Rosemount 5408 Non-Contacting Radar Level Transmitter
Overview
The Rosemount 5408 is Emerson’s two-wire non-contacting radar level transmitter for continuous level measurement of liquids, slurries and solids. The official product data sheet describes unique energy-efficient FMCW radar technology engineered for reliability and ease of use, with an intuitive commissioning experience driven by wizards and adaptive graphics. A companion version, the Rosemount 5408:SIS, is certified to IEC 61508 for SIL 2 and is aimed at safety functions such as overfill prevention. Both are NAMUR type tested and self-powered for up to two seconds, so the measurement continues through cable glitches or lightning.
As a trusted supplier of Rosemount products in Oman and the GCC, Seven Star LLC supplies the Rosemount 5408 Non-Contacting Radar Level Transmitter with the Rosemount 5408 datasheet and regional engineering support. Operators in Muscat, Sohar and Salalah can select the antenna, process connection and output in one order and receive a transmitter configured for the tank.
Radar Measurement Principle
The Rosemount 5408 transmits a swept 24.05 to 27 GHz signal from the antenna toward the product surface and compares the frequency of the returning echo with the signal being sent. The difference is proportional to distance, so the transmitter calculates level from the time of flight without any contact with the process. Because the antenna sits at the top of the vessel, there is no moving part and a lower risk of leakage, and the measurement is unaffected by density, viscosity, temperature, pressure or pH. Smart Echo Supervision technology tracks every echo, including those from agitators and nozzles, and separates them from the true surface echo.
The data sheet quotes ultra accuracy of ±0.04 in. (±1 mm) and standard accuracy of ±0.08 in. (±2 mm), with repeatability of ±0.04 in. (±1 mm) and an ambient temperature effect of ±0.04 in. (±1 mm) per 10 K. The sensor updates once per second on HART and twice per second on FOUNDATION Fieldbus. The default maximum level rate is 40 mm/s and can be raised to 200 mm/s, which suits fast-filling vessels and small tanks. Maximum range is 130 ft (40 m) for the standard class, 492 ft (150 m) with option ER, and 50 ft (15 m) for ultra accuracy.
Engineering Design of the Rosemount 5408
The antenna selection defines the pressure and temperature window. A cone antenna with a PTFE seal is rated from –15 to 363 psig (–1 to 25 bar) at –76 to 392 °F (–60 to 200 °C), with other PTFE versions reaching 1450 psig (100 bar) or 482 °F (250 °C). PEEK-sealed cone antennas with FKM or Kalrez seals handle up to 754 psig (52 bar) and 428 °F (220 °C). A process seal antenna with a Tri Clamp or flange connection serves hygienic and corrosive duty, and a parabolic antenna with swivel mount and integrated air purge covers long-range solids at up to 43 psig. Extended cone antennas of 23.6 in. (600 mm) and 47.2 in. (1200 mm) are available.
The Rosemount 5408 housing is aluminum or stainless steel with ½-14 NPT, M20 × 1.5 or G½ conduit threads, and the wetted materials include 316/316L stainless steel, alloy C-276 and alloy 400. Hazardous area certifications include ATEX flameproof, intrinsic safety, Type n and FISCO, along with US and international approvals. The Smart Diagnostics Suite alerts operators to antenna build-up, weak signal conditions and abnormal surface behavior, and a local log keeps seven days of level readings, alerts and echo profiles. Smart Meter Verification can run on a schedule to prove the transmitter performance without interrupting the process.
Key Features
The Rosemount 5408 combines radar performance with easy commissioning. The points below are taken from the official data sheet.

- Offers ultra accuracy of ±1 mm and standard accuracy of ±2 mm, with a measuring range up to 150 m on the standard class.
- Provides 4–20 mA HART (revision 7 by default, revision 6 selectable), FOUNDATION Fieldbus and Rosemount 2410 Tank Hub connectivity.
- Powers from 12 to 42.4 Vdc on HART loops and from 9 to 32 Vdc on Fieldbus, with a built-in 6 kV lightning protection level.
- Supports cone, process seal and parabolic antennas for liquids, slurries and solids, including foaming, condensing and sticky products.
- Includes wizards, adaptive graphics, an optional LCD display and a QR code asset tag that opens serialized documentation.
- Delivers the Smart Diagnostics Suite, NAMUR NE 107 field diagnostics and seven days of local echo curve storage.
- Is available as the 5408:SIS, certified for SIL 2 with SIL 3 capability, with remote Smart Proof Test.
Industrial Applications
The Rosemount 5408 is used on storage and buffer tanks holding oil, gas condensate, water and chemicals, on reactors with agitation, foam, condensation, high temperature and pressure, on blenders and mixers, on open sumps, ponds and dams, and in still pipes. For bulk solids the same device serves small to medium silos with rapid level changes, because its narrow beam avoids internal obstructions. The 5408:SIS suits safety instrumented functions such as overfill prevention and dry-run protection. In Oman typical duties include refinery and petrochemical tanks, chemical dosing vessels, desalination and water storage, and grain, cement and mineral silos near Sohar and Salalah.
In Oman and the GCC, Seven Star LLC supplies the Rosemount 5408 to operators, EPC contractors and maintenance teams across Oman and the wider GCC. For other level technologies, compare the Rosemount 5300 level transmitter, which uses guided wave radar for contact measurement, and the Rosemount 3051SAL liquid level transmitter for hydrostatic measurement.

Send the complete model string and the serial number from the nameplate; a photo is ideal. Every character of the string selects something: range, output, materials of the isolating diaphragm and flange, process connection, housing, approval and options. If you are specifying a new point, give the measured variable and span, process fluid, pressure and temperature, connection, output (4-20 mA HART, FOUNDATION Fieldbus or wireless), display and hazardous area approval. For remote seals add flange size, rating and capillary length.Browse Rosemount products by category: Pressure Instrumentation, Temperature Instrumentation, Level Transmitter, Liquid Analysis Sensors, Flowmeters.
