Schneider Electric P3U30 PowerLogic (Easergy) P3 Universal Protection Relay

Description

Overview

The Schneider Electric P3U30 is a universal protection and control relay from the PowerLogic P3 range, the platform previously sold as Easergy P3. It protects feeders and motors in distribution networks of utilities, industry and power plants at voltage levels below 132 kV. Compared with the P3U20, the P3U30 adds four voltage transformer inputs, which unlocks directional overcurrent, under- and overvoltage, frequency, rate-of-change-of-frequency, directional power, voltage-dependent overcurrent, fault location and synchrocheck functions. Schneider Electric confirms that the renaming from Easergy to PowerLogic changed only the brand, not the commercial references or the performance of the relay.

Seven Star LLC supplies the Schneider Electric P3U30 to utilities, switchgear panel builders, EPC contractors and industrial plants in Oman and the GCC, with engineering support in Muscat. The relay is a common choice for 11 kV and 33 kV feeder panels, ring main unit retrofits and medium-voltage motor starters where a compact, cost-effective relay must still offer IEC 61850 and a full set of voltage-based functions.

Protection Principle

The Schneider Electric P3U30 continuously samples three phase currents, a residual current and up to four voltages, calculates RMS values, symmetrical components, harmonics and power, and compares them with the settings of each protection stage. When a stage picks up and its time delay expires, the output matrix operates the trip relay of the circuit breaker. On the Schneider Electric P3U30 the feeder application provides three phase overcurrent stages (50/51), five earth fault stages (50N/51N), four directional phase overcurrent stages (67), three directional earth fault stages (67N), transient intermittent earth fault detection (67NI), breaker failure (50BF), thermal overload (49) and up to five auto-reclose shots (79).

The voltage inputs of the Schneider Electric P3U30 add three undervoltage (27) and three overvoltage (59) stages, neutral voltage displacement (59N), negative sequence overvoltage, two over/under frequency stages (81), rate of change of frequency (81R), vector shift (78V) for loss-of-mains detection, two directional power stages (32) and two synchrocheck stages (25). In the motor application the relay provides start-up supervision and locked rotor (48/51LR), negative sequence (46), frequent start inhibition (66) and incorrect phase sequence (47) protection. Inrush and fifth harmonic detection, cold load pickup, programmable curves and four setting groups make coordination with upstream and downstream devices straightforward.

Engineering Design of the Schneider Electric P3U30

The Schneider Electric P3U30 is a flush-mounted relay of about 171 × 176 mm front size and 2.5 kg, with IP54 protection at the front panel and IP20 at the rear. Its printed circuit boards are conformal coated for demanding industrial conditions, and pluggable connectors simplify wiring and replacement. The front panel has an LCD with a single-line mimic, measurements and alarms, programmable function keys and LEDs, circuit breaker open and close push-buttons, and a USB Type B port for the Easergy Pro setting and configuration software.

Phase current inputs of the Schneider Electric P3U30 are rated 5 A and configurable for CT secondaries of 1 to 10 A, and the residual current input is available for 5 A, 1 A or 0.2 A CTs. Voltage inputs are rated 100 V and configurable from 50 to 250 V. The standard auxiliary supply covers 48 to 230 V AC/DC, with 24 V DC and 24–48 V DC options. In the common configuration the relay accepts 16 digital inputs and provides 8 outputs plus a self-supervision contact (other order codes offer 14 inputs and 11 outputs), while rear ports for Ethernet and RS-485 carry the substation communication.

Industrial Applications

In Oman, the Schneider Electric P3U30 is applied to 11 kV and 33 kV distribution feeders, primary substation outgoing feeders, ring main unit and secondary switchgear upgrades, and incomers where directional protection is needed to discriminate between parallel supplies. Oil and gas facilities use it on medium-voltage switchboards feeding pumps, compressors and process substations, while desalination and independent water and power plants apply it to auxiliary switchboards and medium-voltage motors. Its synchrocheck and loss-of-mains functions suit solar plants and embedded generation connected to the distribution network.

Industrial users in the Sohar, Duqm and Salalah zones, including metals, cement, petrochemical and logistics operators, specify the Schneider Electric P3U30 for transformer feeders and large motor starters, often integrated into an IEC 61850 substation automation system or a SCADA over Modbus TCP or DNP3. Seven Star LLC supplies the relay with the required CT and VT ratings, auxiliary voltage, I/O and communication options, and provides the Schneider Electric documentation for engineering and commissioning.

For larger switchboards, compare it with the Schneider Electric PowerLogic P5 feeder protection relay.
