Inline ultrasonic flow for plastic and metal pipework

The JUMO flowTRANS US W01 (type 406050) is an inline ultrasonic flowmeter for conductive and non-conductive liquids. It sits in plastic or metal pipework through standard fittings and mounting sets, with a PPSU or PP measuring tube and a PEEK transducer, so there are no moving parts to wear and nothing metallic in contact with aggressive water.

JUMO lists reverse osmosis, seawater desalination, wash water recovery, galvanic and surface-treatment wastewater, and cooling towers as typical uses. The device is available in DN 15, DN 20, DN 25, DN 32 and DN 50, with a separate low-flow calibration for DN 15.

Selecting size and fittings

Size the meter from the flow range of the line rather than from the pipe size alone; the ranges above show that a DN 25 meter measures up to 160 l/min with the standard range, while a DN 15 low-flow version covers 0 to 30 l/min for dosing and RO permeate lines. Process connections are made with mounting sets: the data sheet lists PVC-U metric and ASTM sets with PP nuts, PP socket and butt-welding sets and stainless steel sets, each with its own part number (for example 00750871 for PVC-U metric DN 15 and 00750888 for PP socket welding DN 15).

Provide the inlet and outlet runs required in the data sheet and install in a horizontal measuring tube for the stated accuracy; the 1 to 4 bar water condition applies to the reference accuracy values.

Operating limits to respect

The measuring medium may carry up to 5 percent solids by volume and up to 1 percent gas by volume. Accuracy is guaranteed within -20 to +70 C for DN 15 to DN 32, while 80 to 95 C is outside the accuracy range, and DN 50 is limited to 60 C. Drinking-water approved materials are available in some versions as printed in the sheet.

Delivery includes a calibration certificate, the operating manual and two O-rings for the process connection.

Choosing a temperature sensor starts with the range and accuracy. A Pt100 RTD is accurate and stable from about -200 to 600 °C and is the usual choice in process plants. A thermocouple (type K or J, for example) covers much higher temperatures and responds faster but is less accurate. The wiring also matters: a 3-wire or 4-wire Pt100 connection cancels the resistance of the cable, while a 2-wire connection adds an error that grows with cable length. That is why a head-mounted transmitter is often fitted close to the sensor.
