Brand:

Selectarc B84 E8018-C2 3.5% Ni Cryogenic Steel Electrode

Description

3.5% nickel weld metal for cryogenic and LPG service

The Selectarc B84 is a low-hydrogen basic electrode with more than 3% nickel in the deposit. It is designed for fine-grain steels operating between -60 and -80 °C, and the data sheet also states impact energy at -100 °C. Its classification is AWS A5.5 E8018-C2 and ISO 2560-A / EN 499 E 46 6 3Ni B 4 2 H5.

Selectarc names cryogenic and petrochemical industries as the main users, in particular the storage and distribution of liquefied gases and volatile products. Typical equipment includes refrigerated tanks, low-temperature process piping, flare and blowdown lines that can cool sharply during depressurisation, and associated pressure vessels.

Parent materials

B84 is matched to plate and tube in 3.5% nickel steel. Listed grades are 3.5 Ni 285 and 355 (12N14) to NF A 36-208, 10Ni14, 14Ni6 and 16Ni14 to DIN, and ASTM A203 Gr D and E plate, A352 LC3 castings, A334 Gr 3 tube and A350 LF3 forgings.

These steels are the usual material for ethylene and propane service and for equipment whose minimum design temperature lies below the reach of 1% or 2.5% nickel grades. Using a 3.5% Ni electrode on them keeps strength and Charpy performance of the joint consistent with the base metal. For 5% or 9% nickel steels, where toughness down to -196 °C is needed, nickel-base fillers such as ENiCrMo-3 types are normally chosen instead.

Heat treatment and welding practice

If the electrodes have taken up moisture, redry them for 2 hours at 350 °C. Any preheat depends on the parent metal thickness, and Selectarc recommends a stress relieving treatment at 620 °C for one hour in most cases. Confirm that the PWHT cycle agrees with the base metal specification and the governing code before production.

Toughness at -100 °C is sensitive to weld metal microstructure. Narrow stringer beads, moderate current and tight interpass control favour the fine-grained structure that gives good Charpy values, while oversized weave beads coarsen it. Keep opened electrodes in a heated container, remove slag carefully between runs, and plan impact tests of weld and HAZ at the design temperature as part of procedure qualification. Nickel steels can be sensitive to arc blow from residual magnetism, so demagnetising the joint or adjusting the earth position may be necessary.

About brand

Selectarc is a French manufacturer of welding and brazing filler metals, headquartered in Grandvillars, France. Its welding activity began in 1952 with Selectarc Industrie, a plant making covered electrodes, and the business is the welding and brazing division of the family group Viellard Migeon & Compagnie. In 2025 Framatome took a 40% stake in the company.

Selectarc welding and brazing products

The welding range covers covered electrodes for carbon, low-alloy, stainless and nickel-base steels, MIG and TIG wires, flux-cored wires and hardfacing products, with brazing alloys made at the former Reboud-Roche foundry. Selectarc lists the nuclear, defence and aerospace industries among its key markets, and welding production is concentrated at its Grandvillars site, which also houses the research laboratory.

Ordering Selectarc filler metals: what we need

Give the product name, for example Selectarc Ni625, and the AWS or ISO classification in your procedure, the diameter and length, and the quantity. Seven Star LLC, an independent supplier in Muscat, checks the grade against the Selectarc technical data sheet and can provide the data sheet and the certificates issued with the order on request.
