Veeder-Root Mag Plus In-Tank Probe for Light and Heavy Oil
Description
Inventory probe for fuel oil, lubricants and alternative fluids
The Veeder-Root Mag Plus in-tank probe for light and heavy oil is the Mag Plus variant for heavier or non-fuel liquids in underground and aboveground tanks. It is offered with water detection (0846397-3xx) or without it (0846397-6xx), and in both cases it is for inventory only, with no leak detection.
The datasheet lists fuel oil #4, motor oil, 90W gear oil, transmission fluid, toluene and high-density biodiesel (specific gravity above 0.865) as approved products, to be used with the light-oil float kit. Float kits for alternative fluids without a water float, light oil and heavy oil are available in 2 in and 4 in sizes.

Applications beyond fuel
Light and heavy oil products are common in power plants, workshops and depots, where the need is to know the stock level rather than to test for leaks. Because leak detection is not part of this probe, it fits tanks where inventory and a water alarm are enough. Biodiesel tank testing approval is stated in the datasheet for B6 to B20 meeting ASTM D7467 and B100 meeting ASTM D6751, and motor oil is noted as compatible with tank testing.
Choose the float kit by fluid: the light oil kit for the listed light products, the heavy-oil kit for heavier oils, and the alternative-fluids kit when no water float is wanted. Use the 6xx part number with no water detection when water would never settle in the product or is not of interest.
What to confirm before ordering
- Product and density, to choose the light oil, heavy oil or alternative-fluids float kit.
- Whether water detection is wanted (3xx) or not (6xx).
- Probe length, cable length and riser size (2 in or 4 in).
- Console and interface module from the compatibility table.
How the Veeder-Root MAGPLUS-OIL works
A float rides on the liquid and carries a magnet. The magnet sits near a stainless steel probe shaft with a row of sensors. The probe finds the float position and sends the level to the console. A second float on the water version shows the water level under the product. Temperature sensors along the shaft give an average temperature.
Where the MAGPLUS-OIL is used
- Fuel oil tanks
- Motor oil and gear oil tanks
- Transmission fluid tanks
- Power plant day tanks
- Workshop and depot tanks
Selection checklist for the MAGPLUS-OIL
- Water detection or not
- Probe length from 48 to 144 inch
- Cable length of 5 or 10 ft
- Float kit for the liquid
- Float size of 2 or 4 inch
- Riser cap and ring kit
- Console in use
- Specific gravity of the liquid
Installation, commissioning and maintenance notes for the MAGPLUS-OIL
Fit the correct float kit for the liquid. Lower the probe through the riser and fix it with the cap and ring kit. Connect the cable to the console and set the tank in the console. Check the product and water readings against a dip. Clean the floats when residue builds up.
