Alfa Laval Cryogenic Centrifugal Pumps (Cryomec)

Description

Alfa Laval Cryogenic Centrifugal pumps from the Cryomec range

Alfa Laval Cryogenic Centrifugal pumps are the Cryomec centrifugal machines for moving liquefied gases at extremely low temperatures. They are built for liquefied natural gas (LNG), liquid oxygen (LOX), liquid nitrogen (LIN), liquid argon (LAR), liquid carbon dioxide (LCO2), liquid nitrous oxide (LN2O) and liquid hydrogen (LH2), and they are offered in vertical and horizontal configurations. Seven Star LLC supplies Alfa Laval Cryogenic Centrifugal pumps in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier in Muscat.

This is a range, not a single catalogue number, so the page explains the main pump types, what changes between them and the data needed to specify one. Typical uses are air separation, industrial gas liquefaction, carbon capture, marine fuel handling and truck loading and unloading.

Cryogenic Centrifugal pump types in the range

Type Key points
Process pumps with labyrinth seal Labyrinth seal with single or double gas injection, intended for high purity duties; bearing design stated for 40,000 hours

How Cryogenic Centrifugal pumps handle liquefied gas

A centrifugal pump imparts energy to the liquid through a spinning impeller. With cryogenic fluids the challenge is not the hydraulics but the thermal and sealing conditions: parts shrink on cooling, the liquid is close to its boiling point, and any heat input causes vapour that can starve the pump. The Cryomec design deals with this by cartridge construction, controlled cool-down and, in the single-stage version, a Supercharger that lets the pump run at very low NPSH.

The labyrinth seal system uses injected gas to stop process liquid or cold vapour reaching the motor chamber, which removes the risk of leaks into the motor. Slow-roll keeps the pump turning slowly while cold, and cold stand-by lets the unit remain at temperature without running, lowering operating cost on duty-standby sets.

Cryogenic Centrifugal in the system and related Alfa Laval pumps

A cryogenic pump is only part of the transfer system. It works with a vacuum-insulated or well-insulated suction line, a cryogenic tank, seal gas panels or GN2 purging systems, vent and relief arrangements, and instrumentation for temperature, pressure and vibration. A range of seal gas panels is available to meet different requirements.

For high-pressure, lower-flow duties the Alfa Laval Cryogenic Reciprocating pumps (DeltaN, KPS, THOR and LPRP) are the other half of the Cryomec offer. Centrifugal types suit larger flows and moderate pressures, while reciprocating types suit high pressure at lower flow.

Selection and ordering checklist for Cryogenic Centrifugal

  • Liquid: LNG, LOX, LIN, LAR, LCO2, LN2O or LH2, and its purity requirement.
  • Flow, discharge pressure and available NPSH at the pump inlet.
  • Vertical or horizontal arrangement and whether the pump sits inside or outside the tank.
  • Seal type: labyrinth with gas injection, mechanical, dry gas or sealless.
  • Duty pattern: continuous, intermittent, truck transfer, with or without cold stand-by.
  • Motor power, voltage and hazardous-area classification.
  • Seal gas or GN2 supply available on site.
  • Marine, trailer or fixed-installation use.

Installation, commissioning and maintenance of Cryogenic Centrifugal pumps

Cryogenic installations need a controlled cool-down: introduce the liquid gradually, vent vapour before starting and avoid dead legs that trap warm gas. Confirm seal gas pressure or GN2 purge before rotation, and check that insulation is complete so that heat in-leak does not flash the suction.

The cartridge design of multi-stage pumps simplifies maintenance, because the rotating assembly can be exchanged as a unit. Plan a spare cartridge or seal set for critical service, record cool-down cycles and monitor vibration and bearing temperature. The maker offers commissioning, maintenance and spare parts support, and digital tools for remote diagnostics.

Cryogenic Centrifugal in Oman and the GCC

The GCC has a strong LNG, industrial gas and petrochemical base, and demand for cryogenic pumps comes from air separation plants, gas filling stations for oxygen and nitrogen, LNG transfer and carbon capture projects. Hot ambient conditions raise heat in-leak, so insulation and tank pressure control deserve extra attention.

Industrial gas distribution by tanker is also common, and truck loading and unloading pumps with a mechanical or dry gas seal are the usual choice there. Our team can help match the pump type to the duty.

About brand

Alfa Laval is a Swedish engineering group built on three technologies: heat transfer, separation and fluid handling. Gustaf de Laval and Oscar Lamm founded the company in Stockholm in 1883 as AB Separator to make de Laval's continuous milk separator; the name Alfa-Laval was adopted in 1963. The company built its first heat exchanger in 1938, and today its plate heat exchangers, separators, pumps and valves are used in energy, marine, food, water and process industries. Group headquarters are in Lund, Sweden.

Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier listing Alfa Laval gasketed, fusion-bonded and welded plate heat exchangers and hygienic pumps for buyers in Oman and the GCC. Units and spare plates or gaskets are matched from the serial number on the frame nameplate.

Where Alfa Laval equipment is used

In Oman and the GCC, Alfa Laval plate heat exchangers are common in district cooling plants, HVAC systems, power stations, desalination, oil and gas processing, refineries and marine engine rooms. Gasketed units suit duties that need regular cleaning or later capacity changes, while welded and fusion-bonded units handle higher pressures, temperatures and media that gaskets cannot. Hygienic LKH pumps serve dairy, juice and beverage plants.

Ordering Alfa Laval equipment: what we need

For spare plates and gaskets, send the serial number and model from the frame nameplate. Alfa Laval keeps the build record, which defines the plate material, pattern and gasket type for each position. For a new heat exchanger add both fluids, flow rates, inlet and outlet temperatures, allowed pressure drop, design pressure and temperature, and connection standard. For an LKH pump send the model, size, impeller diameter, motor data and duty point.
