Horiba LAQUA PH1100 Benchtop pH/ORP/Temperature Meter

Description

PH1100 is the basic model of HORIBA’s LAQUA 1000 benchtop pH series: a black-and-white static-LCD meter for pH, ORP and temperature with up to five-point calibration, 0.01 pH accuracy, 500-record memory, RS-232 output and an integrated electrode stand.

A no-nonsense bench pH meter for routine laboratory checks

Where the F-72 offers a touch screen and ion measurement, the PH1100 keeps to the essentials. A custom static LCD shows pH, temperature, calibration points and an electrode status icon; the keys are capacitance switches. The manual points out that these keys cannot be operated through thick gloves, so use bare hands or thin rubber gloves.

Calibration is automatic with up to five points from USA or NIST buffer sets, and the display shows offset and slope, with separate acid and alkaline slopes depending on the calibration points used. Readings can be switched between 0.1 and 0.01 pH resolution, held automatically when stable (auto-hold or auto-stable) and temperature-corrected by ATC from an electrode sensor or by MTC from a typed value.

PH1100 compared with the rest of the 1000 series

The manual covers three meters. The PH1100 has 0.1 and 0.01 pH resolution, USA and NIST buffers and a 500-record memory. According to the manual, the PH1200 and PH1300 add 0.001 pH resolution and custom buffers, hold up to 999 records, and the PH1300 adds ion measurement. If your tolerance is 0.01 pH and you only need pH and ORP, the PH1100 is sufficient; for ion work or finer resolution look at the PH1300, F-72 or the 2000 series.

Choose PH1100-S for USA buffers or PH1100-SN for NIST buffers. The kit electrode is refillable, so plan for the 3.33 M KCl solution that comes with the kit.

Setup, calibration and maintenance

Set the instrument on the bench, fit the electrode in the built-in stand and connect the BNC and temperature plugs. Settings are grouped in the SET menu: P1 for pH (resolution, buffer set, calibration data and alarm), P3 for temperature compensation (ATC or MTC) and P4 for general items such as auto-hold type, auto power-off, date, printing and password. Calibration needs the electrode immersed at least 3 cm in the standard; stirring helps for ion work.

Error No. 0008 appears when the calibration interval has expired and error No. 0010 when more than 500 records are stored; copy the data to a PC and delete it from memory. For care, wipe the case with a dry soft cloth or a cloth with alcohol, keep it from direct sunlight and corrosive gas, and store electrodes with the cap and a little pure water. Clean oily electrodes with alcohol or diluted neutral cleaner, and inorganic deposits with 1 mol/L HCl, as the manual lists.

Where this entry-level bench meter fits

Water-treatment laboratories, school and university teaching labs, food and beverage QC and plant laboratories need dependable pH readings, without touch-screen functions they will not use. The RS-232 output allows printed records for the file when an audit asks for them.

Selection and installation notes

Laboratory and field water analysis instruments are selected from the parameter, the range and the accuracy needed. Calibrate with fresh buffers or standards that bracket the expected readings, rinse the sensor between samples, keep the sensor wet and clean as the maker advises, record the temperature with every reading and replace sensors at the interval the manual states. Keep the calibration record with the results.
