The Mean Well ELG-200-24A is a 200 W LED driver that combines a constant voltage output with a wide constant current region. It delivers 24 V DC at up to 8.4 A, and the A-type version used here lets the installer adjust both the output voltage and the output current through built-in potentiometers. It is intended for LED strips, modules and luminaires in signage, architectural, street, tunnel and industrial lighting where the fitting is exposed to dust and water.

The die-cast aluminium case is rated IP65 or IP67 depending on the type, the input accepts 100 to 305 Vac, and the driver is specified for a case temperature of -40 to +90 C. The datasheet lists a typical efficiency of 92% for the 24 V model and a power factor of 0.95 or better at 230 Vac.

Reading the ELG-200-24A part number

The ELG-200 family is ordered by output voltage and by a type suffix. In ELG-200-24A, 200 is the power class, 24 is the nominal 24 V output and the suffix A means that the output voltage and current can be adjusted with potentiometers. According to the datasheet, a blank suffix is the fixed output, B adds 3-in-1 dimming, AB combines adjustment and dimming, and DA adds a DALI interface. The ELG-200 range has six voltages: 12, 24, 36, 42, 48 and 54 V.

Because the driver has a constant current region, it can drive a string of LED modules whose total forward voltage falls between 12 and 24 V at a current set up to 8.4 A, or act as a conventional 24 V constant voltage supply for LED strips. The datasheet gives driving method diagrams and the rated power drops to 150 W when the supply is below 180 Vac, so check the real mains voltage of the installation.

Installation and approvals

The driver has fly leads for input and output, and the datasheet states that the installer must read the user manual for water proof installation cautions before use. The listed approvals include UL 8750 (type HL), CSA C22.2 No. 250.13-12, IEC/EN 61347-1 and 61347-2-13, EN 62384, EAC TP TC 004 and GB/T 19510, with the IP65 or IP67 rating given in the same list. EMC emission is to EN 55015 and EN 61000-3-2 Class C at 50% load or more, and immunity includes 6 kV line to earth surge. Mean Well treats its power supplies and drivers as components to be installed in final equipment, so the EMC and safety results quoted in the datasheet must be re-confirmed in the finished installation. For A and AB types, the datasheet also notes that built-in use must be considered to comply with Type HL applications.
