The Hydac AC-M 1 2.5 12V HB S (HYDAC part number 7705363) is the smallest size of the AC-M mobile air cooler range. It combines an aluminum bar-and-plate heat exchanger with an axial fan driven by a 12 V DC motor, mounted in a plastic shroud that HYDAC designed with CFD modelling for better airflow and corrosion protection. The HB in the code means herringbone air fins, which HYDAC recommends for very dusty applications because they resist clogging.

The Product News names mobile cranes, concrete pumps, drilling rigs, roadworking, construction, agricultural and municipal machines among the uses, and electronics cooling as well.

Reading the code

AC-M 1 2.5 12V HB S: AC-M is the mobile air cooler, 1 the size (sizes 1 to 6 exist), 2.5 the modification number of the heat exchanger with ORB-16 and ORB-08 ports, 12V the 12 volt DC fan motor (24 V is the alternative), HB the herringbone fin design (PC is the panel cut option) and S suction airflow. Bypass options IBP and IBT, a temperature switch, a foot mount and an electronic speed controller can be added to the code; none is part of this part number.

Choosing herringbone or panel cut fins

The Product News offers two fin types: panel cut for higher cooling capacity in low-dust applications, and herringbone for dusty ones. The same size 1 cooler in panel cut draws 4.8 A from the 12 V supply, while the herringbone version draws 7.6 A according to the technical data table, so size the wiring and fuse for the version you order. Avoid running the fan at full speed when the oil inlet is more than 50 °C above ambient, since quick temperature changes can shorten the life of the cooling element.

The operation and maintenance manual covers installation and wiring in more detail, and HYDAC lists electronic speed controllers as accessories for 12 V and 24 V units. The Product News also advises keeping a clear distance of half the heat exchanger height on the air side, because anything below that can affect cooling capacity and noise.

Most hydraulic failures start with dirty or wet oil. That is why a system has filters at several points: a pressure filter in front of sensitive valves, a return filter that cleans what comes back to the tank, and a breather that stops dust and humidity entering as the oil level moves. The filter element's rating (for example 3, 10 or 25 µm) and its material decide what cleanliness class the oil reaches. On HYDAC sensors, the type code also sets the pressure range, the output and the connector. For example, HDA 4445-A-400-000 is a 4-20 mA transmitter for 0-400 bar.
