Hach TU5300sc and TU5400sc Online Laser Turbidimeters

Description

Overview

The Hach TU5300sc and its higher-precision sibling, the TU5400sc, are online laser turbidimeters from the Hach TU5 Series, built for low-level turbidity in treated and finished water. Both use the patented 360° x 90° Detection optical design, which Hach says sees more of the sample than other turbidimeters and therefore gives better low-level precision and sensitivity with less test-to-test variability. Because the TU5200 benchtop instrument uses the same optics, laboratory and process readings can be compared directly instead of arguing over which one to trust.

Seven Star LLC supplies the Hach TU5300sc and the TU5400sc to drinking water producers, desalination plants, power stations and beverage plants in the Sultanate of Oman and the GCC. Our Muscat team helps you choose between the two models, between the EPA and ISO versions, and between the basic sensor and the configuration with flow sensor, automatic cleaning, RFID and System Check.

Measurement Principle of the Hach TU5300sc

The Hach TU5300sc directs a laser into the sample so that light scatters off suspended particles. Light scattered at 90° to the incident beam is reflected by a conical mirror in a 360° ring around the sample before it reaches the detector. The amount of scattered light is proportional to turbidity: clean water scatters little light and gives a low reading, while turbid water scatters strongly and gives a high one.

Hach optimised these optics for accuracy at low turbidity, so the TU5 Series deliberately omits ratio technology, which the manufacturer notes is only useful for high-turbidity samples affected by colour and large particles. The EPA version uses a 650 nm Class 2 laser and meets EPA-approved Hach Method 10258, while the ISO version uses an 850 nm Class 1 laser in line with ISO 7027-1:2016, so either can support regulatory reporting.

Engineering Design of the TU5300sc and TU5400sc

The Hach TU5300sc online instrument measures 249 x 268 x 190 mm and weighs 2.7 kg, or 5.0 kg with all accessories. Hach states that the design has 98% less online sample surface area to clean, and the small sample volume means a change in water quality is seen almost immediately. Calibration and verification use sealed Stablcal vials, with RFID versions identifying the standard automatically, and an optional glass rod secondary standard below 0.1 NTU supports routine checks.

On the Hach TU5300sc the electronics compartment is rated IP55 and all other functional units IP65 when the process head or automatic cleaning module is fitted. Sample temperature can be 2 to 60 °C, sample pressure up to 6 bar, and flow 100 to 1000 mL/min with an optimum of 200 to 500 mL/min. An SC controller is required to operate the turbidimeter, so the sensor is normally paired with a Hach SC4500 or another SC platform controller in the same panel.

Key Features of the Hach TU5300sc

The Hach datasheet lists the following capabilities for the Hach TU5300sc and TU5400sc.

  • 360° x 90° Detection optics that collect scattered light from a full ring around the sample for low-level sensitivity.
  • Resolution of 0.0001 NTU/FNU/TE/F/FTU/EBC and stray light below 10 mNTU.
  • Accuracy of ±2% or 0.01 NTU from 0 to 40 NTU, and ±10% of reading from 40 to 1000 NTU against a Formazin primary standard.
  • Repeatability better than 1% of reading or ±0.002 NTU on the TU5300sc, tightened to ±0.0006 NTU on the TU5400sc.

  • Response time T90 below 45 seconds (TU5300sc) or below 30 seconds (TU5400sc) at 100 mL/min.
  • Prognosys diagnostics that warn of maintenance needs before a reading becomes questionable.
  • Optional flow sensor, automatic cleaning module, RFID and System Check on the fully equipped order codes.

Industrial Applications

Hach names drinking water, power, beverage and pharmaceutical duty for the TU5 Series. In Oman the Hach TU5300sc fits naturally on filter outlets and combined filtered water at surface and groundwater treatment plants, and on post-treatment and product water at seawater reverse osmosis plants such as those along the Batinah coast and in Sur and Salalah. Where the duty is membrane integrity monitoring or individual filter performance, the TU5400sc, with its faster response and tighter repeatability, is usually the better fit.

Power stations and industrial steam users can apply the Hach TU5300sc to condensate and make-up water, and bottling plants use it on product water. Seven Star LLC supplies the Hach TU5300sc and TU5400sc with engineering support in Muscat, together with Stablcal standards, maintenance kits and the controller needed to run them.

About brand
Water quality testing is the single subject Hach has worked on since 1947, from the reagent pillow in a field kit to online analyzers in a treatment plant. The company is based in Loveland, Colorado. Seven Star LLC lists Hach online analyzers, controllers, sensors, portable meters and reagents, and sources them for water, wastewater, power and process plants in Oman.

Hach analyzers, sensors and reagents listed

The Hach products on this page fall into four groups:
  • Online analyzers: CL17sc colorimetric chlorine analyzer, TU5300sc and TU5400sc laser turbidimeters, BioTector B3500ul TOC analyzer, Polymetron 9245 sodium analyzer and Orbisphere 510 dissolved gas analyzer
  • Controllers and digital sensors: SC4500 controller and the LDO 2 luminescent dissolved oxygen sensor
  • Portable and laboratory instruments: 2100Q turbidimeter, HQ4200 multi-parameter meter and IntelliCAL probes such as the LBOD101
  • Reagents: DPD free chlorine powder pillows and DEHA reagents for oxygen scavenger testing
Polymetron and Orbisphere analyzers are aimed at power plant water-steam cycles and similar pure water duties, where sodium, dissolved oxygen and other gases are measured at low levels.

Where Hach instruments are used

Hach instruments appear in drinking water plants, desalination, sewage treatment, cooling and boiler water circuits, and industrial effluent monitoring across the GCC. Operators use the portable meters and reagents for spot checks, and the sc analyzers and probes for continuous signals to the control system.

Ordering Hach products: what we need

Hach identifies every item by a catalog number, for example LXV416.99.20001 for a sensor or 21055-69 for a reagent pack, and the same reagent may be written with or without the dash. Send that number and the quantity. For analyzers and controllers, add the parameter and range, sample conditions, power supply, outputs and communication option. For sensors, tell us the controller model they will connect to and the cable length. For reagents, name the instrument and method so pack size and range can be confirmed against Hach documentation.
