the Coriolis and vortex meters, pressure and level transmitters and the 615 series relays for motor and transformer feeders. The drives run pumps, fans, conveyors and compressors in almost every industry.
Ordering ABB parts: what we need
For drives send the full type code from the rating label, for example ACS355-03E-05A6-4, plus the serial number if it is a replacement. For instruments send the complete order code, measuring span, process connection, wetted materials, output or protocol and the hazardous area approval. For breakers give frame size, rated current, breaking capacity, number of poles, trip unit and fixed or withdrawable version.
