ABB ACS380-040S-09A4-4 Machinery Drive 4 kW 9.4 A
Description
A 4 kW module on a 400 V supply
Among the ACS380 machinery drives, the ACS380-040S-09A4-4 is a module for 3-phase 380 to 480 V input. Frame R1 houses the 9.4 A, 4 kW power stage. Think of conveyors, mixers, fans and small pumps. You order it as the standard variant (I/O and Modbus, BMIO-01 module fitted); the filter is the low filtering level (C3 filter on 400 V, no internal filter on 230 V).

Choosing between light and heavy duty
Pick the current by load type: 7.6 A light-overload, 4.8 A heavy duty, 8.6 A maximum. Light-overload use allows 110% of the current for one minute in ten, heavy duty 150%, both at 50 degrees C. UL rating on the ABB page: 5 Hp, 7.6 A at 480 V. Always size from the nameplate current at your supply voltage.
For the supply side ABB lists IEC fuses of 16 A (gG) or 40 A (gR), and UL class T fuses of 20 A. The UL input current is 12.2 A, and the Type E manual motor protector named is MS165-16. Heat loss is 139 W (476 BTU/h); note that air flow 57 m3/h (33 ft3/min), maximum sound level 63 dBA.
A brake chopper is built in as standard. Choose a resistor between 53 and 102 ohm; the rating is 3 Hp continuous and 6 kW maximum. Flux braking is also available without a resistor, and mechanical brake control is part of the firmware.
Reading the ordering code
In ACS380-040S-09A4-4, the 04 means module construction, digit 0 chooses the filter, letter S selects the connectivity variant, 09A4 is the size and 4 the supply. Three connectivity letters exist: S (BMIO-01 I/O and Modbus), N (base, no module) and C (configured). Only the configured variant accepts plus codes, for example +K454 for FPBA-01 PROFIBUS DP, +K457 for FCAN-01 CANopen, +K469 for FECA-01 EtherCAT.
Mount it where the air stays between -10 and +50 degrees C (derated to 60 on R1 to R4) and non-condensing. Above 1000 m the current must be derated, up to 4000 m (400 V) or 2000 m (230 V). The standard motor cable limit is 150 m, longer with an output choke.

Documentation and ordering
Ratings, fuses, dissipation and braking values were read from ABB’s ACS380 catalogue (US edition, Rev E) together with the ABB product page. Seven Star LLC supplies the ACS380-040S-09A4-4 on request from Muscat; availability and lead time are stated in the quotation.
Before ordering, check the exact code, option codes, motor current, braking duty and site conditions. The catalogue is a US edition, so cross-check IEC values against ABB hardware manual 3AXD50000029274. Other ratings are listed in AC drives, and the wall-mounted general purpose sibling is on the ABB ACS580 page.

About brand
ABB is the Swiss-Swedish engineering group for electrification and automation: low voltage drives, motors, circuit breakers and motor control, process instruments and analysers, control systems and robots. It was formed on 5 January 1988 by the merger of two older companies. ASEA was founded in Västerås, Sweden, in 1883 by Ludvig Fredholm to make electric lighting and generators. BBC Brown Boveri was founded in Baden near Zurich in 1891 by Charles E. L. Brown and Walter Boveri. ABB Ltd is incorporated in Switzerland, headquartered in Zurich and listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange and Nasdaq Stockholm.

Choosing an ABB drive
ABB's ACS drive codes are easy to read once you know the pattern. In ACS580-01-046A-4, "ACS580" is the drive family, "01" means a wall-mounted single drive, "046A" is the rated output current (about 46 A) and "-4" means a 380–480 V supply. The family is chosen by application: ACS355 for compact machinery, ACS310 for simple pumps and fans, ACS580 as the general-purpose drive, ACQ580 for water and wastewater with pump functions such as pipe fill and dry-run protection, and ACS880 for heavy industrial duty with direct torque control. Size the drive on the motor's full-load current, not only its kW rating, and allow derating for the high ambient temperatures common in Gulf electrical rooms.
Where ABB products are used
In Oman and the GCC, ABB drives and motors run pumps, fans and compressors in water and wastewater plants, district cooling, oil and gas and industry. ABB flowmeters, level instruments and analysers are used in water utilities, power and desalination plants and refineries, and SACE breakers protect switchboards in buildings and plants.

Ordering ABB products: what we need
Send the full type code from the nameplate (for example ACS580-01-046A-4 or 266DSH...) and, for spare parts, the ABB ID number (such as 3BSE008508R1 or 1SBL176001R3010). For drives, add the motor power and current and any option codes (+...). For instruments, send the complete order code, which sets range, materials and approvals. Baldor motors are listed on their own brand page.
