A compact capacitive point level switch with IO-Link and a colour status display

The JUMO ZELOS C01 LS (type 408401) detects the point level of solid and liquid media for overfill and dry-run protection, and can also detect media in separation and cleaning processes. A PEEK-tipped capacitive probe sits in a 60 g stainless-steel body, and the colour status ring follows NAMUR NE107, IO-Link or customer-specific colours. It runs in IO-Link mode or in standard IO mode with two outputs (PNP, NPN or push-pull), and the datasheet lists CIP/SIP suitability, up to 60 bar process pressure, and approvals including shipbuilding, WHG overfill protection, EHEDG/3A hygienic connections and intrinsically safe Ex i versions. Railway use to EN 50155 vibration category 1B is listed among the areas of application.

Ordering and stock versions

The code is 408401/ extension – electrical connection – process connection – output – medium temperature / extra code. The only electrical connection is the M12 plug (036). Temperature code 500 is -40 to +115 °C and 487 is -40 to +200 °C, the latter used with the sliding connection. Extra codes are 061 (UL), 374 (3.1 material certificate, not with connections 360 or 631), 634 (TAG) and 881 (drinking-water approval). The datasheet example is 408401/000-036-387-470-500/061. Fitting it to the application

A capacitive switch reacts to the dielectric difference between air and medium, so conductive liquids, oils and many powders can be handled, and the wet test or teach function lets the installer set the switch point with the real medium. The sliding connection (G 1/2, 100 or 250 mm) allows adjustment of the switching height. For hot-region plants typical placements are overfill protection on fuel and chemical day tanks, pump dry-run protection on water skids, and low-level alarms on hygienic dairy and beverage lines. When requesting a quotation, state the medium, its dielectric behaviour, the temperature and pressure range, and the process connection. Choose the output code: push-pull, NPN, PNP or IO-Link with a digital output. Special extensions cover shipbuilding, hygienic installation, WHG overfill protection and Ex i, and the sliding process connection allows media up to 200 °C. The switching point can be set with hysteresis or window functions and a delay from 0.3 to 60 s, so describe foaming or splashing tanks. The supply is 9.6 to 36 V DC for standard outputs and 9.6 to 30 V for the Ex i version.

The probe is a capacitive level switch for tanks and vessels. IO-Link parameterisation allows the switching point and delays to be set for the actual medium, which helps when buildup or foam forms on the sensor tip during operation.

JUMO is the German maker of temperature sensors, process controllers, pressure transmitters and liquid analysis instruments. Moritz Kurt Juchheim founded it in Fulda in 1948 as M. K. Juchheim KG, making glass thermometers with six employees. The name JUMO comes from the founder's name. It is still a family company headquartered in Fulda, and the parent company has been called JUMO GmbH & Co. KG since 2003.

Choosing a temperature sensor starts with the range and accuracy. A Pt100 RTD is accurate and stable from about -200 to 600 °C and is the usual choice in process plants. A thermocouple (type K or J, for example) covers much higher temperatures and responds faster but is less accurate. The wiring also matters: a 3-wire or 4-wire Pt100 connection cancels the resistance of the cable, while a 2-wire connection adds an error that grows with cable length. That is why a head-mounted transmitter is often fitted close to the sensor.
