Endress+Hauser Prowirl 72F Vortex Flowmeter

Description

Overview

The Endress+Hauser Prowirl 72F is a robust and safe vortex flowmeter designed for the universal measurement of gases, steam, and liquids, suitable for safety-instrumented applications up to SIL 2. Its patented capacitive DSC sensor delivers high-precision measured values even under the toughest process conditions, including high temperature steam service and pulsating flow.

With fast quotation turnaround and technical support, Seven Star LLC proudly supplies the Endress+Hauser Prowirl 72F to power plants, process industries, and utilities across the Sultanate of Oman and the wider GCC, backed by genuine factory calibration, full documentation, and local technical support.

Measurement Principle

The Endress+Hauser Prowirl 72F operates on the vortex shedding principle. A bluff body positioned in the flow path generates alternating vortices as fluid passes, at a frequency directly proportional to flow velocity; the patented capacitive DSC sensor detects these vortices and converts the signal into an accurate volumetric flow measurement independent of fluid density or pressure changes at a given velocity.

Because vortex shedding is a well-understood, repeatable physical phenomenon, the Prowirl 72F delivers consistent accuracy across gases, steam, and liquids from a single sensor design. The instrument has no moving parts to wear in the measuring path itself, and its high-temperature rating makes it a proven choice for steam metering where mechanical meters degrade quickly.

Engineering Design of the Endress+Hauser Prowirl 72F

The sensor is available in nominal diameters from DN 15 to DN 300 (1/2 inch to 12 inch), rated for process pressures from PN 10 to PN 250 (Class 150 to 1500, JIS 10K to 40K) and medium temperatures from –200°C to +400°C, with up to +450°C available on request for specialized high-temperature steam applications.

The transmitter features a two-line liquid crystal display with push-button operation and quick setup capability, housed to IP67 (NEMA 4X) protection. The compact version operates in ambient temperatures from –40°C to +70°C, while the remote sensor version extends to +85°C, giving flexibility for installation near hot process lines.

Prowirl 72F Accuracy by Fluid, Sensor Versions and Outputs

Endress+Hauser specifies the Prowirl 72 separately for liquids and for gas or steam. In liquids the maximum measured error is below 0.75 % of reading at Reynolds numbers above 20000; for gas and steam it is below 1 % of reading under the same condition and at velocities below 75 m/s. Between Reynolds 4000 and 20000 the same percentages apply to the full scale value instead of the reading. Repeatability is ±0.25 % of reading, and the full scale velocity for liquids is 9 m/s.

The fluid temperature range depends on the DSC sensor and seal selected. The standard capacitive DSC sensor covers -40 to +260 °C; the high/low temperature sensor extends this to -200 to +400 °C. High pressure versions use an Inconel 718 sensor (PN 63 to 160, Class 600) or a titanium Grade 5 sensor (PN 250, Class 900 to 1500), the latter from -50 °C. Graphite seals cover the full range, while Viton is limited to -15 to +175 °C and Kalrez to -20 to +275 °C.

The transmitter is loop powered: 12 to 36 V DC in non-Ex service, 12 to 30 V as Ex i and 15 to 36 V as Ex d, with 18 V or 21 V minimum when HART communication is used. In addition to 4-20 mA HART, a passive pulse/status output can deliver scaled pulses, limit values, the raw vortex frequency (0.5 to 2850 Hz) or a PFM signal for an RMC621 or RMS621 flow computer. PROFIBUS PA and FOUNDATION Fieldbus versions draw 16 mA.

Prowirl 72F Product Status, Successors and Inlet Run Requirements

The Prowirl 72F belongs to the earlier Proline generation. On endress.com the manufacturer states that the product is no longer available and directs users to the new generation: Proline Prowirl F 200, Prowirl O 200 for high pressure and Prowirl R 200 with line size reduction. For plants running installed 72F meters, the functional safety statement in the Technical Information remains relevant: Prowirl 72 is rated SIL 2 to IEC 61508 / IEC 61511-1.

Vortex meters need a fully developed flow profile. The minimum inlet runs given by Endress+Hauser are 15 × DN after a reduction, 17 × DN plus 8 times the step height after an expansion, 20 × DN after a 90 degree elbow or T-piece, 25 × DN after two elbows in one plane, 40 × DN after two elbows in different planes and 50 × DN after a control valve, each with 5 × DN downstream. A perforated plate flow conditioner is offered where these lengths cannot be provided.

Why Choose Seven Star LLC for Endress+Hauser Vortex Flowmeters

A vortex meter rated for SIL 2 safety-instrumented duty has to be specified with the correct pressure class and temperature rating for genuinely demanding steam or high-pressure gas service, and a mismatch on a safety loop is a far more serious problem than on a simple indication point. Seven Star LLC works with your process safety and instrumentation engineers to confirm the Prowirl 72F’s pressure, temperature, and SIL configuration against your actual safety-instrumented system requirements, backed by our trusted Endress+Hauser suppliership across Oman and the wider GCC. We also support power generation and petrochemical facilities in Sohar and Salalah with coordinated documentation for safety-loop commissioning and with planning compact-versus-remote transmitter mounting around hot steam lines.
