Overview

The ABB Contrac LME620-AI/-AN is an electric linear actuator engineered for precise, stall-proof positioning in industrial process control valves and dampers. Delivering 4 kN (900 lbf) of rated thrust with an adjustable stroke, the LME620 replaces pneumatic actuation on control loops where electric power is more practical to route than instrument air, without sacrificing positioning accuracy.

Operating Principle

The LME620 converts electric motor rotation into linear thrust through an internal drive mechanism, positioning a valve stem or damper linkage in direct response to a control signal from the electronic unit. Its stall-proof design, rated S9-100% duty per IEC 60034-1/EN 60034-1, allows the actuator to hold position against process forces indefinitely without overheating or requiring thermal derating — a key requirement for continuous modulating control service.

Engineering Design of the ABB Contrac LME620

The LME620 delivers a rated force of 4 kN (900 lbf), adjustable to 50%, 75%, or 100% of rated output to match the actual valve or damper load. Stroke length is configurable from a minimum of 0–12mm up to a maximum of 0–60mm, with a standard operating speed of 2mm/s, adjustable between 0.1 and 2.0mm/s to match process response requirements. The actuator is powered by 115VAC (94–130V) or 230VAC (190–260V) single-phase supply at 47.5–63Hz, and its housing is rated IP66 and NEMA 4X for protection against dust, washdown, and outdoor exposure.
