Danfoss 180B3010 APP 10.2 Seawater High-Pressure Pump

Description

Danfoss 180B3010 APP 10.2 high-flow seawater RO pump

The Danfoss 180B3010 is the APP 10.2, the largest pump in the APP (W) 5.1–10.2 group. With 100.5 cm³ per revolution it delivers about 5.8 m³/h at 1000 rpm and 8.75 m³/h at 1500 rpm at its full 83 bar rating, which makes it a mid-capacity feed pump for seawater and brackish-water reverse osmosis where a single pump has to carry a whole train. The housing is duplex stainless steel, the seals are NBR and the pump is lubricated by the water it moves. Seven Star LLC supplies the 180B3010 in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier in Muscat.

Compared with the smaller sizes in the same group, the 180B3010 asks more of its surroundings: a 30 kW class motor, 141 Nm of torque at full pressure and a footprint of 0.43 m² with an IEC motor. It is therefore usually specified when the skid is designed around this pump rather than dropped into an existing frame.

180B3010 code and version options

Code or element Meaning

Sizing the motor and the drive for the APP 10.2

The torque of a positive-displacement pump follows pressure and displacement, not speed. For the 180B3010 the full-pressure torque is 141 Nm. A motor that is large enough in kilowatts at nominal speed can still be too small at the low end of a variable-speed range, because its torque capability falls with frequency in constant-power operation. The datasheet gives typical motor sizes at maximum pressure, and the manufacturer notes that motors on frequency converters can be noisier if the drive switching settings are poorly chosen.

Flow control on this pump is normally done by speed, since throttling a positive-displacement pump only raises pressure. A drive with minimum speed limited to 700 rpm and a pressure limit that trips before 83 bar protects both pump and membranes. Slip rises with pressure: theoretical flow at 1500 rpm is about 151 l/min, while the datasheet value at maximum pressure is 8.75 m³/h, around 146 l/min.

Position of 180B3010 in the 5.1 to 10.2 group

The 180B3010 gives 100.5 cm³, nearly twice the displacement of the APP 5.1 (180B3005, 50.2 cm³). The intermediate sizes are the 180B3006 (63.3 cm³), 180B3007 (70.3 cm³) and 180B3008 (80.4 cm³). Above this group the APP 11 to 13 sizes and the APP 16 to 22 sizes use different housings and connections. Because the inlet window, speed range and pressure class are shared across the five sizes, moving from 8.2 to 10.2 mostly changes flow, motor and torque.

Selection and ordering checklist

  • Feed flow required at the operating temperature, compared against 5.83 m³/h at 1000 rpm and 8.75 m³/h at 1500 rpm.
  • Whether one 180B3010 should carry the train or two smaller pumps should run in parallel for redundancy.
  • Operating pressure at the end of membrane life, kept at or below 83 bar g.
  • Boosted inlet supply at 2 to 5 bar g if running above 1500 rpm.
  • Version: standard 180B3010, ATEX 180B3110 or W 180B3080.
  • Motor, bell housing, coupling and baseplate, plus the need for a drive and a motor with enough torque at low speed.

Installation and service notes for the APP 10.2

Allow for the 30 kg pump mass and a larger motor weight on the frame, and isolate the unit with dampers. Fit flexible hoses, a low-pressure relief valve on the inlet side, an inlet pressure monitoring switch ahead of the pump, and a non-return valve in the outlet. A precision depth filter of 10 µm absolute, beta 5000, protects the narrow internal clearances; bag or string-wound filters are not recommended by the manufacturer. There is no integrated flushing valve on this group, so plan an external flush connection.

Service intervals of 8000 hours are expected under manufacturer conditions, with yearly inspections recommended and a dedicated tool kit available. After a shutdown longer than one day rotate the pump on permeate for about 10 seconds to rinse the internals.

Applications in Oman and the GCC for the 180B3010

This size suits municipal and hotel seawater RO trains, industrial brackish-water treatment at power and petrochemical sites, containerised plants for oilfield camps and offshore water makers. In summer the Gulf and Arabian Sea water can exceed 35 °C at the intake, which should be checked against the 50 °C media limit when intake or pre-heating lines pass through sun-exposed pipework. Dust and salt-laden air argue for covered motors and regular rinsing.

About brand

Danfoss is the Danish engineering group that makes refrigeration and air-conditioning controls, heating components, variable speed drives and mobile hydraulics. Mads Clausen founded it on 1 September 1933 at his parents' farm in Nordborg on the island of Als, after making his first refrigeration expansion valve in 1932. Nordborg is still the group's headquarters, and Danfoss remains controlled by the Clausen family through the Bitten & Mads Clausen Foundation.

Milestones

  • 1932–1933: First expansion valve; the company is founded in Nordborg.
  • 1939: 26 employees. By the 10th anniversary in 1943 the company has 179.
  • 1950s: Rapid growth turns Nordborg into a Danfoss town with housing and schools for its workforce.
  • 1968: Danfoss launches its VLT frequency converter, one of the first mass-produced AC drives.
  • 2014: Acquisition of the Finnish drives maker Vacon, now the VACON brand.
  • 2021: Acquisition of Eaton's hydraulics business.

Choosing Danfoss products

For solenoid valves, check the operating principle. A direct-operated valve such as EV210B opens even at 0 bar differential pressure. A servo-operated valve such as EV220B needs a minimum differential (typically about 0.3 bar) to open, while an assisted-lift valve such as EV250B works from 0 bar. Coils are ordered separately, so the voltage on the coil (for example 230 V AC or 24 V DC) must match the control circuit. For drives, the VLT family is split by application: FC 51 Micro Drive for small machines, FC 102 HVAC Drive for fans and pumps in buildings, FC 202 AQUA Drive for water, and FC 302 AutomationDrive for demanding industrial duty.

Where Danfoss products are used

In Oman and the GCC, Danfoss drives run pumps, fans and compressors in district cooling plants, water and wastewater stations, desalination and building HVAC. Danfoss pressure switches, transmitters and solenoid valves are built into chillers, refrigeration plants, boilers and hydraulic systems, and AB-QM valves balance chilled-water circuits in large buildings.
