Horiba LAQUA PH220 Handheld pH/ORP/Temperature Meter

Description

PH220 is the data-logging model of the LAQUA 200 series of IP67 handheld meters: it measures pH, ORP (mV) and temperature with a BNC electrode, stores 1000 results with date and time, and carries a built-in electrode holder and foldable stand for routine field and plant-side water testing.

A rugged pH meter that keeps GLP-style records

The PH220 and its sibling PH210 share the same housing and keypad. What the PH220 adds, per the manual, is the real-time clock with date and time stamps, a 1000-record memory (the PH210 holds 500) and a PC connection through a phono-to-USB cable, so a result can be traced to the minute it was taken. A printer can be attached through an RS232 cable for printouts that show the model, serial number, calibration points, offset, average slope and electrode status.

Measurement is not limited to pH. The same meter reads ORP in absolute millivolts or as a relative value that you shift by up to ±200 mV by calibration, and it displays temperature in °C or °F with automatic compensation from a probe or manual entry. The sensitivity icon grades the electrode: above 95 % excellent, 85 to 95 % very good, 80 to 85 % good.

Features listed for the LAQUA 200 handheld series

PH220 or PH210, and which kit

If you only need live readings and a short memory, the PH210 will do. Choose the PH220 when results must be exported, time-stamped or documented for a customer or an audit. The meter is sold bare or as the PH220-K or PH220-KN kit; the difference is the buffer set, so pick the NIST kit when your procedures call for pH 6.86 and 9.18.

The kit electrode is a gel-filled, plastic-body 9652-10D with a temperature sensor; for other samples the manual points to the HORIBA electrode catalogue.

Setting up, calibrating and caring for the system

Fit two AA cells, connect the electrode to the BNC socket and the temperature plug to the T socket, and the meter will show ATC when a temperature sensor is detected (MTC otherwise). Calibrate with pH 7 first, then pH 4 for acidic or pH 10 for alkaline samples; use all three when the sample is unknown. The manual advises immersing the electrode at least 3 cm and clearing old calibration data before a new calibration.

Typical messages are BATT LOW, OFFS ERR (dirty electrode or clogged junction), SLPE ERR (low sensitivity, clean and recalibrate), BUFF ERR (standard not recognised) and MEM FULL. Clean electrodes according to the dirt type listed in the manual and store them with the protective cap holding a little pure water. The manual notes the electrode filling solution is concentrated KCl (3.33 mol/L), so avoid skin and eye contact.

Field pH and ORP in water, wastewater and process work

Typical GCC uses are potable and desalinated water checks, cooling and boiler water, wastewater and effluent screening, swimming pools and food or beverage plants. The IP67 housing and the foldable stand let the meter sit on a tank rim or a bench while the electrode works in the sample.

Compatible items

Calibration cables for PC (3200779639) and printer (3200779638) are listed above. The same 200 series family includes the DO220 dissolved-oxygen meter and the TB220 turbidity meter.
